We had a 100+ year old oak that was in serious decline (in a hard-to-reach area of the yard) and had worked with a well-known "chain" company but when it came time to remove the tree they'd been pruning for years, I was amazed to see that theirs was the highest bid by thousands of dollars. So, we looked for a locally owned tree company and found Pikesville Tree Service/Y&L Landscaping. They did fantastic work, and I highly recommend them. We were so impressed with every aspect of this company. In addition to removing the tree they ground the stump, and re-graded/seeded the lawn (we worked with both the landscaping and tree service parts of the company). Their bid was very competitive, communications were professional, prompt, and effective. The tree and lawn specialists were knowledgeable, courteous, and neat (as neat as you can be when doing such a task!), and they really care about the quality of their work. Perhaps the most refreshing thing was the communication with the customer service/"sales" folks. They care about much more than making the sale - they really want the experience to be great and the work to be excellent, and they'll do what it takes to achieve that.

I've known them now for about 10 years. They started out just mowing the lawn and then they branched out into doing landscaping. It is a small company. The proprietor is very congenial and he is personally involved. You can go around the area and pick out the better landscaping and it is usually his work. His price is very competitive. He will do anything from small residential to large commercial projects.
