About us
Topline Moving & Storage is a full-service mover in Maryland, DC, and Virginia. This moving company handles residential and commercial moves, including local moving, long distance moving, and international moving. The company is fully licensed and insured by the DOT, and has an excellent record with the BBB. It is an American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) member, and it provides additional valuation for your belongings via Baker International (a moving insurance company). A significant part of this company's business is made up of returning clients and their friends and families, and the company's mission is to be the kind of mover you can refer with confidence to your friends and family. It's long-term goal is to work almost exclusively based on its reputation in the Greater Washington DC Metro Area -- a feat that may take several more years. Topline has roughly 30 hard-working staff members that work around the clock to provide high quality customer care. The company rewards employees that create a favorable customer experience in order to enhance its level of serivice. Prices for local moves are based on a per hour rate, with a minimum of 3 hours for labor time, and 1 hour for travel time. Packing materials are available for an additional charge if the customer needs them. For liability purposes and for the purposes of adhering to federal regulations, no loose items are allowed on the truck, which means that all household and/or commercial goods must be packed prior to being loaded on the truck. The customer may pack their own belongings, and these items are classified as "self-packed" items. For liability purposes the movers do not open self-packed items, and cannot verify the quality and integrity of the packing methods and/or materials used, which is why the moving company does not take responsibility for self-packed items. Travel time includes the time it takes to get from the company's warehouse to the customer's current home, as well as the time it takes to return from the customer's new home back to the company warehouse. Travel time is a flat fee of 1 hour, and it does not vary no matter how much traffic there is, or how long the drive actually takes. Labor time starts from the time the movers get to the customer's house and the customer asks them to begin working. It includes the time it takes to pack the customer's belongings, load them on the truck(s), drive to the new home, and unload everything into the new location. Long distance jobs are based on the weight of the customer's total shipment, and is verified using government weigh stations. The truck is weighed prior to arriving at the customer's home, and after picking up the customer's shipment, the truck is weighed again. The difference between the empty truck weight and the weight of the truck plus the shipment equals the actual weight of the shipment. Both times that the truck is weighed the customer is provided with an official receipt for the weight of the truck, so the process is very transparent. Packing materials on both long distance and local moves can be built directly into the quote, and the company is happy to provide the customer with fixed quotes or not-to-exceed quotes, in order to protect customers from overshooting their budgets. In-home estimates are the best way to assess the scope of the moving job, but jobs can also be estimated by phone, or by online chat at www.toplinemoving.com. All moving jobs have an 8% fuel charge. Much like the airline industry, prices for moving jobs are based on the company's volume, so it is best to book as early as possible. The more full the operations calendar is, the higher the prices can climb. Typical prices for 4 men and a truck range from $120 to $150/hr, while 3 men and a truck are between $99 to $120/hr, and 2 men and a truck range from $79 to $99/hr. Our main complaint is that the movers damaged our property and took an extremely long time to make amends. Toward the end of the packing phase of our move, one of the workers went up into our attic to bring down boxes, without our knowledge. (We had planned to bring the boxes down ourselves, and had told the crew as much.) The worker stepped through our attic floor and put a big hole in our bathroom ceiling. He did not bother to tell us what had happened, but I noticed it on a final walk through the house. We were told by the company that we could either take their offer of $100 for our repairs, or go through their claims process to reach a settlement to repair the damage. We had to provide written estimates for the repair, and then had to wait for the 90-day claims process. Meanwhile, we had tenants moving in to the house, with no way to repair the bathroom. At the end of the 90-day process, the claim department told us that the moving company was responsible for repairing the bathroom. Why it took three months to reach this conclusion is beyond me. Within a week of this decision, the moving company sent a contractor to the property to make the repairs.
This company would probably be good as long as nothing goes wrong, and if most of the boxes are already packed. However, the management appears to be unfamiliar with their own packing procedures and claims process.
Both times the crew were professional and took very good care of my belongings. They packed all the stuff up and carefully stored it in their storage.
I would always use them, and have them already scheduled to move my mother's stuff to an estate auctioneer.
