B and N were very prompt and thorough when doing the estimate for us. Bob was at our house on time, was very courteous and sent us an itemized, line by line, estimate for the things listed above. His estimate was very close to all the other estimates that we had gotten, with the biggest benefit to using them being that they could get the work done in 2 days or less, as opposed to working on our house over the course of a week or more. On the scheduled day, the guys showed up on time (7 am, on a Friday, no less). The workers were very courteous and very quick with their work. The work was completed in 8 hours. Now for the negative things that turned us off a bit. First, the estimate built in the costs to patch any drywall that had to be cut out to install the overhead fans and lights, and accompanying wiring work. Once the electrician started, he was able to fish all the wiring through the walls and ceiling without having to cut any holes in the drywall (other than the holes for the actual fan and light boxes). However, those lines of the estimate were not taken out of the final price. In other words, we were charged for patch work that never needed to happen (and didn't happen). Secondly, when installing the heat/ac register in the basement, the contractor removed a 8 inch piece of the bottom of the wood truss used in the floor joists. I am not sure if this was up to code or not, and now I wonder if the structural integrity of my house has been compromised by removing a part of a floor joist (at least a part of the bottom of the wooden trusses that were used). The contractors didn't ask if this was acceptable, they just did it. Even though I was told that the only cut that needed to be made to install the register was a hole cut out of the drywall for the register itself. Another, albeit smaller issue was that the contractor didn't bother to put the heat register near the center or the room. He used one 4 ft joint of duct, putting the register against on wall instead of the middle of the room. It just struck me as cheap not to extend the duct another 3 feet or so. Lastly, in the estimate, we were quoted a price for the installation of hard wired and synced smoke detectors. However, the electrician ended up putting the wireless battery operated synced smoke detectors in our house. The wireless ones were cheaper and did not require any electrical wiring/modification to existing wiring, but the final bill was not reduced accordingly. In the end the guys did prompt work, cleaned up after themselves and were done ahead of schedule. However, they ended up doing the work for a good deal less than estimated, but did not reduce the final bill accordingly. And they cut a few corners that should not have been cut. The work wasn't so bad that it was worth filing claims against them, but I don't think I would use them again, given the overall experience.
Description of Work: My wife and I had a few home improvements made to our house shortly after we moved in. The list of things that we needed to have done was: - exhaust fans installed in three bathrooms (this included running duct work from the fan to the outside of the house) - rewiring two bedrooms so that the light switch was wired to an overhead junction and not a wall outlet (as it was when we moved in) -install light/ceiling fan boxes in the two aforementioned bedrooms. - installing a heat/ac register and accompanying duct work in the finished part of the basement -installing hard wired smoke detectors on every floor of the house and having them synced together.
