Description of Work: I called Bowie Siding and Roofing as well as three other highly rated roofing companies that I found on Angie's List. Bowie Roofing is the ONLY company that responded to my call for an estimate within a day; providing me with detailed information about my roofing issues and they took the time to answer all of my questions. They are certainly a company I would seriously consider when I make the final decision to have my roof repaired. Very pleased with their professionalism. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the other companies I called; two of which have yet to call me back and the other company, responded after 7- 10 days and was two hours and 20 minutes late for the appointment. I have chosen not to review those companies nor call them back.

Very well.
Description of Work: Bowie Siding & Roofing tore off old roofing, hauled it away, and replaced with new roofing with underlayment and flashing. One concern I had was with an old attic fan that I wanted removed. Bowie did this job and capped off the electrical wiring. I later had an electrician check the job and he said it was proper according to the code, which relieved me. All in all, they were very responsive and helpful.

We had developed a leak in our family room ceiling during the recent hurricane that we suspected was from a problem with the siding that had supposedly been fixed by the previous owner. I called several of the top siding people on Angie's List only to be told that they did not do repairs but would be glad to come out if I wanted all new siding! When I called Bowie, they were very professional, and in fact, called their sales person to come out that day (he was in the area with several other jobs). Their salesman Chris was a joy to work with - no excuses or promises - just honest, upfront answers about what could be done for the repair. (I have aluminum siding so it could be damaged during the removal and replacement process) Chris explained what they would need to do - take off our siding in the damaged area - wrap it with water proofing and reinstall the siding. I asked him to send me an estimate and to also give me an estimate on doing the roof (mine is 15 years old with 15 year shingles and starting to show wear) and a whole new siding job so we could look at all our options. There was never any pressure from him to sell me additional services. The estimate was sent the next day by email and followed up with the delivery of a package outlining all three estimates and included all the specifics on products, etc. My husband and I decided to go with the siding repair (and hope for the best) and put a new roof on. The team that came out to do the siding repair did an excellent job. They got the siding off and on with no damage and wrapped the area in waterproofing to prevent future problems. They also showed us pictures of the area where the leak had come in. They were in and out quickly and left no mess. The day the roof was to be done, I was concerned because we had rain due in the next day. But the guys were there at 7 am, had the old roof off, and the new roof on by 5:15. They put in a roof vent and even removed our two old skylights and installed two new ones for us. They laid out tarps to catch the garbage, moved my things out of the way, and cleaned everything up before they left. I couldn't even find a nail laying around. My neighbors were amazed on how fast they did the job and so were we. We are very pleased with the service and result and definately plan to use this company when we decide to do a full sididng job.

gutter repair

I called Rick to ask him to come out for an estimate for gutter installation. Rick spoke about knowing Bowie houses and about energy efficiency. I got home at the agreed upon time to find Rick sitting in my driveway. The Jesus fish on the side of his truck made me think this wouldn't go well. I went to the side of Rick's truck and we started speaking. I thought he'd get out so we could take a look around the house, but after five minutes of me standing there and him sitting in the truck, I asked him to get out to look around the house. We walked around the perimeter and Rick invited me into the passenger seat to discuss options. He spent most of his time trying to upsell me into getting my roof redone and insulation installed in the space between the second floor rooms and the roof, both with the goal of making the house more energy efficient. I understood his motives, but I just was interested in gutters. I let him ramble on. He took some measurements after I went inside and then he left. About a 5 weeks later, I got the estimate both via e-mail and via snail mail. His daughter said via e-mail that she misfiled my estimate. This was a week after someone else had actually installed the gutters.

Response from Bowie Siding and Roofing Inc
Dear Member, Apparently, at the time of your initial call there was a misunderstanding about what type of estimate you would like because Mr. Turpin was prepared to give you an estimate on a trim package that included gutters but also addressed the specific problems your home has with energy efficiency. The day you were to meet with Mr. Turpin he arrived early/on time. This shows that he is a professional. Despite the Christian fish symbol on his vehicle there was never any mention of religion or Christianity during the appointment so I'm not really sure why you are bringing that up. It was a very hot day and you never invited him in to discuss the estimate which is why he invited you to sit in his air conditioned vehicle. I felt that shows courtesy. Unfortunately, I had made the mistake (which I sincerely apologized to you for) of stapling your job notes onto another customer's paperwork. Therefore I did not immediately send you the estimate. When I realized my mistake I sent the estimate with a note explaining the problem. I did not want you to think that you were intentionally ignored. It was simply human error. I type hundreds of bids per month and every so often I do make a mistake. Again, I'm sorry for the inconvenience and I wish you all the best in your future.

They sell excellent quality windows & doors--both seem very substantial--at a great price. However, make sure to be diligent about following the standard rules for working with contractors: 1. Read over the contract very carefully and make sure to double check what you sign for is what you requested. 2. Be at the house when the work is completed and check over everything very carefully to make sure the work is done properly before signing off on the job.

I want to start my response to this review with an e-mail sent by the member's wife with whom I mainly stayed in contact with throughout the entire project. "Hey Jocelyn! We were both at the house last night and the windows and front door look great! The windows open and close so smoothly!! Love it! As for the storm door / patio door situation: I know both of us want this settled in the easiest way and the least expensive way. We both made mistakes in reading the contract: me in not reading the door proposal close enough, and you with the grids in the patio doors. We could totally honor the contracts as they are. We keep the current storm door and the patio doors are replaced with grids in them. However, on the phone yesterday you said you'd have to get all new panels for that and it would probably be even more expensive then the StormWeld # 21-SS08 (self-storing 7/8 view, white, satin nickel hardware). Can we compromise? We'll forgo having grids in our patio door if you can switch out the storm door. From what you said yesterday, this should be a less expensive option for you. Look forward to hearing from you! Feel free to call: [deleted phone numbers] I won't be at work tomorrow. Joe is coming over tomorrow morning to fix the molding around the door before we move in, which is awesome. Yea! Thanks for all your help! --Member" Basically, from what I can tell the main issues with this job were: 1.) I ordered the sliding glass door WITHOUT grids even though the contract called for grids RESPONSE: The contract did call for grids in the slider. The member still got the right door just the wrong sashes for the door. This was human error on our part because when the mechanic put the order in he forgot to mention the grids which are an additional option for the door. I even double checked the order but still missed this small detail. As soon as I found out I gave the member several options on getting that resolved. One of which was to buy all new sashes which included grids. To resolve this issue the member requested a different style storm door and opted to keep the sliding glass door without grids. 2.) The customer experienced "buyers remorse" with the storm door. A detailed contract was written and signed off on and a picture of the door sent to the customer with the contract but the door style did not live up to the customer's expectations and they wanted a different one. The storm doors from this company are special order and can not be returned/exchanged. Certainly not after they have already been installed. RESPONSE: I purchased and installed a brand new storm door of the members choice even though I gave the member a detailed contract in writing of what storm door there were to receive and sent them a brochure with the contract that included a picture of the door with the page marked. 3.) It took a long time for the job to be completed. RESPONSE: I checked and every appointment we made was kept on the day we said we would be there. The member chose the days to accommodate the members school schedule. The member's wife is a teacher. It did take a while to get the new storm door installed but I have an e-mail from the member's wife asking for us to wait until she got out of school for the year so that she would not have to take off any additional time off of work for this project. They requested a June 28th install. That is the day they came. 4.) The husband does not feel like there was enough communication. RESPONSE: As well as many, many phone calls there were more than 50 e-mails back and forth throughout the course of the project. Many times the member's wife thanked me for working with her. 5.) The customer did not feel as though I was professional because they did not understand the contract and I made a mistake on the sliding glass door order. RESPONSE: I acknowledged my ONE mistake, offered to make it right IMMEDIATELY and went above and beyond all with a spirit of cooperation and willingness to ensure that the customer was happy with the final products they received. There was never at any time any negativity or unwillingness on my part to resolve any issue or concern. I received praise from you for the job and the workmen. The workmen told me that the member's wife was thrilled with the job and extremely nice to work for. 6.) The customer felt we should have changed the interior moldings and sealed gaps. RESPONSE: This was not in the contract. Apparently there were gaps after the member removed the old molding from inside of home. This was much later after we had completed the job and was done on his own. We do not remove the old casing on the inside of the windows. In this case we remove the old sashes from the existing wooden frames and re-use the original wooden frames when we install replacement windows. There are many reasons for this. It is less invasive for the customer and costs less. It would be very expensive to pay someone to replace all wooden casings (material and labor) on the inside and sometimes you also have to do drywall and painting work if you remove the old frame from when the house was built. It would probably cost almost twice as much if you do it that way and it is completely unnecessary. Later when the member chose to remove the interior casings he had an opportunity (which we did not have) to spray a foam sealer in the cracks around the old wood frame from 1950. Over all, I will say that because of the excellent communication and feedback I received from the member's wife during the job I was totally shocked by the somewhat negative review. I came away from the job with a good feeling and thought they did as well. I e-mailed this member and asked them to please contact me to fix any ongoing issues between us and to ask them how I could have served them better. They did not respond to my e-mail.

I knew there was a hurricane on the way so I looked up recommendations in Angie's List and made a call to the best rated company close to me. It took about 4 days for someone to come out to take a look. The roofer came to my house the day before Hurricane Irene was due to hit the area. I knew I had some shingles off. He said $350 to replace 6 shingles and a flange around one of the exhaust pipes in the roof. I didn't have time to get other estimates with the hurricane bearing down on me so the roofer got busy and I went to the ATM to get cash. I will say that his job did the trick. No leaks or missing shingles once the hurricane came through.
Description of Work: The roofer came and replaces six missing shingles on my roof. He had all the tools and shingles with him in his truck so as soon as we agreed on price, he got busy. He didn't accept credit cards and in the age of internet banking, I didn't have a check to give him. So I had to zip over to the ATM to get cash while he was working.

I'm glad we were able to respond to you quickly and fix your problem. We do not accept credit cards because of the fees and headache involved. However, customers do have an option to use a "credit card check" which works the same as a regular check, or drawing money off of their credit card at a bank or ATM. We appreciate your business Member despite the fact that you were not able to use a credit card. Thank you.

We signed a contract with Bowie Siding & Roof on March 7, 2011 for a new roof and gutters on our Bowie Buckingham Rancher. We paid a 1/3 down, and the contract indicated the job would begin in 7-10 days. A week later Chesapeake Roofing showed up to install the Roof. We were not told the job had been contracted out. Chesapeake did a great job, and cleaned up the yard after the installation. After numerous phone calls about when the gutters were going to be installed, Bowie Siding and Roof finally installed the Gutters on April 7, 2011, a month later. The left the yard a mess. I found old gutter nails and sleeves, and trimmed gutter pieces in the lawn and gardens. About a month later, one of the gutter detached from the house during a rain storm. They did come out and fix it a few days later. The interaction was very far from professional. In response to Bowie Siding and Roofing response on the 9-26-2011: The Chesapeake Siding and Roof truck was painted with the company information. It was NOT magnetic signs on the truck. The Bowie Roofing and Siding Sign showed up later, not when the roof was done. I removed it, because I didn't approve put the sign in the yard and would not recommend the company. The gutters were installed a month later only after several calls. At NO time did they indicate a reason for the delay or an estimate of when the job would be done.

We did respond quickly to do the roof. As far as I know all went well and the Beckwell family was satisfied with their new roof. Chesapeake Roofing did not do the roof. Bowie Siding & Roofing did the roof, however our sub-contractor sometimes subs work for Chesapeake and clearly forgot to change out the magnetic signs on his truck. This is embarrassing and frustrating. Our roofer has been with our company for almost ten years and is an excellent roofer. Sometimes, subs have to work for several different companies if times are slow and one company can not provide all of their work. I wish this would not have happened and am sorry for any confusion this caused the Beckwells. I do remember that there was a Bowie Siding & Roofing, Inc. job sign in the front yard while we were working though. As for the guttering, we always strive to do the job in the time frame we indicate on the proposal. However, all time frames are written as "approximate". We do not promise an exact start and finish date due to weather conditions and workload. At that time, there were so many gutter/trim jobs that needed done that we were a little backed up. The roof and gutters are two different contracts and are not necessarily done at the same exact time. We got there as soon as we were able to do the job. By the time we were made aware of the trash the customer had already cleaned up. If given the opportunity we would certainly have cleaned up everything for the Beckwells. We did respond immediately for their other concern of a loose gutter and took care of it in a timely manner. These problems are not normal for us and of course we are not happy that we did not completely satisfy the members. The issues have been addressed with the mechanics involved.

Great. He looked at the roof, told me what needed to be fixed and what the cost would be, fixed the problem areas, took the worn out parts he replaced with him (didn't leave them for me to have to pick up), explained exactly what he did when he finished the repairs, and then wrote up the invoice.

Excellent experience!! I called at 11:30 AM about the above problem, and they arrived at 1:30 PM and did the repairs right there and then. They even gave me a fair price because the job was smaller than they expected. I have used this company for both small and large jobs, and they are always prompt, courteous, pleasant, clean up after themselves, and the prices have been fair. I find it also a welcome experience to be able to get a live person on the telephone instead of voice mail when I call!!!! I would defintely recommend this company and would use them again, as I have.... three times.
Description of Work: I have used this company in the past for larger jobs...... roof replacement, "trim package" of siding around dormer windows, bay window, etc. Today I found a piece of flashing that had come loose from the roof and was hanging loosely. I called Bowie Siding and Roofing and they did the job iimmediately even though it was a small job.

I needed to have some additional work done on my house and they actually connected me with a carpenter. That was great. He came out and he was great. They were very responsive at first but since they sent the carpenter it has been difficult to get a deal going so I will probably just deal with the carpenter. The gentleman that originally came out was very informative, knowledgeable and pleasant. I was actually looking forward to working with them. I would recommend them. My project was a bit complicated and if it had been straightforward they would have probably gotten it done. I never actually got the estimate.

This is really unfortunate. We are obviously in the business of providing proposals and doing jobs. I have no idea what happened in this situation other than possibly there was a misunderstanding between us. I am sorry that the member did not receive all the paperwork he wanted and wish that I could have done so for him. If he were to call again I would certainly do my absolute best to respond in a prompt manner to his request.

Despite the abrasive personality of the owner/contractor, I decided to hire them, but submitted written additions, edits, etc. I wished included in the proposal before I would go to contract. The contractor emailed me stating that they didn't "appreciate it when customer's think they can basically write their own contract," and withdrew their PROPOSAL. I emailed back indicating I didn't appreciate a company dictating to me the services & materials I would be paying for. I requested the PROPOSAL state they carried liability coverage, and the minor changes in the roofing design I wanted. Certainly a potential customer has the right, as well as obligation, to negotiate the terms of a work PROPOSAL before committing thousands of dollars by entering into a contract. Subsequently, I stated I was declining their PROPOSAL and felt their treatment of a potential customer, who would have readily recommended them, was unprofessional, at best. In response to the contractor's version of events: "she requested for the job to be done for a significant amount of money less with several upgrades that she was not willing to pay for. She wanted to upgrade to include ice and water shield for no additional charge, upgrade to shingle over ridge vent instead of aluminum for no extra charge and replace plywood for $50.00 per sheet less than the normal charge. In addition, she wanted a color of shingle that is only available with a 50 yr. Lifetime roof and she did not want to pay the entire upgrade amount for a 30 yr. roof." As stated above, I detailed the additions, etc. I wanted included in the proposal before I would sign a contract, expecting there would be some additional costs. I was never given a specific price that included and changes; they merely withdrew their insufficient proposal. "even before a contract was signed she was already expecting there to be some sort of property damage claim that would have to be resolved." Untrue; I had mentioned that there was some interior water damage as a result of past poor installation/removal of a satellite dish, & I had filed a homeowners claim for the drywall repair INSIDE the house. That matter would have had to effect on installation of a new roof. "In my experience, it is better to just walk away than to try to please people who want more for less and already expect the worst. It is unfortunate that the member feels we were abrasive. I felt that my response to her which included the withdrawal of the proposed contract was as polite as I could make it. I also felt attacked by her when she responded back which cemented my decision to not do any work on her home." Untrue; how could I want more for less if my requests were never considered or given a price? If they believe that communication with a potential customer was even remotely polite, I am at a loss for words. My response was professional and matter-of-fact: no one dictates what services I pay for. "As a contractor we are not forced to work for people that we do not feel comfortable with. In addition, according to the laws of the State of MD and according to the clause on our proposal any proposal we submit may be withdrawn by us if not accepted within 30 days. I'm sorry that the member was offended but at the time I felt my decision was the best for our company." As a consumer, I don't work with companies that aren't willing to provide the information the State of MD REQUIRES be standard on a contract; don't show me respect as a consumer; and aren't willing to work with me to achieve an outcome that is beneficial to all. Finally, I was able to get EXACTLY what I requested from another contractor, at several thousand dollars less!

The member made requests for several items that we would have been happy to provide, such as Home Improvement License (listed on contract), copies of insurances and manufacturer's written warranties, etc. However, the reason we decided not to work with her is because she requested for the job to be done for a significant amount of money less with several upgrades that she was not willing to pay for. Lifetime roof and she did not want to pay the entire upgrade amount for a 30 yr. roof. Lastly, even before a contract was signed she was already expecting there to be some sort of property damage claim that would have to be resolved. In my experience, it is better to just walk away than to try to please people who want more for less and already expect the worst. It is unfortunate that the member feels we were abrasive. In addition, according to the laws of the State of MD and according to the clause on our proposal any proposal we submit may be withdrawn by us if not accepted within 30 days. I'm sorry that the member was offended but at the time I felt my decision was the best for our company.

We called and described the problem. They came by and looked at it (we didn't have to be there) and called back with a quote. They knocked $100 off the price because we already had the material -- several years ago they had done the same job on another part of the house, and left us the roll of rake board cover. We accepted, and the next day it wasn't raining they showed up and did the job. They were quick and professional, and the work looks good.
Description of Work: Replaced the cover on a rake board that had blown off.

Mr. Turpin told me to get the guy back who did the paneling (couldn't - he is dead), then he told me to get the general contractor back. He said that they should fix the problem if they received the money. I agreed, however, they didn't. Mr. Turpin told me this was something he was not interested in getting involved in. Oddly enough, his son called that evening and came by the next day. He said what the general contractor did looked good to him and that he was sure his father would say I needed a new roof. I asked him to have his father come by and give me an estimate for a new roof. I never heard from them again. I really think that Mr. Turpin Jr. was not aware that Mr. Turpin Sr. turned me away.
Description of Work: Water leaks in the house on both sides of fireplace when it rains. I had the house re-sided a year ago then notice the problem within the last 4-5 months. I had a general contractor work on it twice, to no avail (and no guarantee that what he did would fix the problem).

There are some times when we are not interested in trying to fix poor workmanship by other contractors. It is unfortunate that the member was unhappy with our decision, I do wish we could have helped but this situation was just not a good idea for us to get involved in. We have to make these decisions on a case by case basis. I wish the member all the best in the future.

Our phone call was returned promptly. After receiving an estimate, the work was performed in a timely manner. The roof and surrounding area was left neat and clean.
Description of Work: We needed to have our roof vented in order for it to pass inspection prior to selling it.

OVERALL, THEY DID A GOOD JOB. THEY PERFORMED THE WORK IN A TIMELY MANNER AND AT A VERY REASONABLE PRICE, COMPARED TO OTHER COMPANIES WHO HAD GIVEN ME ESTIMATES. HOWEVER, I HAD ONE AREA WHERE I CONTINUED TO HAVE WATER RUN OFF THAT I WANTED TO HAVE REPAIRED. I CALLED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS TO TRY AND GET THIS LAST ISSUE RESOLVED, TO NO AVAIL. THIS TURNED THE POSITIVE EXPERIENCE INTO A FAIR ONE VERY QUICKLY. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT I DIDN'T GET COMPLETE SATISFACTION, AND THEY NEVER CAME OUT TO COMPLETE THE REPAIR DESPITE THEIR PROMISES TO DO SO.
Description of Work: THIS COMPANY PLACED DRIP GUARDS/SHIELDS ON ALL OF MY GUTTERS. THIS DEVICE DIRECTS THE WATER INTO THE GUTTERS WHEN THE SHINGLES ARE TOO SHORT AND KEEPS THE WATER FROM RUNNING DOWN THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE.

This was some time ago. I am not sure why this happened as I try very hard to satisfy every customer. It is unfortunate that we were not able to live up to the member's expectations for us. If another opportunity arises I will certainly strive to make it a pleasant experience.
