When tracking down and fixing the problems with the window and door detectors however, he seemed unable to find them or fix them. He kept changing his mind about what the problems were. After more than 45 minutes of this and spending ten minutes in his van fixing his tools, I finally asked him to explain his strategies. He talked of using inductance and capacitance to find a broken wire. I guess he thought I didn't understand how to troubleshoot basic electrical circuits. At this point, I asked him to simply use his ohm meter and then he "found" the problem in less than five minutes.
He reapplied a window breakage detector, but it fell off the next day.
When tracking down the windows problems, he then began talking of inductance again. He traced the problem to a specific wire in the basement. When he showed it to me, I pointed out that it was the wire for the dog's Invisible Fence system. After some questioning, he agreed it would be easier to find the problem by simply opening and closing the windows. We quickly found three contacts that needed replacing.
When he went to replace a contact in the window frame, it didn't fit. He didin't have the right tool (a round file) and then spent 20 minutes (at $125/hour) trying to get it to fit by chipping away at the frame. I finally told him to stop. The job remains unfinished.
A call to the main office brought an offer to take a half an hour off the bill. They would fix the remaining problems, but would charge me for second trip out to my home. I told them I would prefer a refund for the half hour and would fix the remaining problems myself. Ten days later, no refund has appeared in the mail.
