The estimate from Chris was slightly higher than what some other providers quoted but we decided to go with him primarily because of the knowledge Chris had. He planned everything from what tools he will need and how he will approach during the estimation.
The only minor suggestion is to do a better scheduling. Chris confirmed me the date and time just about a day before he actually did the work but he did offer flexibility if I want a different day , even agreed to accept the payment a day later if I cannot be home ! I was available and so it worked perfect. Chris, his Son and two other gentlemen worked for over 4 hours to complete the work including pruning some additional branches per my request as well as chip another small tree which I had cut down myself earlier. All in all , a job well done and a happy customer.
He also removed some foliage that had been growing out of a chimney - for no extra fee.
The owner, Chris, did an estimate on 12/22/12 and told me he'd have the job done in a few weeks. After the first few weeks without hearing back from him, I called and he told me they were waiting on another job nearby and he would be out soon. A few more weeks went by - they were still waiting on a nearby job. Then the snow came, and we had to hunker down and wait it out. One of the reasons we had called him was because the top part of the tree was hanging off from storm damage. When the first of our winter storms was predicted, I was extremely worried that it was going to fall on my house. I called him, and when I pointed out that I was worried about the safety myself and my neighbors, he reluctantly agreed to come out that day and remove that part of the tree. To give him credit, he came out at 8:00 at night to get it trimmed before the storm hit. (I believe this was in January)
He then told me he'd "call me soon."
I never heard back. I assumed it was because it was too cold for them to work, and we'd hear back from them when the weather got warmer. When we still didn't hear back, I called in April and he told me he had lost my paperwork. He told me he'd be out within two weeks, and he'd call me to let me know when.
He called my house on 4/28/13 at 9:30 PM to let me know he'd be out the next day. At that point, there was no way I could get a day off, so I told him I'd be at work, but my father-in-law would be in the house and he could talk to him if there were any problems or questions. He didn't indicate that this would be a problem.
I got home while the trucks were still there. Apparently, Chris had just expected me to leave money for the job with my father-in-law. I don't know why he expected I would pay for a job before I inspected it, but if his expectation was cash on delivery, he should have made that clear when I told him I wouldn't be home. At any rate, he was rude to both my father-in-law, and then my wife as she was writing him a check!
Since they were still present when I got home, I confronted him about his behavior, at which point he lost it. He denied any rude behavior, told me all of his employees and his son would vouch for his good behavior, and that my wife was rude because she walked by him without talking to him when she went to meet my daughter from the bus. He then sent his son to look over the work with me, and the work was done well. His son told me that they had an expensive machine break down that day, they had to pull people off other jobs, etc...but the bottom line is, whatever your problems are, you don't take them out on the customer. His ranting and raving at me did nothing to convince me of his claim that he had been perfectly polite - a point which he didn't seem to grasp. Then he did one of the most childish things I have ever witnessed - he refused to take the check from my hand. He insisted I give it to his son, leave it on the truck, mail it to him, etc...
I should have just ripped it up, but he eventually took it from me.
It may have been a bad day, but it was 4 months of waiting, where he repeatedly rescheduled us, apparently forgot about the job he had contracted to do, and then yelled at my family. We will not be repeat customers.
The clean up was immaculate, they cleared all stray chips from the chipper and sawdust. They even suspended a man from the crane with a powerful leaf blower to clear all the pine needles that were on the garage. This gave the adjuster and roofing repairmen a clear view of the damage to the garage roof.
Very pleased with the promptness and professionalism in this very busy time for them. They completed the job in less time than another tree service could send a guy over just for an estimate!
All that being said, Middlesex Tree did a great job. They had the tree down in no time at all. At our request, they cut it into smaller pieces for firewood. They cleaned up thoroughly.
We would definitely use them again.
