Louis K.
Oct 2011
In early March 2011 we called William Mack Painting Co. of Winthrop, MA in response to a direct mail solicitation advertising "$200.00 per room." William Mack came to look at the bedroom and immediately increased his price by 50% to $300.00. Because we have a 1928-built house, and his ad said "Historical restoration is our specialty," along with the fact that he lives in our town and seemed like a nice person who could use the work, we agreed to $300.00.
He came on the day he said he would and began to work. About an hour into painting the ceiling, the new paint began to peel off. William Mack seemed only then to understand that the ceiling was calcimine, which required a specialty paint called Cal-Cote. I had to go to the hardware store to buy the very expensive gallon of Cal-Cote. He tried to put that over the ceiling paint he had just applied, but the damage had been done. The paint continued to peel and fall from the ceiling.
Clearly flustered, William painted the walls and trim, and left after around 5:30 p.m. without finishing the ceiling.
Didn't respond to calls or letters to return. Finally came back 8 MONTHS later, only after threat of Small Claims action. Used correct paint. Ceiling looked fine for a month or two. Then blisters started to reappear. Ceiling will have to be done for a third time.
