Or wood floors are about 50 years old and may have been refinished once in their life with lots of rough spots and dog urine stains. We had previously removed a wall and had the wood floors patched, but the new boards had not yet been finished. We called the previous company who had made the patches as well as Kustom Floors, for bids to refinish the entire upstairs (about 1,.000 sq. ft.). Rudy came out to bid the job and immediately noticed that the patched flooring did not match the existing flooring and said that they would be noticeably different after staining - he showed us some examples. He said that the fix was to replace all of the patches with the proper flooring. He also suggested that we go with flush-mount thresholds for our 2 transitions from tile to flooring. Although Rudy's bid was higher than my other bid from the original contractor, we decided to go with Kustom, in hopes of getting a quality job. Rudy came the first day of the job to do the thresholds himself. Being a woodworker myself, I have to say that Rudy did an outstanding job. The thresholds look awesome - completely flush with the tile with matched wood grain. Well worth the extra cost. He also replaced the end of marred top step with the same precision and outcome. Will headed up all of the other sanding and refinishing work with his crew of 2 workers. The all did an outstanding job and paid particular attention to the details. There was not a corner or edge of the that floor went untouched. I saw one of the workers spent 10-15 minutes getting into one tight area to make sure it was sanded properly. The must have replaced 20-30 boards that were damaged - now, you can't tell where any of the bad spots were. They took great care to do the job right. After sanding, adding a water treatment and selecting a darker stain, we were able to match the previous patches to the existing flooring, thus, did not have them replaced. There is a minor, but not noticeable difference in the finished product - still looks great. The first attempt on staining the pine steps turned out to be a little dark and splotchy, as pine will do. After discussions with Rudy, they sanded off the dark stain (took several hours) and put a lighter stain to better match oak floors. That worked great and we were happy with the results.
All in all, they did an outstanding job for us and we would highly recommend them if you want a quality job.Good work team and GREAT work Janice!
So what this all really means is that if you use KF, you do not really have to worry constantly about whether the job will turn out ok because it will turn out just fine. If it is not fine for some reason, KF will address it. Sometimes with some companies you have to hover and micro-manage because the crew is sloppy. You would not have to do that when working with KF. KF holds itself to a very high standard. Example: When the carpenter was working on the stairs, the impact from hammering resulted in nail pops on the ceiling of my basement staircase. They just decided they needed to fix it. I didn't notice, but I'm really glad somebody did. Another example: The crew borrowed our ladder in the garage. They made sure they padded all four feet before placing the ladder on the floor. This is a level of detail, trust and peace of mind that I must say I very rarely find nowadays with any service.
This is the second time in one year we have hired Kustom Floors to do work in our home. Based on the first great experience, we knew immediately that we would call Rudy at Kustom Floors when we decided to tear up the floors in our sunroom and replace it with hardwoods. This experience with them was equally as outstanding and pleasant as the last one, so much so that I felt I must post another review on their behalf - just as I did last year.
When I first called, Rudy remembered us very clearly and immediately arranged to come over and look at our next project. He listened carefully to our ideas, made excellent suggestions, and sent us a proposal to complete the work. We scheduled the project for just after the first of the year and the crew showed up as promised. Jimmy was the head of the crew ( we worked with him last year as well), and he is a true artisan when it comes to customizing cuts that need to be made, laying out floors in different directions, and matching the color of the floor from our previous refinishing to the new floor in an adjacent room. Not only that, but Jimmy was so incredibly patient as he laid out different patterns on the floor until I could pick what I liked.
The crew was very careful in sealing off the room, considerate with the mess as both my husband and I work from home, and diligent to clean up areas where the dust invariably managed to escape. They were punctual each day, had some unexpected issues along the way that they worked hard to manage without up-charging us, and worked well into the evening to be sure to stay on the timeline they promised. The job was completed on time and on budget, and the entire experience was as pleasant as the last time.
We are planning some additional work in the near future - both flooring and possible renovation work, and we already know we will work with Rudy and Jimmy and the entire crew at Kustom Floors. You should definitely do the same!!
Kustom Floors is great with the details. Everything we wanted to have done was accomplished exactly as we had hoped it would be, and exactly as Rudy had promised. We also used his electrician, Jose, to install recess lighting in the livingroom, and like everything else they did the lights are perfect. It's clear that Kustom Floors really cares about the work they perform for their customers. They have a wealth of experience transforming drab rooms into beautiful ones, and their workmanship extends to the care they take in the initial estimate. Right from the start, Rudy patiently worked with us until we had arrived at the exact specifications we wanted for our floors. We will definitely use Kustom Floors for future work at our house.
We had been wanting to replace the carpeting in a number of rooms on the first floor of our home with hardwood flooring. We also decided to include the carpeted curved staircase and second floor hallway and landing into the master suite. Based on the great reviews in Angie?s List we decided to have Kustom Floors give us an estimate. Rudy came out to the house and only after listening closely to what we wanted to do, looked throughout the planned work area, provided some great suggestions to make things look even better and worked up an estimate. Because we were doing some custom work with a curved staircase, he came out a second time to explain in great detail what work they would do. Rudy also brought a number of samples that we could put on the exiting floor and decide the type and color of hardwood flooring that we wanted to use. He gave his opinion and provided pros and cons of each material. His estimate was very thorough and he answered all of our questions.
We decided to go with prefinished hardwood on the floors. Because the staircase was curved, Rudy suggested that we use unfinished wood that they would sand, stain and seal to match the floor, as best they could. Instead of replacing the bannister we decided to sand, and refinish the existing railing and posts, and paint the balusters on the staircase and second floor landing.
Rudy?s brother, Jamie is the supervisor of their crew and also did all of the custom work. Let me say up front that he is a miracle worker. We had two transitions into the kitchen that were uneven due to tiled floor in the kitchen that was installed after the house was originally built. Where we previously had a piece of molding in the doorway between the foyer and kitchen Jamie was able to adjust the new hardwood floor to imperceptibly rise to the level of the kitchen floor at the transition. He also did a beautiful job on the curved staircase. There was a lot of manual cutting and sanding for each tread, riser and bracket.
Jamie?s crew moved all of the furniture, put felt pads on everything that would ultimately touch the wood flooring, put plastic sheeting up on the doorways outside of the worksite and very thoroughly cleaned up each evening after stopping for the day. They arrived every day at 8:00 AM and would rarely leave before 6:00 PM. While Rudy estimated the job would last a week, it actually lasted two weeks because the staircase was more of a challenge than I think he originally estimated. We were fine with this because they took the time needed to do the work correctly, instead of hurrying through the job to meet the initial deadline. Rudy was very attentive and called frequently to see how things were going and to answer any questions that we had. Jamie would provide us with a daily status before he left letting us know what they had accomplished and what was planned for the next day.
The demo of the existing flooring went smoothly and they prepped all areas including adding additional screws to the subfloor to stop them from squeaking. Installation of the new flooring was very methodical and professional. It was very clear that Jamie and his entire crew knew what they were doing.
We are probably not the easiest customers to deal with during a job (perfectionists) and tend to point out any issues before there is a chance to correct them. Due to their do it right the first time attitude, there were very few instances of this and when there were, Jamie patiently listened to us and promptly addressed our concerns.
Kustom Floors also provided the carpet installer to take care of all of the newly formed transitions from wood to carpeting in our second floor bedrooms, and painter to paint the staircase trim work, and balusters.
We highly recommend Rudy, Jamie and their entire crew for any flooring project you might have, no matter the size or complexity.
We challenged Rudy and his team with Kustom Floors to not only refinish the solid maple flooring that was preexisting, but also to match the existing floors with new engineered maple flooring to be installed over a cement slab sub-floor that lead into the kitchen. Our staircase had been carpeted and creaked and flexed when walked upon so that had to be dealt with as well.
Our design vision was to not only match floors but to end up with a modern/contemporary finish throughout the space. That meant sanding the existing floor heavily due to the extraordinary wear and unevenness that were present when we moved in. I was a bit skeptical that this could be done since I was simply unable to see the beauty through flooring that looked like Riverdance had rehearsed there for a full decade.
Rudy and his team, along with his brother Jimmy transformed the entire floor. They began by pulling up the original stairs that were in poor condition and replaced with light maple treads and white rises. When finished with the stairs, aside from the visual impact, they are solid and level and feel like they had just been installed in a new home. They ripped up existing ceramic flooring over the concrete slab and leveled the entire slab. From there, they laid new engineered hardwood of a near-perfect match to the existing maple hardwood. The entire floor was sanded, removing nearly every single blemish that was present and after sanding, the work was done so well, the floor appears now to be entirely flat.
Regarding the finish itself, we chose a finish that would allow the actual color and character of the high-grade maple to remain intact. After applying several coats and sanding in between, we were left with a magnificent result. To finish the job, Rudy's team installed 1" square base trim to complete the modern, streamlined look that we were after.
I highly recommend Rudy and his team with Kustom Floors to perform the same miracles to your floors that his team did to ours. Again, the transformation speaks for itself. We had several friends who had seen the "before" and they had assumed upon seeing the "after" result, that we had laid all new flooring.
You needn't look any further when selecting a team to refinish or replace your floors. Kustom Floors will bring the flooring experience and expertise that you can be completely confident with, all done with very reasonable rates.
When we moved into our home, none of the original character was left intact, it had probably been remodeled about twenty years before, and therefore was out of date. We had a vision of expanding the kitchen and replacing all cabinetry with a clean, modern
design. We also wanted to rethink and improve the flow and usability of the dining and living areas. Our biggest concern with working with any contractor was that we weren't sure if they could follow such a modern design. Futhermore, we weren't sure that it could be done at a reasonable price.
Rudy (owner/proprietor) came out to consult with us several times to make sure that he and his team could fully understand our design vision. It was clear from the beginning of working with him and his team that they were very capable of creating such a
modern space with amazing attention to detail. Some of those elements included drywall returns for doors (no trim, very modern and seamless framing) , installing frameless cabinetry that required perfect alignment to the wall and to adjacent cabinet boxes, and plaster/drywall work that helped to conceal the errors of previous remodels.
Their responsiveness, professionalism, and extraordinary attention to detail are just a few of the many hallmarks that really shined through during our experience working with them. Rudy and his entire team transformed our first floor with such spectacular results that we're actually having the team come back for additional renovations to our second floor. I have no hesitation in highly recommending Kustom Floors and have even referred our neighbors and several friends to them.
Rudy and team truly want to do well by their clients and will do whatever it takes to make your space beautiful. They have the expertise to provide spot-on recommendations regarding design esthetic and actual production of the work. That makes them a 'best choice' in my book.
His team completed an incredible amount of work in just five days. They were seriously professional -- most of the time I was at home during their work day (I work from home) and they were really respectful of my space and did everything they could to limit dust and other inconveniences. They completed everything really quickly and didn't do that thing I was warned of by friends who've used contractors in the past where they leave final touches uncompleted for weeks and weeks. These guys closed out the job, got every detail perfectly correct (even my somewhat odd and detailed paint color requests), did a really thorough clean up job, and left.
They were so detailed and thorough that, among other things, they went out and bought a couple door stops so that the doorknobs on my closets wouldn't put a dent back in the wall where they'd just repaired the dent that had been there for years.
Rudy called to check in every night of the five day job. I mean...these people CARE about their work. I'm having them come back to do the downstairs, now. I would recommend this team to ANYONE. Please, please use them!!
When examining the floors to provide the estimate, Rudy was more thorough than the other company reps who visited, alerting us to some potential problems and explaining what his team would do. The original finish from the 1970s was oil-based, and we wanted a newer-looking, more environmentally-friendly finish. After sanding, they used a low-VOC water-based finish from Bona.
The quoted cost was higher than the competition and it went up from there as explained below, but we are very happy with the responsiveness to our specific needs and with the professional job done. Superior service and materials cost more, because, well, they are better than competition.
What started as a very straightforward refinish job in a reasonably well-maintained residence became more complex when the team discovered some moisture in the subflooring under a few tiles we wished to replace. Those tiles did not match the rest of the flooring very well, and we suspected there was something wrong, as indeed there was. Rudy was careful to arrange for the repairs to be done right and advised of the extra cost and time required (including curing time).

The whole installation went smoothly, was on time, and excellent clean up. I was really impressed with the attention to detail.
they are more expensive but are worth it.?
After this, I added more to what I wanted Rudy?s team to do: replace the ceiling tiles in a kitchen, add shoe molding to the main floor, remove wall paper.
And indeed they are worth it. We did move out while all the work was being done over 3.5 weeks, using the recommended moving company whose team packed some of our belongings (on the main floor only) and stored them in our sun porch and in a POD we rented. We have hundreds of books, which were the major items needing to be packed up. During the first week of the painting, I visited the house daily to watch the progress of the painting team. They were very careful and proud of their work. When we had an invitation to stay at a friend?s house north of NYC, we accepted and I felt very comfortable leaving the house under Kustom Floor LLC?s care. Rudy was always accessible by phone and text message and kept me updated on the progress in the house.
We were back in town in week 3 to pick the stain for the floors and have a sample done on the floor to be sure we liked it. Rudy?s brother, Jimmy, did the sanding with his team and applied a commercial water based finish on the floors. We paid extra for the dust containment system (although Rudy said this was not necessary since his sister-in-law would take care of any clean up). The floors and walls look beautiful; much of the dust was controlled; Lia and her team cleaned up every bit of dust and dirt. The house was in the hands of responsible and reliable people; I was reasonably calm throughout project and I wake up every morning saying to my family, ?Have I told you how much I love the look of this house? since Rudy and his team completed the project.
I am picky, so I had a two page punch out list. The lead painter and his colleague spent a day addressing everything on that list. The only thing I had to do when the team completed their work was sweep the sun porch floor once the furniture and boxes of books were removed.
"The reason we charged $900 for oil based finish and $1000 for water based including shoe molding- was due to the quality finish we proposed, and the number of coats proposed (stain, sealer, and two coats of finish as per manufacturer's recommendations). With poly this would have taken 4-5 days to complete due to drying time! The homeowner did not allow us to explain the process. We are proud to do the same quality work for a large project as a small one, and believe our reviews clearly reflect it!"
