Farmer Anne's Kinder, Gentler Shearing & Care

I was unable to contact the wonderful, gentle person, Heidi, who has sheared my llamas for me in the past. I unwisely contacted Anne Shroeder of Star Gazing Farm who I found on the internet. I wanted to schedule the shear at a time when my husband and neighbor girl who help me could be here, but she wouldn't work with that. I use a catch pen training system with the llamas that involves feeding grain. I also have 5 goats who eat much faster than the llamas, so there's a process - goats go outside of the fenced area and are put on leads; llamas go from the fenced area directly into the catch pen. She agreed to call me when she left the job before mine (about a 1/2 hour away) so I could get this all set up. She simply showed up at my front door saying she didn't have cell service in my area, but then my phone rings and it's her helper calling me from my driveway! First llama to be tortured was 5 year old Josephine. Anne tried to interfere with haltering. I said, "No, we're just going to do this the way we always do." Then she wanted her restained in a way I knew was entirely unnecessary. When I objected, she got up in my face and said, "Do you want your llamas sheared or not?" Boy, I sould have said "NOT." Normally a shearer will ask what you want done - barrel, nudey, whole body, etc. In the past we've done back, belly and, every other year, half-way up the neck. She just went ahead and sheared everything including the tail. Then it was my gelding, also 5 years old, Bronze King's turn. He came from the farm where Heidi was a manager and had never been sheared by anyone but her. He did not respond well to Anne's rough handling and became agitated. He now has 2 lacerations on his right hind leg. Most sources recommend leaving 1 - 2 inches of fiber. This shear is so short (@ 1/3 inch) that I am worried about sunburn. If the llamas aren't going to be haltered, the feeding process is the same except I feed them right outside the catch pen with the gate open. The bins with their minerals are hanging on the inside of the gate. After they have their grain and free choice of minerals they usually hang out in the pen for a bit. The day after Anne was here Bronze would not get anywhere near the pen. I had to take his grain to him. The next day, thankfully, things were back to normal. I can't have them afraid of the catch pen; we use it every time they need to be haltered - for wormer injections, visits from the vet or just to go out for a walk around the neighborhood.
