He's good. He primarily sees dogs and cats. He did a good job. It was pretty expensive because the dog is old. I've only been to one other veterinarian and that was on an emergency basis so I don’t know if the price was high or low. I feel I got my money's worth.

I'll start by saying up front that Dr. Silver was pretty much of a jerk to me. I've had pets almost my entire life, and as a result have seen a lot of vets in my time. A year and a half ago my wife and I adopted 2 kittens. Both of them had upper respiratory infections, which for kittens can be fatal. The foster mom had taken them there a few times for treatment. When we went to pick up the cats we were given medicines for dogs and humans, nothing specifically for cats. I was instructed to take the cats in for a check a few days later. We arrived for out appointment, and the staff welcomed me. There was one receptionist, and 2 younger vets. Both of them appeared to have never dealt with a cat before, and they pretty much tortured both of them trying to shove a thermometer up their rear ends. I should note that this is the only doctors office I have seen a mercury thermometer in for years now. So after that Dr. Silver came in looked at the cats quickly, said they were doing fine and walked out less than a minute after seeing the cats. Since I had just gotten the cats and although I consider myself an expert dog owner, this was the first time owning cats, and sick ones at this point. The assistants put the cats in the crate, and I told the assistant that I had several questions for Dr. Silver. After a long wait Silver came in with a "hurry up I'm busy look" on his face. I asked a range of basic questions like how much should I feed them, how often, what should I do if the symptoms persist (they were still sick for another week after this visit), what kind of food should I give them, how often should they take their vitamins, all very basic questions you would assume a vet would know. He gave answers that were pretty much useless, and then had me dismissed from the examing room. No have a good day, hand shake, or hope your cats get well soon. By this point you probably get the idea that if you have a cat you shouldn't use Dr. Silver, unless you are looking for someone who is cold and will treat your pets with little if any respect. Fortunately this story has a happy ending. After getting home I started researching vets in the area, and just looking in the phone book happened upon the Cat Practice. They only treat cats and everyone there is warm personal and loves animals. My cats have now been going there for 2 years, and two of the vet techs watch them when we go out of town.
Response from Chevy Chase Veterinary Clinic
"We have no record of this client visiting our clinic. In addition, we do not have "2 younger vets", nor have we used mercury thermometers for decades. Dr. Silver is very thorough when it comes to treating feline upper respiratory infections and in fact will show clients photographs of how severe they can become and therefore must be taken very seriously. We have a strict protocol on how we treat URI's and would never brush them off as nothing to worry about. I'm not sure which veterinarian this person visited, but it wasn't Dr. Silver."

Dr. Ira Silver is ver thourough and caring in his veterinary service. I've been going to him for about 15 years. The reason I go to him is for the care of my cats. Dr. Ira Silver might be a little on the expensive side but he is still very caring.

I am from a rural area and I am used to country vets and the pricing. Considering where they are located out in suburbia the prices seem to be reasonable. I would definitely recommend them to others in my area.
