Contacted Joe from Blue Flame and he was responsive
Told him I was from out of state and was selling a house in his neighborhood. Home inspector identified some small cracks in the bricks inside the fireplace. Found a buyer for the house but they wanted the cracks repaired before closing.
Joe was responsive and indicated that the cracks were small enough to not even warrant repair based on local building codes and the width of the cracks being under 1/4 of 1 in. He said no repairs were required but the potential buyers persisted so he recommended filling the cracks with fireproof patching compound. The buyers disagreed. Bricks in that size and color were unavailable so Joe recommended doing nothing to the cracks but just adding a steel insert on top of the bricks.
The buyers agreed. Joe and I spoke and I told him that I thought both his markup and installation cost (of $100 alone) was high since installation in this case amounted to transit time and him picking the insert up and placing it inside the FP. Not terribly complicated. I've dealt with countless GCs and subs from all the trades in several major renovations and I found Joe's markup and installation fees to be excessive. I understand time is money and that everyone needs to make a profit but his rates were unreasonable. His advice on doing nothing and using a fireproof patching compound were spot on though.
I think the insert looks horrible but it does not matter what I think as long as the buyers liked it.
Suggest you shop around for a tradesman with more reasonable markup and installation fees.
"I was first contacted by [name removed] on September 26th and completed the work on October 18, 2014. During this time we had several email and phone conversations. I provided and estimate to perform the work to which he agreed. As noted in [name removed] review other, less expensive, options were provided to him. He chose to go ahead with the steel insert because he was selling the house and this is the solution the new buyers wanted. I came up with a permanent solution that was both timely and cost effective. I did my job, for the quoted price and completed the work on schedule. If not for the work I did [name removed] would not have sold his house. Once the work was completed I sent [name removed] his invoice. I no longer heard from him every day. He stopped taking my calls and did not return them. Instead he sent me an email stating “If you are flexible on your price, I will be flexible on the write up or not do one at all.”. I repeat, AFTER the work was completed [name removed] tried threating me to get me to reduce the price. If he was unhappy with the price he should have simply said no thank you and hired someone else. Instead he is badgering me, threating me and damaging my good reputation. I have already contacted the Customer Subscription Team at Angie’s List and will try my best to have [name removed] removed from Angie’s List. No one should be subject to this harassment."
"I just wanted to say Thank You for your business and the review. I will be looking forward to doing business with you. Thanks again, Joe Mowbray"
