The owner (George) returned my call promptly and he went to inspect the condition of the roof the next day, which really helped us since our contract to buy the house had an approaching deadline to complete the inspections and there was more snow in the forecast. George got back in touch promptly and provided his recommendations. He was courteous and extremely knowledgeable. It gave us some peace of mind going into closing to know that the roof was in decent condition. We have not had any work done on the roof yet, but we can apply the cost of the inspection to the repairs.

We looked for a roofer and got multiple estimates for many, many months. Prices ranged from a low of $8K to an absurdly high $26K. Our neighbors had some repair work done by GEM, and we decided to get an estimate from them. George is very knowledgable, finding similar issues with the other roofers we had out. He provided a well-priced estimate immediately, and we decided to go with him. He called a few days later and said they would be by "sooner rather than later" then called the next day and they came out a couple days after that. They did the whole roof on one warm, sunny February day. They returned two days later to do the gutters, and it was all done. Very clean, very nice install, and a thorough cleanup. Well-crafted flashing, for example bent into the chimney mortar.

GEM (George) was great. His price was very competitive, and he is an attentive contractor. Although I found he didn't return calls right away, I quickly figured out that he received the messages and was acting on them. He made every effort to get to the job in a timely manor and was great about followup. Am ready to sign him up for yearly maintenance of this precious slate roof!

Fine. George's men were courteous and professional and even though this was a minor job George himself came by to check up on things.

They came out really fast, called us back right away and came out pretty quickly. I think, they really know what they were doing. We didn't have any problem with the work they've done.

I had a particularly elusive leak in my slate roof. George Miles was the third in a set of roofers I had contracted to correct the leak. George took the initiative to work with me and come to my house when it was raining and get in the attic to pinpoint the specific location of the leak. He then made the appropriate repairs that, with a few rain events since, has not reappeared. George can be a little difficult to contact but he is very professional, does excellent work, and is reasonably priced. I will continue to have him do preventive and corrective work on my slate roof.

George was very honest and completed the job in a professional and timely manner, and with no fuss. He was very straightforward at the time of negotiations, and his follow up was good - not intrusive, but persistent in a good way. We were very happy with his work, and will definitely consider him for future jobs.

Everything went well. George is very busy so be persistent when trying to reach George. I have used GEM slate before and highly recommend the services.

They were fine and the work has held up. The price was good. His responsiveness was not the greatest.

He was great. He is pretty honest which I like. The quality of his work is good. He was professional and responsive. He was quick and fast. I think I spent around $3500. I would absolutely use him again in the future if necessary.

George does great work, and prices are reasonable. Unfortunately, George has taken on more customers than he can service in a timely manner. He has recently not returned phone calls. I am disappointed that l will need to use another roofer. However, his unresponsiveness has reached an unacceptable level. I would used George again if/when he becomes more responsive.

Prompt, and I think a fair price and so far looks like really good quality work. Would definitely recommend. He is really busy, but will work on timing with you.

Roofers who really know how to work on slate are hard to come by, and George is an absolute catch. His work is great. The first time, George came when he said he would, did the work efficiently and pleasantly, did a good job with the slate, the gutters worked great, and he cleaned up nicely. The prices were reasonable. Same thing with the second time. The only reason I marked "good" on punctuality is not that he didn't show up on time, but that both times I called for a week or so before I could get him to call back. I believe he was out of town, so maybe that explains it, but it did happen twice. It was not a serious problem, but it could have been if we'd had a serious leak.

The service went very well. They were very prompt, did what they said they would do, and the work seemed very high quality. Everything has held up so far.

The project went very well. The GEM Slate team arrived on the property on the date arranged and brought the required materials. They were very courteous and got right to work. They explained what they were going to do thoroughly. The end of the day came before they completed and they agreed to finish the work the following day. The team did return the following day to complete the work. They cleaned up after themselves and from the ground it looked like the work was well performed. My only concern that led to a B+ on quality was the speed with which they worked. While speed does not necessarily impact quality, they were only on the property about 3 hours to complete 50 slate replacements, re-cementing, and the gutter work. Even with a crew of 3 people, that seemed very quick. I have not had enough rain to speak to the effectiveness of the work, but I do worry somewhat when things are done so quickly. Otherwise, they were outstanding and I would recommend them highly. They even offered to replace my soffit light bulbs that had burned out. I do plan to call on them again.

Recently purchased the house that has a nearly 70 year old slate roof, which developed a leak shortly after the move in. Although the house was "inspected" before the purchase, George, the owner of Gem, felt that the inspector missed the condition of the roof. I called several of the roofing companies listed on Angie's 2 days before the hurricane was due to hit. George responded within about 15 minutes and was able to inspect the roof within about 3 hours of my call. He agreed that it needed to be fixed before the storm and made arrangements to do the work the next day. The work was performed as scheduled and although we thought we did have a leak in the bathroom (which George inspected the next day) it turned out to be a leak from under the sink, and in fact, we had no leaks during the very heavy rain. While I did not have the opportunity to "shop" the price, it seemed reasonable, but more importantly, it was done correctly. George now has us on a 6 month inspection cycle to look over the roof and make any necessary repairs, as well as clean the gutters, so that we can maximize the life span of the existing roof.

George is great. He came out to inspect and gave an estimate free of charge on work that had been done poorly by another roofer. He also agreed to take pictures of the roof before, during and after repairs to help me with my complaint resolution process. He is fair and a great person to work with. I would highly recommend him. He will honestly tell you if a repair is possible or if a new roof is needed. A quality that is hard to find in a roofer.
