I also called Kustom Floors and spoke with Rudy. Ruby mentioned he had a game on Sunday in my area. He would be happy to stop by my condo afterwards. Rudy arrived on time, was professional and customer-service oriented. He first looked at my floors and noticed they were crooked. Next he took out a string and demonstrated how the floors were not straight and the patterns were not staggered in some areas. Rudy said if I selected him to contract the job, he would correct all of these flaws. Rudy spent about 45 minutes in my condo, asked me questions and actively listened to my concerns. Rudy went the extra mile by meeting me at my place of employment to drop off wood samples. I immediately knew he was the one for the job. Rudy takes pride in his work. I trusted him.
My story gets more interesting. Rudy ordered the flooring. It was delivered early so that the wood could get use to the temperature. The following week Rudy and his crew arrived on time and ready to work. Unfortunately once they started pulling up the floors in the back bedrooms, mold was discovered. All work had to stop and the mold remediation company was called. To make a long story short, it took 4 ½ months before Rudy, his crew and I could re-enter. During that time, Rudy called me periodically to get updated. Once they were allowed to return to my condo and lay the hardwood floors, Rudy and his crew finished the job in a matter of days. They even worked on a Saturday. My floors are beautiful.
We are good at telling contractor horror stories. This is a great story from beginning to end. I would highly recommend Kustom Floors. You will get nothing but the best from Rudy and his crew!
I set up an appointment for an estimate and Rudy arrived and provided a thorough estimate for everything we needed to get the job done.. Within a very short time Rudy and his crew were ready to start the job. They arrived on time everyday and got right to work. Very organized, polite and professional. They did an excellent job. The new railings, balusters and newel posts are beautiful.
And the stairs look fantastic too. Beautiful job matching the stain on the stairs to our existing hardwood floors!! It was truly a pleasure working with Rudy and his crew. I would highly recommend them. In fact I plan on having them do more work for me in the future!!!
Rudy correctly identified our existing floors as red oak common #1, and recommended the same wood for the new installation, unlike other contractors who recommended select. That's important because the inconsistencies in the common #1 give it a unique look, and select would not have tied in to the existing floor at all. The crew took out some existing wood flooring that didn't match, and brilliantly toothed-in the new to the existing. You cannot tell at all now what is new and what is existing - it is all completely uniform and beautiful.
Rudy's crew installed new stair treads and risers with some custom carpentry work alongside the stairs for new trim and molding. They also patched some drywall to cover up where I had demolished the old staircase walls, and repainted to match without messing up the ceiling - which we did not want to have to repaint since we didn't have any paint to match. It all looks superb and came out exactly as we described our requirements to Rudy.
Rudy's crew is able to do interior painting, so we had all of our interior doors and trim painted during the same job, which minimized headache for us and kept cost down since they didn't have to be so careful about protecting the floor that was about to be refinished and the carpet that was being removed. They did a great job on the painting and made sure the white exactly matched other white surfaces in the house.
The crew arrived on the day we agreed and finished on the day that was estimated at the start. Each night the crew tidied as best they could. They arrived around 8am every day and were often still at the house when I came home after 5:30pm. They did a decent job of cleaning up the house after the work was complete, and although there was still dust on some surfaces, it was less than I expected and they had obviously done quite a lot of wiping down and vacuuming at the end of the job. They even repaired some previously-damaged baseboard molding that wasn't in the scope and we weren't expecting them to take care of - a nice touch that shows they really care that the whole package looks great at the end of the job.
We did a pretty thorough job of getting quotes, and while Rudy's was slightly higher, he spent a great deal of time going over options and explaining the process. This level of attention and detail won us over and was certainly worth paying for in the end.
One thing about Rudy is he wants to work with your budget. He suggested we buy our wood so that we didn't have to pay his markup, which we did. To save us money he also suggested ways for us to redo our banister and even where to get the supplies. It was a very consultative experience from start to finish. In fact, in the middle of the work, they noticed our three stairs after our foyer were not built properly and offered to rebuild them so they were safe and looked good. That ended up being $500, but since they were so uneven after removing the carpet, it was definitely a must. And then our fridge didn't fit back in over the wood, so they shaved down our cabinet for free. Little stuff like that is bound to happen, so having a team like Kustom is worth it because you can trust them to do it right.
Each team member was friendly, they were on time, and did excellent work. They were all very flexible with scheduling too!
The floors are so gorgeous it's a shame we have to put furniture on them. We are excited to enjoy them for years to come.
Bottom line: HIRE THESE GUYS, you won't regret it!
Rudy and Kustom Flooring were very responsive and did a fantastic job. They deserve an A++++++++ rating. The floor stain brought out the highlights of the wood.
The work was done so nicely and he did work around other contractors working in another part the house. The flooring crew was knowledgeable and proud of the work they performed.
I know I will hire Rudy and Kustom Flooring again.
The project. Many of the reviewers here have used Kustom Floors to refinish old or existing floors. We used Rudy's company to install new hardwood maple floors throughout the main level of our house -- the kitchen, dining room and living room -- and solid maple tread and riser planks that Rudy's company stained and finished for the stairs leading to the upper level of the house.
The cost. We live in a modest Gaithersburg townhouse. Of the 5 companies we received cost estimates from, Kustom Floors was competitive and reasonable. So if you're concerned that what you have been reading sounds great but might be too expensive, give Rudy a call and get an estimate anyway. You might be surprised. That being said, it's helpful to keep in mind that hardwood floors are expensive to begin with, and you need a quality company that you can trust to install them correctly and get the details right. It doesn't make any sense to buy expensive hardwood floors and then scour the internet looking for the cheapest installer in town. You get what you pay for. And by the way, even though we're sure Rudy works with customers who have budgets much larger than ours, we never felt like we received less than the very best his company has to offer. The value and the customer service are outstanding.
The craftsmanship. Don't think of Rudy and his company as installers. It would probably be more appropriate to consider them craftsmen. Because that's really what they are. There are probably dozens of installers in the area who can install a basic hardwood floor. But no project is perfect, and every house has quirks and eccentricities that complicate the job -- and the attention to detail in addressing the subtleties, complications, and unforeseen issues is what makes the difference between an installer and a craftsman. Rudy and his brother Jimmy and the rest of the Kustom Floors team have the knowledge, the experience and the confidence to address the details of a project in a way that makes the finished installation look like the work of craftsmen. We were incredibly impressed by their creativity and ingenuity; the hardwood flooring in our home looks like a work of art, and we are leaving area carpets off the floors so that we can fully enjoy the artistry of their work.
The integrity. Just when you might be tempted to think that there aren't any companies still around that operate with integrity, you will be reassured in discovering Kustom Floors. Rudy conducts his business operations with old-fashioned professional integrity. The job isn't finished until it's done right and the customer is satisfied. You can trust Rudy and his brother Jimmy to do the right thing. And it's hard to put a price tag on that. We were very pleased with every aspect of our hardwood floor project, and give the strongest recommendation possible to Rudy Arredondo and Kustom Floors, LLC.
Jimmy and his crew came each day on time and ready to work, and they couldn't have been more professional and courteous. The men took extreme care to seal off the open areas above and around the great room, which was no easy task because we have such a wide open floor plan. They also took the extra care to put painter's tape around the doors to adjoining rooms as well, so that minimal dust got into the rooms. That was amazing because we lived between our first floor master bedroom (right next to the great room) and our lower level during the three days of work, and we expected the dust to be overwhelming, but at no point did that ever happen. At the end of each day, we poked our heads into the great room to check out the progress, and we always smiled at what we saw. Everything happened on time and exactly as they had described, AND the house was left positively spotless at the end of each work day. Not only that, but the men were "staging" in our garage, which was also swept clean and equipment was neatly put aside so that the garage was usable every night. We were so impressed!!
I want to give a special mention to Jimmy, who sanded six different areas to show me different stain colors. None of the stains quite met what I wanted, but I picked one and then called him an hour later to ask if it was possible to mix a little of one into the other. He was completely agreeable, saying he wanted me to be totally happy with the end result, so I came back to the house a little later in the day, and he stained three more areas with various combinations until we had the perfect one. He was always so patient, pleasant and kind, which was our experience with the entire group at Kustom Floors - from beginning to end!
As a last minute change, we decided that while we moved our furniture out, we really couldn't move it back in without sliding it across our brand new floors. Without missing a beat, Rudy arranged to have it moved back into place for us. They came with small pads to place on the legs of each and every piece of furniture (which will prevent scratching in the future as we move it to clean), and they still lifted every piece across the floor rather than sliding anything into place.
In a nutshell - The customer service was outstanding, our house was left impeccable each day, the dust was even more minimal than they assured us it would be, and we love, love, LOVE the floors! You cannot go wrong working with this company, and we will definitely use them again in the future. We have already given their names to two of our friends, and we will tell anyone who will listen what a fantastic experience this was for us!!
"Thanks! We are glad to have not only improved your floors but completed with paint work as well. It's much easier for the client to have us organize various projects implementation and timing. We really enjoyed your project and working with you. Enjoy!"
Angie?s list, we called K&K to request an estimate for refinishing the
hardwood floors in the rundown house ?with good bones? we had just purchased.
One of the brothers, Rudy, came out to give us an estimate. He saw that the house interior was also
in need of painting and volunteered that K&K does professional painting as
well. He showed us photos on his tablet of previous jobs, and they looked
great. We ended up hiring them to paint all of the downstairs rooms and to
refinish the wood floors throughout the entire house. We are glad we did!
Different crews handled the painting versus refinishing.
During the ~three weeks required for this job, we stopped by the house once or
twice most days at random times, unannounced, and they were always hard at
work. They were also very pleasant to interact with, offering great advice,
including suggestions for how some finish work could be improved, e.g. framing
the wood floors around the two fireplaces, and installing wood rather than
metal grates over the floor vents. They showed us options for installing a
custom oak mantle over the fireplace, to match the floors, and we added that to
the job as well. They mentioned that they really like working with designers,
and they clearly enjoyed passing on tips that they have picked up in the course
of previous projects.
While working on one wall, they found severe, ancient (not
active) termite damage. The wood studs were crumbling and could be broken apart
by hand. So ? the job grew significantly, as is typical with older houses. One crew
member ended up completely rebuilding an entire back wall of the house
(replacing the sill on the foundation, replacing some floor joists, replacing
all the studs, removing and reinstalling the sheathing and siding, and finally removing
and reinstalling a large window). Communication with us during this entire process
was exemplary, and was primarily through the two brothers and a senior employee.
The crew was mostly quiet workers who were quite pleasant and very focused on
doing their jobs. Crews handling different tasks were scheduled efficiently, with
the brothers acting as general contractors as well as working on specific tasks
(especially the more detailed woodworking) themselves.
We couldn't be happier with the final product and are amazed
at how much was accomplished in under three weeks. This was a big job. The work
was top-notch, characterized by an impressive amount of prep work and excellent
finish work. Their prices are reasonable. We were pleased
and sometimes a bit amused as we noticed how extremely detail-oriented this
team is. One example was when we noticed a small, ¾ in section of baseboard
between two doorframes and behind a door; we would not have worried about it,
but they actually installed a ¾ inch section of quarter-round molding along
that baseboard. They patched areas of our damaged wood floors, beautifully
matching the tone and darkness of the new and old oak boards. At the end of the
job, they thoroughly cleaned the work areas to remove all the sawdust they had
created. On the final day, a couple of them came through and did the final
detail work, touching up those little spots where things were not quite
perfect.
Would we hire them again? In a heartbeat! In fact, we have
asked them for an estimate to repair our fence and also to regrade and reinstall
a flagstone patio in the back yard, once our landscape architect has drawn up a
plan.
We highly recommend K&K flooring. Don?t let Rudy and
Jimmy?s youthful appearance worry you ? they are experienced pros and they clearly
have a well-run business. We look forward to working with them on future
projects.
"Team Kustom Floors Really enjoyed working with you. Thank you for the opportunity."
"Team Kustom Floors really enjoyed working with you. Thank you for the opportunity."
I am disappointed that they never did submit an estimate. Unfortunately, they preferred we have a mover come move our furniture and belongings out for basically two or three days (and it seems that we would have had to move out as well during that time) so they could make sure floor was level and do the engineered hardwood flooring. As we had several other estimates and those companies had included a charge to move furniture around to do the job, this was certainly a very last option. I have a feeling they may very well do quality work but we never did get an estimate back from them for the job and I even started considering whether I should do our main room first and not do the bedroom at the same time so it could be used as a swing space. I guess I really blew it when I walk the person to his car in back of our condo and he saw the roof desk and suggested we could move my stuff up there maybe and I said "are you kidding?" I wonder if I was to leave maybe my couch and loveseat and maybe table or bed up there on the roof desk for maybe two or three days?
An overall big disappointment. So far, this has been the only Angie's List recommendation that has had high marks that I have not been very pleased with. Guess the beat goes on and I'll look alittle more and particularly for someone from Angie's List that is willing (or able) to work on a condo in downtown DC and not expect the place be basically empty to put in hardwood flooring and who will provide an estimate or at least tell me they are not interested in my job rather than keep me waiting for an estimate to compare them. I don't doubt they can do a great job if you can meet their expectations to have basically an empty room or house for them to come in and get to work. With the person's comment about coming in and leveling the floor, I expect they really do try to do a good job but, I cannot help but think they were not really interested in my job after seeing it and did not bother to send me the estimate.I probably would not have choosen them as it would be such a hassle to box up and move everything out of my two main room (only would have a very small kitchen and bathroom left which cannot hold much.) Maybe they were doing us both a favor but it still feels bad.
Update 11/21/2013 -- I am glad the company responded to this review and can learn from my sad experience when they forgot to sent me an estimate back. (still have not got their estimate -- guess that is moot now) I do not doubt they can do good work and the floor might need leveling but it is rather hard to consider them when they forget to sent me their estimate and only become aware they didn't send it when they see my poor review of them. I stand by my comments that they are more suited to doing rooms that are already empty or can be emptied easily before they come -- they are probably not suited if you live downtown in DC in a highrise condo building in a small condo with 20 years worth of belongings and have to pack up all your things and move them out and then back in three days later unless you are doing quite well financially to pay your condo association twice to reserve a condo elevator (one for moving stuff out and again when you move it back in) plus paying someone to move your stuff out and hold it three days.. Yes, I had other bids and have selected another Angie's List member AG floors which are scheduled to install my engineered hardwood flooring on Dec. 1, 2013 and I will submit a review of that job when they have it done. (about two weeks from now).
At least my review of KK will let other's know that you definitely should expect to have everything moved out before they come to install/level and that they do not work around a small condo in downtown DC like mine with lots of stuff. Had I seen that in their many positive reviews, I would not have bothered to call them to come and give me an estimate as Ipersonally knew that moving all my stuff out was not a good option for me. Maybe other Angie's List members in my kind of situation will be better aware of this limitation. I expect they do very good work and am sorry I am not in a position with my constraints to be able to further consider them. As for the forgetting to sent me an estimate, well mistakes do happen and maybe it is a rare event with them but it did happen to me so the ball was dropped (possibly intentionally as their review seems to just write that off and they don't say they actually ever did sent one. They admit it should be just used as a learning experiene when you forget to sent the estimate out and they don't want other members to miss experiencing their good work due to forgetting to send out an estimate. They are probably right that I was not worth their time given my situation to do an estimate as they have never apologized to me for "forgetting to send the estimate". Saying your sorry maybe isn't something they learned from studying my situation and review. You mess up, you don't need to say sorry, you just need to "study the situation" to learn something from it. LOL, but I do at least appreciate you responded to my review whether you apologize or not to me. So I still give you an F for customer service because you don't even say your sorry when you admit you messed up and regret the situation and impact on my experience with you. Maybe they are so good they are not used to messing up and saying sorry. Well, good luck to their business anyway as they do a good job for some folks. My updated simply reflects as an Angie's List member that I still do not think you have treated me as well as you should have and that's what Angie's list is all about -- to let other members know who does a good job and those that you think did not so well. If you don't think you should say you are sorry or apologize for making a mistake -- that seems like you did me poorly and you don't apologize for it, and your business practice did not help in my case. Bottom line: Your business could not reasonably meet my needs and you then do not send out an estimate and your response to my review you don't even apologize for your mistake regardless that you otherwise do good work and craftmanship.
Update 01/21/2015: Just to help set the record more straight and add a maybe even a positive comment or two. I was contacted later by one of the owners and they did apologize that things had gone a bit wrong and it was during a bad personal time for them or they would have been probably on top of the situation.
I do believe this company does an superior job for hardwood floors if you have a home being built or vacant house/condo as they intend to be sure your floors are level (meaning nothing can be on them) and will make them level if not. In my case, I've been in my 10th floor Washington DC condo for 20+ years with lots of stuff in about 600 square feet of space. To have to move things out would have been a nightmare for me -- the other Angie's list hardwood floors recommendation I chose worked out much better (see my review) given they were able to do the job in a few days by moving my furniture and belongings around -- still stressful but nowhere near as bad as the thought of having to move everything out of my unit (to storage or LOL they suggestion the roof deck) and then having to go back and have everything moved back into my unit (ie would have involved two condo elevator moving fees, unit storage fees and probably two moving truck fees). I wish some of the reviews had mentioned something like this situation so
"We always strive for perfection in our work and our results, as you can tell by looking at our 115+ positive reviews to date. But it looks like we made a mistake here. It appears as though the customer's Estimate was never sent. We regret the situation and the impact on his experience with us. The vast majority of our clients are real advocates once they have us to their home, and true fans once the project is completed (often repeat customers!). We did list a break out of options for logistics in the estimate the customer did not receive. The second option was to do the project in two parts. Regardless of how the project was to be completed we would need to confirm the floor was level to ensure a lasting final product. We are pleased our high standard stuck with the customer in his review. This review was based on his recollection of a conversation with us on site, not a written document, and we were not the only company to provide an estimate. We appreciate hearing from the customer and will use this opportunity to evaluate our procedures. We do not want a mistake such as an unsent estimate to deter a homeowner from seeing the difference in working with us. Best, The Kustom Floors Team"
These guys are true craftsmen. They are meticulous. They obviously take great pride in their work. I could not recommend them any higher.
Also, they clearly understood what to do with OLD floors. That wasn't the case with everyone I spoke with.
They were a little more expensive than other options, but still very reasonable, and I'm glad I paid a little extra, given the excellent results.
