They never called me back. I can understand if they don't have service on the weekends. But one would logically think that they would call me back the following business day, but they didn't.
On Monday, I called a different company who showed up promptly and told me that there should be a float switch installed in the drain pan to cut off the power if the pan filled with water. He thought that maybe Clean Air didn't install one initially, but actually they did. They just installed it on the highest point of the drip pan, so it never engaged to shut off my air handler. I've had nothing but problems with shoddy installation that Clean Air preformed.
"[Member Name]: According to our records, your unit was installed in November of 2008. Your maintenance contract with Clean Air was cancelled in February 2011 due to non-payment. A certified licensed technician from Clean Air has not been to your home to service your unit for over 3.5 years. Please see below regarding proper maintenance of your HVAC system directly from the Amana website. Proper maintenance of your system could have prevented the leak.(Weekend service calls are reserved for policy holders only). If you have any additional questions, please contact our office. Why should I perform preventive maintenance? ■Heating and cooling systems work incredibly hard to perform their functions for your household. The constant stopping, starting and continual operation can wear down a machine quickly and unexpectedly if the proper care and maintenance is delayed. However, by performing preventive maintenance, or servicing your system regularly, you can maximize the life-cycle of your heating or cooling unit and guard against many unexpected failures ■Preventive maintenance inspections performed on a regular basis can uncover leaks, rust, rot, soot, frayed wires and corroded electrical contacts. What equipment requires preventive maintenance? ■At least once a year, we suggest that homeowners schedule a professional tune-up for the central heating and cooling system in their home. ■Inspections on boiler and furnace systems should include duct work, pipes, dampers, valves, the chimney, registers, radiators, pumps, blowers, fuel lines, the gas meter, oil tank and every part of the actual furnace and boiler. ■Meanwhile, heat pump and air conditioning unit inspections should also include inspections of the fan, compressor, indoor coils, outdoor coils and refrigerant lines."
Company #1 sent a salesman who was excellent in every way and very impressive. This company offered a low-end 13 SEER option and a higher-end 18 SEER option which was a reasonable option after rebates. They also said they could install the new unit on Friday or Saturday (6/27/14 or 6/28/14) if I made my decision by Tuesday (6/24). The choices were a Trane 2.5 ton 13 SEER unit for $5,225 or a Trane XL18i, 3 ton, 2-stager at $5,700 after rebates. The price difference seemed worth it considering the much better efficiency of the more expensive option.
Company 2 just couldn't compete with company #1 in presentation, pricing or being able to do the job quickly. That left me just to meet with Jim on Monday. We met as planned and Jim offered me a low-end and higher-end option. He didn't provide me with pricing during the visit and this almost made me go with company one's high option right there and then but he said he could e-mail me the offer the next morning (Tuesday 6/24). He couldn't compete with the higher-end option but proposed a Carrier Comfort 13 2.5 ton 13 SEER unit at $4,010 after a $200 Clean Air Coupon.
I called both Jim and the salesman from company 1 and asked more questions. The offer for the Trane 18 SEER was reduced to $5,500. Jim said $4,010 was his best offer. Since I am thinking of selling my house soon and Clean Air sounded good on Angie's List and both could do the job on Friday, I chose to go with Clean Air and e-mailed the signed proposal Tuesday late afternoon. I was having difficulty getting my work schedule around being off since the heat pump died so I was very precise about providing the different phone numbers I would be at at different times and I reorganized my work schedule around this.
So, it was a bit frustrating on Wednesday when I called in remotely to one of these numbers and got a voicemail message from Will from Clean AIr saying he needed to get into my house on Thursday , 6/26 between 10-11 AM in order to get measurements to be able to do the job on Friday. After all I'd been through rescheduling my work appointments, there was no way I could make this appointment and I got irritated because I was under the impression all was a go. Also, the call came about 3:30 on Wednesday and Will said he would only be there until 4:30. I didn't get the message until around 4 and almost missed the call. I called the office irritated and considered canceling the job and let Will know I was a bit upset about this. It didn't help when he claimed it wasn't his fault because he called the only number he had. This seemed like bad communication within the company to me. After listening to me complain about all this, He said it really wasn't necessary to get there Thursday and reassured me the job would still be done as good without the Thursday visit. So we agreed to meet Friday around 8:40 or so.
I received a call from Charlie Friday morning about 8:48 to let me know he'd be arriving about 9:15. Charlie and John arrived at 9:20. Both of them were excellent the entire time they worked on the job. They worked straight through until after 4 PM to get the system installed. I'm writing this about an hour after they just left. My house is cooling down and the system appears to be working fine.
While I was upset with the Will call on Wednesday, it wasn't as bad in retrospect as it appeared to me at the time. Still, it would have been nice if Jim would have told me about Will needing to get in my house before I signed the contract and if Will would have been given my phone numbers so I would have received his call in a m ore timely manner. Bottom line though, Clean Air did the job they proposed on schedule and did it well. I'm very satisfied at this time and I'd use them again and would highly recommend them to others.
