The deck was installed in 2012. In 2017 I noted separation between the deck and the deck supports. He said he would fix it at no charge and blamed the problem on the subcontractor. His idea of fixing the deck at no charge was to pay my brother $150 to cut shims and place them in the gaps between the deck and the supports. Lasted a month or two, but further settling and the problem continued. He no longer returned calls and I ended up paying $4,000 to have the repair done properly. The footers were not the right depth or size. The deck wasn't properly attached to the house either.

The only glitch we had was that Timber Tech sent fasteners that were not what we expected.  These had to be exchanged.  Marty was in touch with Timber Tech and a replacement was immediately arranged.

I should start off by recommending that you find another contractor.

I called Marty in January.  He arrived a few days later to survey.  We discussed the job and he led me to believe that there would be no problems and that he could take care of my needs.  A few days later he arrives with the contract, the price was more than I had expected - I had gotten a quote for the metal railing that was 1/4 of Marty's total price.

I gave Marty the down payment and he told me several things at that meeting:

1) He was going to build the wooden railings at his father-in-laws shop and then have them installed on site.

2) He was going to use high end aluminum railings so they wouldn't rust.

3) He would return in May to paint the railings - which was included in the price (I should have known something was up when he said - you need to call me - because sometimes I am so busy I forget to come back and paint the railings).

A few weeks later Marty called to inform me that he had a sinus infections, and would have to delay installing the railing. He said that he was waiting on the metal railing order to come in, and he was working on the wooden railings at the shop.

A few more days pass by and Marty was still sick.  I told him I would rather have him wait and do the job right, rather than rush it because he was sick.  Instead Marty sent out another contractor - that he does work with - to do the job.  When this other contractor arrived he had no idea of what Marty and I had discussed and was already starting to dig up shrubs in my front yard without even talking with me.  I went out and had a rather frustrating argument telling the contractor what Marty and I had already agreed on several times before.  For instance the agreement was that the metal railing would be anchored to the stone step risers, not to the wall adjacent to the steps - however the contract just assumed that he was going to install the latter. I also discovered that some of the design choices that Marty the contract thought wouldn't work.

Later that day the contractor starts working on wooden railing. This is the same wooden railing that Marty claimed was already made in his father-in-laws shop.  However the railings were just a bunch of pressure treated boards that the contractor bought that day.  The contractor set up a portable table saw and proceeded to build the wooden railings.  I am happy to say that I am happy with the results, although they used pressure treated wood rather than something more stable and I already have some major splits and cracks in the wood.

Now the metal railings was a totally different story.  First I was told by the contractor that what Marty and I had agreed on wasn't possible because Marty had already purchased all the supplies for an alternative configuration and it was too expensive to purchase more railing components.  Next I found out from this contractor that the "high end" fencing Marty insisted was extra expensive because it was Aluminum was actually Steel.  The following day the contractor and his crew finished up the metal railing and left.

Marty didn't hesitate to stop by within hours to get his 2nd check of the balance I owed.  Shortly after Marty left I took a look at the work once again in full daylight.  The wooden railing looked good, and Marty insisted that he would have someone come out in May to paint the railing.  The metal railing was a completely different story.  First it looked like the contractor had never installed one of these railings before.  The craftsmanship was very poor.  The anchors of the railings to the stone used four bolts, on 2 of the brackets they broke off the screw heads - I'm assuming when they inserted the screw, and didn't bother to replace them.  The brackets were then suppose to be covered with metal brackets to hide the anchor and the bolts, instead they squirted a caulk around the edges using a color that didn't match the stones at all.  Oddly enough when they used caulk on the wooden stairs they used a caulk that exactly matched the stone color.  To level the posts pieces of pressure treated wood were hammered in under the anchors - something that would start to break down and decay after a few seasons - and which was not properly sealed with caulk.

Attached to the anchors were posts. All of the posts were scratched or damaged in some way during installation - so much for the paint preventing rusting.  One post - right at the front of the steps on the most visible side had a dent like someone had hammered something into the side of it.  Upon closer inspection there were several dents and scratches and they used black spray paint to cover them up - a spray paint that they let run and which also blew over to coat the post of my newly purchased outdoor lamp. The paint basically drew attention to the errors rather than hide them. The top of the posts were 6 inches above the railing, and were not cut down to an inch or so above the railings looking strange and incomplete.   The cutting of the railing sections - which attached between the posts - was equally sloppy, with black caulk was squirted hastily onto some of the joints in an effort to "seal" or hide the railing.

Needless to say I was pretty p***** at Marty, and contacted him, saying that the craft of the metal railing was not acceptable and I want him to replace or remove the metal railing.  Marty replied that the railing components were very expensive and he was already in the rears for having to pay another contractor for doing the job.  We went back and forth and ultimately compromised that Marty would replace the most damaged sections and posts of railing (one which he claims that I damaged - although I kept it in its original wrapping in a carpeted basement the whole time I had it, and only moved it once when carrying it up out of my basement to give it to the contractors). After Marty continued to insist that the railing was too expensive I found the railing components online, and it turned out that the posts were less than $25 per post, there was $30 can of touch up paint he could have bought, as well as the anchor caps (which cost less than $5 a piece).  So in short, this over priced railing was a myth. He basically couldn't be bothered trying to stand behind his work.

In the end Marty agreed to come out an replace the most damaged of the posts, properly caulk the metal, touch up (using the proper paint), add covers to where the anchors were, and cut down the tops of the posts.  Well that was 6 months ago, and despite many phone calls and emails Marty has yet to have fix the railing. Also he never sent anyone over to paint the wooden railings - which I ended up doing myself after numerous guarantees by Marty that he would "send someone over in the next 2 weeks".

Marty was dishonest, overpriced, and did not have any concern for the quality of his work.

There are plenty of other people out there who install decks and work on fences and railings - I would strongly encourage you to look elsewhere rather than risk getting taken advantage of as I was.

Marty who owns Home Deck inc was responded very quickly to the request for an estimate, he reviewed the work and chatted with me so that he fully understood what I wanted. He provided me with several suggestions on how to best repair the deck including options to either go with more expensive solutions that entailed more work but would last longer as well as simpler solutions that would perhaps be good for 5-10 years. He responded to all of my questions with very good explanations and also went over the pros and cons of other ideas that I had in mind. His communication was excellent and he forewarned me of a delay due to the late delivery of some materials. However, he completed the job on the same day as scheduled. I felt very comfortable with his knowledge and would definitely use him again.

Work took longer than expected due to severe weather. Otherwise, work went very well. Contractor always arrived on time and kept me informed of delays. Contractor fully explained slight cost overage (some additional materials and labor were required) and we negotiated final payment.

From the very first meeting with Marty, the owner, and his brother Mike, I was impressed with both men; however, it wasn't until the work began that I was truly able to appreciate their creativity, skill and problem-solving ability. It was clear that not only did I have to be satisfied; they had to be satisfied, as well. When any construction issue came up, they persisted until they felt the result was 110% perfect. In addition to their professionalism, both men were true gentlemen. It should also be noted that they were working with new materials requiring new techniques. They could have tried to talk me into using products they had used before, but they were respectful of my wishes. They listened to my requests and had the utmost patience when I requested a few changes as the work progressed. For the most part, they did the work themselves although they occasionally did bring in helpers who work with them regularly. Excellent company!

Initially, things went extremely well and I waited as long as I could before submitting the report in order to give them the opportunity to address an outstanding concern. I chose this provider because of the combination of reputation/price/scheduling. They were able to get the deck finished sooner than the other contractors. In fact, they were able finish before the contract date and we had use of the deck for labor day. However, there is a wobbly post that was brought to Marty's attention on 9/3. Not a major issue, and up to that point he had been very responsive so I didn't think too much about it when I gave him the final payment. He stated it was a 10 min fix and he would be by that next Tuesday to complete it. That week went by without a word so I called him and he promised that it would be complete by the next Wed. Not a word from him, so I sent him an email and he left me a voicemail stating it would be done the next Wed. Again, not a phone call/email, no communication. Essentially, I've had virtually no communication with Home Deck since they've received final payment. Being a sales professional myself, lack of communication is one of the fastest ways to erode customer confidence. This is a "10 min fix" and it's been almost a month. So naturally, there is concern that if there was a major issue with the deck, we'd be on our own. In their defense, they have stated that they stand by their work. We just haven't seen it in practice yet.

The back porch looks great, although we have had to "wipe down" the final oil treatment of the wood several times due to the fact that the porch is shaded, and temps have been cool.

Marty did a fantastic job on our deck and we absolutely love it. We had talked to several other Deck companies prior to finding Home Deck on Angie's List. After meeting with Marty on 3 different occasions, we knew he was the guy we wanted to build our deck. He's a true professional and took the time to explain our options and answer all of our questions. He was very responsive to our phone calls prior to, during and after the deck was completed. Overall, it was a great experience. We highly recommend you consider HomeDeck if you need a new deck.

I really liked the job they did. It really adds a lot more character to my house. I felt that the price they charges was within reasonable because they took care of providing the materials and getting them to the job-site. I would refer their work to others looking to build a new deck on their house.

Based on reviews on Angie's List we called Home Deck on a Saturday. The following Monday Marty came out and gave us an estimate for a new deck. Work started two weeks later. We felt the price was very fair. Marty was able to save some of the original structures and support from the original deck. The work was completed on time within one week (despite days of rain). We are very happy with our new deck and the price. Marty was always on time, communicated with us on a daily basis, the price was right and the workmanship good. I would highly recommend using this company.

Marty Dillon did an exceptional job. He was very polite and professional during our initial meeting; explaining everything he would do and the materials he would use. He was able to start our project several days early. ( to our delight) He communicated when he would be here at our house so we knew when to expect him. He worked by himself and I never saw him take a break. Every evening he cleaned up and stored supplies neatly. The deck is beautiful. I only wish he did other projects--he is really good.
