Marc and a younger (less experienced - maybe intern?) inspected the attic for entry points and signs of animal presence and determined that there was raccoon feces, and that they broke through the metal screen I had put up last fall (we had an issue with squirrels in the attic last year). They baited two traps with marshmallows and fish (and left some of the remnants on my lawn, which I noticed later and had to wash away so our dog and another neighborhood dog wouldn't eat it). The traps were placed on the roof and screwed down in place. I asked about how the holes would be filled, and he said with caulked screws, and that leaks wouldn't be a problem. Totally acceptable. He asked me to monitor the traps and notify him if we did or didn't see any raccoons, because if they weren't captured, that could be a sign that they were no longer in the area.
The next day I received a call from Marc in the morning (which I missed) but I texted him to let him know that we had not heard any noise that night and that the traps were empty. He sent a couple of other guys out to the house (which luckily my wife was home), to go pick up the traps, put screen over the vents (entry points) and pick up the feces in the attic. He did call to let me know that they were coming, but I was in a meeting, so they showed up before I could notify my wife.
They completed the work, and I called Marc to ask him if the screens were placed on the outside or the inside of the house. He said "outside" since that prevents other animals from nesting in the area between the louvers and the screen. Makes sense, though I was concerned with how it might look. I also asked him for a price reduction since there were no animals captured, so no need to take care of them/euthanize them. He said there wouldn't be any discount since they still had to come out, and still completed the work. That's where I take some issue.
The total cost of the work was quoted at $450, minus the pre-paid Angie's list deal ($45.99) minus the additional $25 credit noted in the Angie's list deal, so $379 remaining balance (or total paid of $425). Marc said that the inspection is typically $100 (so in theory if I hadn't bought the deal, it would have been a total of $550).
Let's just take the $425 number to work with. There were 4 guys who spent a total of 4 man-hours at the house doing the work, which involved going up into my attic for a few minutes, identifying the entry point, and feces, then baiting some traps with maybe $15 worth of fish/marshmallows (if that) and then screwing the traps on the roof. Then driving back out, removing the (empty) traps. Putting maybe $25 worth of screen over the louvers and picking up some feces. There are overhead costs, of course, like maintaining a license, insurance, benefits for your employees, gas for driving out to the site, etc. But even still. Let's say these guys get paid $35/hr (70k/yr), that still leaves $62.50 per person per hour of overhead ($250 of overhead for this particular job). Very much seems like I'm being overcharged for the task performed.
Had there been raccoons that needed to be taken/euthanized, I can totally understand needing to pay more - there's cost for the potassium chloride, the danger of handling the animal, etc. Sure, I'd pay a premium for that. I can't do that myself. But when it comes down to it, I really think I could have been given some money off for the fact that no animals were captured. Hence the rating of "Bad" for cost.
