I had concerns about the how the poor workmanship and choice of materials had caused the problems in the first place (not done by him). I have done some of my own carpentry work in the past, and knew that priming the ends of cut boards was a good way to prevent water from wicking in from the ends, and would make a board last longer. When I asked the other guys if they would do this, it was made out to be a really big deal. With Derek, it seemed like nothing new or unusual. Just something you do to make it last, not an "extra". He also spoke with authority about the different kinds of materials to use, with attention to what was appropriate to the character and period of the house.
Derek did great work that really enhanced the curb appeal and fixed the problems. He took apart the poorly done facade and put in corbels that were appropriate to the original design intent, after discovering paint patterns behind the the face that had been concealed. With the front door, he removed the entire assembly that we clearly a Home Depot special, and replaced it with a door from salvage that he restored stunningly, then build custom side lights to match. Before, the whole front of the house just didn't look right, and it looked cheap. Now it looks like it should for the neighborhood, and for the period it was designed.
Derek is very creative and he really acted like a partner in the whole process. I will hire him again.
