At the first appointment, on 3/10/2011, Bob Madden seemed a likable young man and fairly competent. So much so that I signed a contract right away.
About 10 days later, on a cold wet day, he performed the cabling of one tree, and the pruning of the ornamentals.
Shortly afterward, I phoned him to get the results of the lab report and how to proceed with the sick tree; I also asked him to fax me the lab report. He said the report indicated that the tree would have to be removed, and the would also fax me the report. However, I never heard from him again -- no fax, no response -- even after numerous phone calls!!
I hope this report, more than anything, improves the professionalism of Bob Madden because I really thought he was a nice young man.
"My response to the member's report I responded to her phone call and set a day and time for me to meet with her at her home. At that time she stated that she wanted a few evergreens topped to keep from growing taller than the roof of the house, she also wanted an ornamental at the front pruned and a shrub pruned to fit the space at the front corner of her house. The shrub was noticeably sick so I suggested to her to send a twig to a lab for analysis and she agreed. In the back yard she had a rose of Sharon which had been split at the base into two pieces. The member stated that she really liked the shrub and wanted to keep it. I suggested that I could bolt the trunk together and lightly cut the tissue to encourage new growth and put a cable in the canopy for support. She agreed. And finally she wanted a rhododendron at the front pruned. I told her I could do what she asked, I gave her a price and she signed at that point. As is our policy I called the member the day before to state we would be at her house the next day, she agreed and we showed up. As luck would have it just as we started to work, a cold rain squall with sleet blew through, not too bad, so we stayed and worked through the squall and finished the job. While in her back yard I noticed an espaliered apple with training ties left on for far too long. I cut the old, tight ties and attached new ones where necessary. When we finished the job the member walked around to see the work and gave me a check. When I received the lab report I called the member and told her that the extent of infection in the shrub was severe and that the lab suggested the shrub be removed to prevent further infection to nearby plants. At this point the member became very indecisive. She wanted to keep the shrub, but the recommendation was for removal. She called me many times asking me what I thought, I told her that treating was too late, would end up costing more, and she would still lose the shrub. This went on for some time and eventually she stopped calling. I assumed she decided to keep the shrub or hired someone else to cut it down. She did not pay for the test or the postage to ship the sample so I let that off set the pruning of the small rhody. As for the price, $ 375 for two men to drive to her home spend just over two and a half hours and do the work, a " C " ? The member did leave a message maybe two weeks ago, I admit I forgot to call her back and here we are. For her to grade the performance of my company this way is a mystery. Myself and my crew work hard, not just for a check, but for reports. Many times customers state that they chose Madden Tree because of the high marks we receive on the various internet sites. We are not perfect, we have had call backs, but this is just off the charts."
