Well it went ok or fair overall which is why I rated the visit as a C. The set up of the appointment was all done via email and was great which is why I have an 'A' for responsiveness. The electrician was a little late as the appointment was from 8 to 11 and he got there I think at 11:30 or so. I called at 11 and they said he was held up but was on his way (the electrician called shortly after and let me know he was on route which was great). The electrician arrived and began checking the outlets with a three pronged indicator. He checked almost all the outlets skipping some (with my approval) that already had working devices connected to them. The electrician though did figure out that some fuses switches needed to be flipped as well as the GFI indicator reset as I mentioned some outlets that were not working as well as a doorbell and a light post that were not working. The flipping and GFI indicator reset solved the issue with the kitchen outlets and the light post I was having an issue with (although it appeared that we had exceeded the 20amps which caused the fuse to flip for the kitchen and when I asked about upgrading so it didn't occur again he seemed to think it was better just to not plug as much stuff in which is not really a solution that works for us; that may very well be true though). I was also having an issue with the doorbell and he did help me quickly search for the transformer for the doorbell and gave me some advice on finding it after he left as well as some remote options if it was buried that CET could assist with via another visit. I don't believe he checked the smoke alarms but I didn't notice that was part of the safety inspection at the time. Not sure how they would check for electrical wire insulation and I'm not sure what a ARC fault breaker is or if it was checked. He did quickly check the fuse boxes. He mentioned since the house was built so recently ('91) that all the grounding should be fine. He did indicate the safety inspection is 'real quick' (which I found a little surprising for a $89 (which is discounted) but that may be the going rate). I probably should have just used another one of the other deals from CET to get a discount on a normal visit to have them look at some issues instead of the safety check which is really not for house as new mine. He was though helpful with some information on fan, door bell and light post wiring with an emphasis on the cost effective strategy of using remotes although I was more interested in understanding how it could be done without remotes. In sum, I thought it was going to be a little more thorough than checking the outlets with a power indicator (which I assume you could get at a hardware store and do yourself) and quickly looking at the fuse box but overall again it was a 'fair' experience.
Description of Work: Safety inspection: According to the Big Deal coupon: Certified Electrical Technologies will inspect smoke alarms, check all electrical panels, main breakers, circuit breakers, GFI's, ARC fault breakers, electrical wire insulation and grounding system to help prevent a fire in your home in order to keep your family safe.

Thanks for taking time to post your thoughts on the 10 Point Safety Check. We are sorry that you did not find it helpful even though our tech looked at 10 separate issues concerning the electrical system in your home. He also evaluated and corrected the other issues that you mentioned at no additional cost even though they were outside the scope of the AL promotion. As with all inspections, we also followed up with an email summary of the inspection. Because the house is relatively new we were happy to report that we did not find any safety issues. If you do not think that you received good value in the promotion, we encourage you to contact AL for a full refund

Our security lights in the front of the house keep burning out. We have replaced them all five times and they continue to burn out every 4-5 weeks. They are connected to a light timer switch and we did not have problems with the lights until the timer was installed. We have security lights around the sides of the house and the back which are on separate timers which do not have any problems. Spoke to a different electrician (who wasn't able to come out) who said that it sounds like a problem with the wiring and most likely we should change the timer. Called the office to schedule the appointment and gave exact specifics as to the problem and even said that we would like a master electrician to inspect and test the wiring. Instead, we got "Eric". On the plus side, he came exactly on time. Unfortunately, the person they sent did not seem to have any real working knowledge of electrical issues. His "inspection" was merely to change 4 of the 8 light bulbs. After about the fifth time I told him he needed to check the wiring and see if we needed to replace the timer (which we had bought) he said that he "wouldn't know how to do that". Of the one hour he spent at our house, approximately 30 minutes was spent changing 4 of the 8 light bulbs in the front of the house. Considering they get paid by the hour, the person they sent did everything at a snail's pace and only looked for excuses for anything that was suggested or asked of him to do. I finally told him not to touch the other burnt out bulbs since I didn't need to pay $200 an hour for something I could easily do myself. A handyman could have changed these bulbs for about 1/10 the cost and frankly, it is more important to us to have the electrical issue resolved than to have someone just change the bulbs. This was wasted money. We wanted a skilled electrician, and instead got someone inexperienced and inept. To make the matter worse, we called the office and told them of the experience and mentioned that we didn't even get the Angies List discount that was supposed to come to us (10% off per the AL website listing). The response was effectively, "we don't care".

This was a bit difficult to find since we did the work for a person other than the subscriber. Our work order indicated that the person who scheduled the service (again, not the subscriber) requested 3 things: correct a problem with the landscape lighting, correct a problem with the exterior lighting, and correct a problem with the Dining Room lighting. In 2 cases (exterior fixtures and DR fixture) the fixtures had burned-out light bulbs. The exterior fixtures were up 2 stories and required an extension ladder (which does take time moving around). The driveway lighting problem resulted from a bad GFI outlet that was replaced. Total time billed was 1.5 hours and our tech solved all 3 problems. He found nothing wrong with the wiring or the timer and made a recommendation to use LED lamps in the exterior fixtures for increased lamp longevity. The person who was at the home when we provided the service (not the person who scheduled the appointment) signed our invoice acknowledging that everything was completed and the charges were correct. Three weeks after the service, we received a Survey Post Card (our techs leave one with every client requesting a quick evaluation of the service) with a note to contact the person who scheduled the service via email. We contacted him immediately and he responded with a very negative email indicating that we "didn't do anything except change light bulbs". We responded letting him know what we did to resolve each of the problems that he originally described. Since it was obvious that he was not happy with the service, we offered to return to address anything that he wanted. He declined and continued to complain about poor service. Since we strive for 100% customer satisfaction and it was clear there was no way to provide this, we offered a 100% refund of the charges. Speaking of charges, no mention was ever made of the 10% AL coupon which was not presented at the time of service (as required by the coupon). After a week with no response, we contacted the customer again and reiterated our offer of a 100% refund. No response has ever been received. Although this appears to be a breakdown in communication between partners, we want our clients to be happy with the service that we provide and we will do anything we can to resolve an issue including offering a refund if no solution can be found.

Everything was fine; nothing great. They got their quickly. They did the consultation of what I wanted done and he told he couldn't do it, then he realized what he told me was incorrect and he could do what I wanted him to do. He told me he would have to set the light into the ceiling when he didn't have to and then he started then putting in another light, he tapped the wall and I asked him if he wanted the stud finder and he said "no" and then started cutting into the wall and then realized there was a pipe there, so then he had to move. So that irritated me. And the reason it ended up costing more was the light fixture I had had an issue with it, so I had to go and return it and bring it back. But it still went over because of that and two because of the consultation.

The service persons name was Phil and he was totally professional and very prompt. He went explained what he was doing and when he found an issue with one of the overhead lights, he told me that he could replace a component and it would help with the overall performance of the light fixture and he told me the price, which was fine with me. He cleaned up after himself and was very pleasant to talk to and deal with. I would hire this company again and will definetly recommend them to my friends.

Thanks for another great review and congratulations on your new Surge Arrestor. It protects everything electrical in your home from Lighting and Surge damage. It comes backed with a lifetime replacement warranty The average loss after lightning or surge damage is $8000 not to mention all of the time and effort required to deal with the loss. We have never had a client sustain damage after we installed one of these devices. It is quite simply the least expensive insurance a homeowner will every purchase.

Went to Angie's List and then their website. I had an appointment within 24 hours. The technician was very prompt. He called about an hour before arrival to verify address and that someone was home. Went right to work and addressed the issue right away. Vanity is now secure and is not coming down now. FYI, in order to book an appointment, you have to enter your credit card information to hold your spot. I like this, as this would cut down on no-shows or missed appointments by people not being there to get the job done. I'm not sure what the no-show charge is, but definitely makes you be there. I also got a ballpark estimate for a future project in which I need to have 2 new outlets placed. I was very please with technician Phil, and will definitely use them again in the future. They offer a 10% discount to Angie's List Members and/or Active Duty Military, of which I am both.

My initial contact with the company was at 12:17 a.m. (yes A.M). on 11/8 when I sent them an email about the electrical problem I was having which was a dead circuit in my kitchen where the circuit breaker seemed intact. I included my phone number. Later that morning they called me. I asked when they could schedule someone to come out. The dispatcher asked some good diagnostic questions, and I would not be surprised if those questions would actually help some folks solve their problems without a visit from a technician, so kudos to them for trying to do that! They said the first slot they had available was 5 days away (11/13). That day was not good for me so we settled on 11/14. They gave me an arrival time of between 8am and 12 noon. I was disappointed to have to wait almost a week for service, but at least I had another working circuit in my kitchen to tide me over. They required a credit card number to hold the appointment, which seemed odd to me (had never had that happen before) but I figured it was OK if they actually showed up on time. They also explained the pricing and it sounded like the minimum I would be paying was $135. Parts would be extra (possibly a GFCI outlet and/or a circuit breaker). I was asked the brand of the circuit breaker and of course I did not know so he told me where to look. I found it and emailed him some photos so they could be sure the technician would have the right parts (if needed) during his visit. He also asked me the color of the GFCI outlet (white or ivory?), again to insure the technician would have the right replacement part if needed. By 10:40 am on 11/14 no one had shown up yet and I hadn't heard from them, and since I was taking annual leave to be home while waiting for them, I called them to make sure they were coming. The dispatcher contacted the technician and then told me that the technician should be there by 11:30. However, the technician did not show up until 12:05 though he (the technician) did call me around 11:40 to say he couldn't locate my address with his map app. Seemed odd to me because my residential development is 8 years old and Google maps on the web has no problem locating it. I knew they had the correct spelling of my address. What I wondered later is whether he typed it into his app correctly. When the technician did arrive he got right to work and diagnosed and fixed the problem in what seemed like only 30 minutes. He was very likable and personable and seemed highly competent and I was impressed. The problem turned out to be a loose neutral wire in the outlet behind my refrigerator which apparently had not been installed correctly when my home was built 8 years ago. I paid with a check ($135), which was the base price that had been quoted over the phone on 11/8. There were no additional charges as no parts were required and the job was finished without needing extra time. I would use this company again but I would want to arrange it so that they would call me at work a half hour before a relatively accurate ETA. Seems they could have done a better job with this (i.e., that the technician should know in the morning what his schedule looks like, and that I could have been informed that I was the last one on the list for the 8-12 slot).

Thanks for the very detailed review. We appreciate your feedback and use this information to constantly improve our procedures. Most of our appointments have an arrival window since it is impossible to schedule an exact time (except for our 8AM scheduled appointment). Our techs call approximately 30 minutes prior to arrival. We welcome clients to call on the day of service to check on a better estimate of arrival time. Our dispatchers are in constant contact with the techs and can easily provide this information. Based on GPS records for this project, our tech arrived at 12:01 which was 1 minute outside the arrival window. His tardiness was due to not being able to find the subscribers street using the truck's GPS or his smartphone. He called the office for help and even Google (that knows almost everything) could not locate the street. The tech was told to call the client and ask for directions to her home. We later apologized for his tardiness because we know that our clients have busy schedules and we do not want to inconvenience them.

I ordered for 4 recessed lights to be installed on a finished dry wall. Was able to schedule fairly quickly with an arrival time between 8am-11am the following week. They said the job would take about 4-6 hours so they had to schedule a morning time. When the electrician came I greeted him outside and brought him in. Took off my shoes when entering however the electrician observed but did not offer to take his shoe off nor did he try to wear some sort of cover for his shoe. After explaining where i would like the job to be done he explains that he is going to make some holes maybe about 3 and that it would be up to me to get them closed up. I was a little confused because i thought that it would be a complete job. The electrician explained that he was an electrician and not a dry wall specialist and that he does not do dry wall repairs. Since i had already paid for the job through angies list it really was not an option to cancel the job. I needed to get back to work while the electrician was doing the work and he was to call me when he was done. I got a call in 2 1/2 hour later stating that the job was done and that he was cleaning up. When i got back home saw that he had made 5 hole instead of 3. He did mention that he was cleaning up but did not do a good job which was expected. The most disappointing about the job is that it is not complete and that i now am left with 5 holes in my dry wall. Now i will have to find someone to finish the dry wall and paint. I wish that the description of the job was clearer. I later found out that another Ryans electric would have done the job for 40 dollars more with dry wall repair. Should have done more research before purchasing. In terms of the electrical work i have no complaints. In terms of the description of the job wish that they would clarify that no dry wall repair would be done then i would not have even purchased the deal. Feel like i went and took my car for a brake job and when i went to pick it up the wheels were not put back on and the mechanics would explain that he was only being paid to change the brakes and it would be up to me to put the wheels back on.

Thank you for taking time to post your review. Without feedback, we cannot improve our service and we value the input from our clients. When we run these Big Deals with AL, we are very careful to include what is and is not included in the promotion to try to eliminate as many misunderstandings as possible. The issue with cutting holes is addressed in the promotion. It says " Minor Drywall repair will likely be necessary and is not included in this deal." We also realize that many people do not take time to read the promotions carefully, so we go over issues like this at least twice before the first hole is cut. When scheduling the project, our coordinator let the client know that it will be necessary to cut holes and we do not patch or paint the holes. Additionally when the tech arrives to perform the work he tells the client again. After 35+ years in business we know that eliminating surprises is in everyone's best interest. So like every installation project we perform, this subscriber was informed that holes would be necessary and not repaired 3 times before the project began. The project could have been cancelled at any point, but the subscriber chose to proceed. The auto repair analogy is cute, but not relevant. What is relevant are the comments about not wearing shoe covers and not cleaning up properly. All of our techs have shoe covers and are advised to wear them and have both drop cloths and vacuums to clean up properly after every project. We apologize for these oversights and will discuss the issues with the tech. Thank you again for the valuable feedback and we look forward to your next project !

The experience was very good, starting with the initial call. Steve answered my calls and was very knowledgable about the work I needed and provided estimates on the time needed to perform the work. The technician arrived on time and completed the work. The actual cost was less than the estimates. The technician identified work that was not required. The price was fair and the service was excellent.
Description of Work: They reviewed and repaired electrical issues identified in an inspection report.

I used an Angie's List deal for a Whole House Electrical Safety Inspection. The technician, Eric, was very punctual, and very thorough when inspecting my house. Since my Dad is retired, I had him meet the technician to do the walk-through. My Dad followed Eric around the house and asked questions about issues I was concerned about. Eric pointed out some minor issues, and one somewhat major issue. He also said I would receive a follow-up email with a report, and a rough cost estimate for the repairs. A couple days after the inspection, I did get an email from a different guy, however it was very non-descriptive, and did not include any costs. The nondescript list even included one issue that my Dad said wasn't even brought up when they walked through the home ("open ground in 2 outlets"). I felt as though I just got a generic email that I wasn't able to do much with, so I emailed back and asked for more specific information on where the issues were (what room of the house, which circuit...?) and I got no response. So I emailed again and said that his email was too vague and I needed an actual report. At that point I got a phone call and we went through the issues one by one, so I took my own notes. It just would have been nice if I had received an actual report with the rough cost estimate, as indicated by the technician. I told him this, and he said I could have my money refunded if that's what I wanted, but I declined. There was definitely a disconnect between what happens at the inspection and the email follow-up. I just left the whole experience feeling like they just don't care a whole lot, and getting my money refunded isn't going to solve the issue.

$89

Response from Certified Electrical Technologies
After one of our techs performs a 10 Point Safety Check (only $89 for AL subscribers) he goes over any issues with the client and provides an estimate of the repairs. Our tech found a couple of minor issues and brought them to the attention of the subscriber's Father. The repairs were easily resolved and inexpensive to correct. The Father declined the repairs. We always follow up with an email which we did explaining the issues that were found. The subscriber requested a detailed report of our findings so instead, we called to explain in detail what we found and the recommended repairs. After going over the minor issues with the subscriber on the phone, we once again offered to make the repairs. She declined. Sensing that she felt that she did not get good value from the inspection, we offered a full refund. She declined that as well. We will do everything we can to achieve 100% customer satisfaction. If we cannot achieve that goal, we will offer a refund since we want each client to feel like they received good value when we provide service.

They never came out. They were requiring me to get something else done and I told them exactly what the coupon said. It does not say in the fine print that I need to get any other work done. The individual on the phone was unprofessional with his tone. I am not using this company.

$25

Response from Certified Electrical Technologies
This is an AL promotion on their website to replace a dimmer. From the AL website: Certified Electrical Technologies, a highly rated Super Service Award Winner on Angie’s List, is offering to replace a switch with a dimmer for $25 with any other regularly priced paid service The coupon has to be used with a regularly priced service. It cannot be used "stand-alone". When an AL subscriber purchases any promotional coupon we are notified by email. When we received the email for this coupon we asked what other projects the subscriber needed to have done in addition to the dimmer and also reiterated that the coupon could not be used stand-alone. The subscriber responded that he had no other projects and we suggested that he request a full refund from AL. We understand that not everyone reads the promotions so we make sure they know exactly what they purchased prior to making an appointment. Most people who make an error appreciate our pointing out the issue and suggesting a refund. It's pretty rare that we get a poor review due to a subscriber's error in purchasing the wrong coupon
