"Hello Mr. [Member Name Removed], Thank you for your ratings on Angie's List. Our company takes pride in the manner of the work we do from the moment you call into our call center to the meeting with our professional service technicians. It was a pleasure speaking with you on the phone earlier today and I am happy to hear that in fact you will be continuing to use our company future."
I've used Pann in past all for HVAC work. Here is the good:
Punctual - always on time and when running late they call 30 mins ahead. If they have to reschedule you are top of list.
Clean - they walk in house with booties over boots and keep work place clean
Knowledge - Depends on tech. They have techs that are experts in specific field. One guy for controls, one guy for plumbing (master), one electrician (master).
Customer Service - Top notch. The one bad experience I had with them was corrected, money refunded and no arguments.
The no so good (can't say bad)
Because of experts in each area work sometimes takes more than one visit. Example, control expert may need plumber to come change something he can't do.
Price - Higher than others. But work and parts used are top quality AND you can haggle to a point. I also have a service plan with them for HVAC and it allows discounts on other work like general plumbing.
For me quality, familiarity with system and customer service justifies the cost. Again, that is my personal opinion.
On the plus side, the technician was friendly, clear, and professional. He investigated the problem, and was able to fix it on the spot. The price seemed rather steep, though. Pann has a subscription plan, where you can pay a fixed amount every month in exchange for priority service and discounts, and the technician tried to sell me on it. However, after the very poor punctuality that I experienced, and the lackluster reviews on Angie's List, I wasn't willing to tie myself to this company, so I declined. He kept on pushing the subscription service suspiciously hard, though, which was annoying.
I would consider using Pann again if they offered some sort of incentive for me to do so. But the initial experience I had with them left a bad impression.
He said the reason he was so far off was because we needed to have an additional power circuit installed in our electrical panel to accommodate the electrical needs of the unit. But we showed him our electrical panel when he came to give us the estimate, so it was only because he was incompetent that he didn't realize that our electrical panel, as is, was not sufficient.
He also estimated that it would just take one day to install the system. It took an entire week.
He also did not tell us that the workmen would be cutting a number of holes in our ceiling (in order to snake wires and tubes to the units). Furthermore, the workmen had access to our laundry closet (a small room in our hallway) in order to route the wires etc. The first day they locked the room. It had a washer and dryer in it. Why would they lock that??? They had to use some lock picking tools to unlock it. We never have had a key to that room. Why would we lock it?
When the units had been installed they said they were "all done". I got home and there were 4 holes in my ceiling, and the controls had not been attached to the walls. Naturally I called and complained and they said that the cost for re-plastering my ceiling where they had cut holes was not included in the price. REALLY??? You call that a completed job? After a lot of angry words, they agreed to come back and fix the ceiling. And install the thermostat controls.
Then after we had been using it for less than a month one of the units stopped emitting cold air. Penn Home Services did come out and fix it, but it broke again in the spring of 2015. They came out again. Then they said we needed a new circuit board on the outside unit and it would take a week to get the part in. (Meanwhile it is starting to get very hot in our condo!) They came with the new circuit board, but it still isn't working. This time they said we need a new compressor. It will take about a week to get it in. (And now the temperature in the condo is getting to be in the upper 80's). The incompetence of this company is absolutely astounding. What they did well: the units look nice, and are installed neatly. When they re-plastered the holes in the ceiling they did a good job. (Although we still had to do the final sanding and the painting).
There are many more electrical & mechanical parts to a steam boiler than anyone would think there are, factoring in all the safety cutoff devices. We've had Pann come out in the early fall, annually, to do a preventative maintenance check, and each year, they've caught something that would've gotten worse had we not invested that paltry $300. One year, the water drain valves both needed to be replaced because they were stuck shut; another, the fan that expels carbon monoxide wasn't running, so the fumes wouldn't have been exhausted. This year, despite the green light at the fall PM, we had several other components fail, and it required a lot of process of elimination troubleshooting, and several re-visits to get them all fixed. We remain very happy with their service.
A few years ago, they replaced both our 75 gal gas hot water heaters in 1 day when 1 sprung a leak.
Our wooden porch was replaced some time in the 60's by a brick, cement, and wrought iron structure with slate stone stairs. The cement holding the stairs in place was crumbling away when we bought the house in 2007, and by 2010 the stairs were starting to rock. In addition, the front walk flooded in winter, forming a thick sheet of ice covered with water that we called "Lake Baikal".
Pann replaced the cement walk with pavers and rebuilt the stairs in the fall of 2011. The stairs are just fine.
I have waited until now to write a review about the walkway because the winter of 2011-2012 was so mild that I felt it wasn't a fair test of the work. This winter, 2012-2013, is a much better test.
I was dubious about putting in a porous walkway because I was afraid of frost heaves or the pavers moving under the stress of winter weather. It has probably been the best improvement we've made to the house in terms of comfort, convenience, and appearance. The drainage is excellent, and nothing has moved in two years. There's a little "puddling" spot where the walk joins the town-owned cement sidewalk, but that's because the sidewalk is broken and pushes the water back towards the walkway. Otherwise, and aside from a very few days this winter when melting/freezing snow from the large snowbanks made it inevitable, we have no issues with water or ice, ever. It is an unqualified success. And it's quite handsome, too!
Pann gave us a choice of pavers and price ranges, tore up the old walkway, built a bed of gravel and black sand, laid the pavers, and removed the rubble. They also completely rebuilt the stairs, even though their original estimate was that only two of the four steps needed replacing, without extra charge. They did underestimate the time required for the work, but that did not stop them from working straight through until the job was done.
I have given them a "B" for price, because their prices are high compared to the local average. But I am willing to pay them, both because of the excellent quality of their work and the longstanding nature of our relationship.
