They say you pick your guy first, then spec your project. This was certainly the case for us. Don Patterson was an absolute pleasure to work with. He is professional and honest to a fault. We got four estimates for the kitchen renovation, and all were pretty much the same. We had some tricky problems with walls full of plumbing and heating ducts, but he was able to deal with them all, and we ended up with exactly what we wanted. We had used an architect to prepare initial designs, but, thanks to Don's design expertise, we were able to come up with the final design without having to use the architect.
The project started and proceeded on schedule. Don's crew and subcontractors were all quite competent, reliable and easy to work with. Any issues were quickly resolved. Repairs, corrections, replacements were few and were promptly dealt with, no questions asked. The only negative is that we felt the Aristocraft cabinets we got, although excellent, were not quite up to the quality of the Honeybrook cabinets we replaced (Don installed these in our garage at no additional cost). Most of the drawers did have quiet-close glides but some did not. Don ordered and installed new glides for those.
Because of plumbing issues the final aspect of the kitchen remodeling necessitated the remodeling of the master bath and closets. These were also done in a professional and timely manner. Elimination of a bump-out in the kitchen ceiling required the relocation of the toilet in the master bath, which in turn required taking space from the master bedroom closet. However, borrowing from a closet in an adjacent room and installation of closet organizers ended up with far more efficient use of the closets and no net loss of space.
We had long wanted an upstairs laundry (we've been in this house over 30 years). This project went off without a hitch as we converted a large linen closet to a laundry while still retaining some linen storage.
The next year we had Don back to complete the final stage of the transition from a small concrete patio to a screened porch (1987), to a year-round sun room (1999), to finally a proper family room (2014). This 16x20 room had windows on all three sides, a total of 12, each 4 feet wide. These were replaced by a 4-foot picture window flanked by 2-foot double-hung windows on the two sides of the room and a 12-foot bay window on the long side facing the back yard. We also had him extend the wall on the house side by 6 inches on either side. Since energy efficiency was also a goal of this project (old windows were aluminum, new ones vinyl), we also replaced the aluminum siding on the whole house with vinyl. Once started the project proceeded apace and was finished quickly and with no problems. Unfortunately the start of the project was delayed because, as initially fabricated and delivered, the windows were the wrong size. To be sure, this was an annoying inconvenience, but the measure of a mistake is how it is dealt with. In addition to a $300 credit, Don allowed us to donate the incorrect windows to ReStore for a $6,000 charitable deduction on our taxes.
We were not entirely happy with the siding subcontractor. The finished job was quite good overall, but we needed to keep after them on some of the details.
Again, Don Patterson is excellent to work with, and we would certainly use American Priority again.
