The contractor was very nice and personable and came recommended from a neighbor whose house he had gutted and renovated. . Contractor saw no problem with the quality of his work and seemed to feel that because he had driven me to various tile stores (unsolicited) that I should not have found problems with his work.
Problem
Radiator not supported by floor. Height of floor had changed once tiling was completed . in order to reconnect radiator to
pipes, radiator was elevated off floor approx. .5 inch, with no additional support other than it?s connection to the pipes. Radiator weighs approx. 75-100 pounds. I questioned the contractor as to whether it was safe to have the I was advised by an HVAC specialist that the radiator would eventually damage the pipes as the pipes were not intended to support it?s weight.
Contractor Response-
Placing shims under the radiator legs would not look good. Even though the pipes are old they would be able to support the radiator.
Problem
Job took over two months from beginning to end.
ContractorResponse
A couple of weeks into the project I was out of town for 4 days. Contractor worked on another job during that time with my permission. The contractor said he was ill for at least 3-4 days, other absences were unexplained resulting in my having to contact the contractor and ask when he would be returning.
Problem
Floor is not level in multiple places: 1. around the toilet, 2. Down the middle of the floor in front of the bathtub.
Contractor Response -
That the floor is indeed level. That the tile around the toilet had to slope due to ?..( am unable to remember the reason given).
NOTE: I have taken glass marbles and dropped them on the floor and they either roll to the left and hit the wall or to the right and hit the tub.
Problem
Extensive scratches on the tile have marred the surface of the tile and the scratches cannot be removed or made better according to the tile store manager. The tile itself is black and has a glass mirror finish. Areas of select tiles have been so damaged that there is just a cloudy surface remaining which cannot be polished out. Of the 49 pieces of tile on the floor 24 or 49% of those pieces are damaged beyond correction. The scratches are not just surface you can feel the depth of the scratches within the tile when your finger runs over the surface. The manager of the tile store came to my house, examined the floor and assessed that the contractor created the scratches. The entire floor would need to be replaced. The manager stated that working on the floor with wearing rubber sole shoes with grit and pieces of debris embedded in the soles (as well as not covering the floor to protect the surface) on the floor would create the type of scratches evident. The contractor did not cover the floor and continued to replace tiles from the walls(which were misaligned) creating additional debris on the floor stating that ?any scratches would be able to be buffed out.?
Contractor Response
?The scratches can be buffed out of the tile?, ?these type of scratches occur due to the tile surface? and that ?the glaze on the tile was too thin? (store manager disagreed stating that the glaze depth was standard.) and a final statement was that ?If the floor was redone those same type of scratches would occur again.? Contractor made no attempt to improve the tile surface nor refund any money.
Problem
The tiles in the corner of the bath surround closest to the shower head do not align. So the pattern of the tile is off. No effort was made to correct it.
Contractor Response
No response was given as the contractor left the walls in this condition on the day in which he said he was ?finished?.
Problem
The bathroom was not fully painted and the remaining walls that were to be painted were left with fingerprints, dust and dirt marks.
Contractor Response - No response was given as the contractor left the walls in this condition on the day in which he said he was ?finished?.
