First off, they stopped being Service Experts in the spring of 2013 according to their office. They now go by Berkshire Heating and Air Conditioning. I?m not sure of exactly when that happing. I got a mix of ?Service Experts? and ?Berkshire Heating and Air Conditioning? paperwork.
I first started with Berkshire Heating and Cooling when they were part of Service Experts around April 26 of 2013. My central air condition unit would start and only run for about five minutes. I went to their web page and was able to schedule an appointment for the next day. The service tech came out, futzed around for about half an hour. His diagnosis was that the circuit breaker was tripped because of a faulty compressor that needed to be replaced at a cost of $2500.00 and gave me a bill for $99.00 (to be applied to the price of a new Air Conditioner if I so chose) and said he would have a salesman contact me. (They don?t call them ?salesmen.? It was something hoakie like ?Comfort Specialist.?)
The Salesman came to my house on May 2. He gave me a price on a regular AC unit, and I asked him about adding heat pumps. The cost was prohibitive, so I decided to go with a straight AC unit. It gets interesting here. I thought he told me $4,200 for the unit, he says he told me $5,600 or $5,800. It?s possible that I was wrong but I don?t think so. What I am positive about is asking about the flexible ductwork. I knew it needed to be replaced. It was twenty years old and pretty torn up. I almost replaced it the year before but never got around to it. He told me that it came with the unit. I knew from checking around before that less than $100.00 for 25 feet of it. I only needed about 12 feet so it seemed reasonable. Anyway we haggled the price down to $5,150 (installed) with two years of free spring tune-ups and made the deal. He gave me some Service Expert guarantees.
About a week later they came and installed the new AC unit. They work quickly and cleanly and cleaned up after themselves. I specifically asked them if they checked the existing wiring. They said they did. The next day the AC was doing the same thing that the old one did. I called and they had someone there the next day. This service tech found that the wire coming out of the circuit breaker for the AC had been loose and was burned pretty badly. Even he said that this is something that the installers should have caught. Soooo, that was probably the only thing wrong with the old Air Conditioner. I didn?t raise a stink then because I had been considering replacing the AC anyway to get a more efficient one. The new one is a Lenox, so I?m happy with that. My electric bill this summer was down. I guess I?ll just have to wait and see about the two free tune-ups.
I started it up this spring and it was only blowing a tiny bit. I called for the spring tune-up and they came within the week. The tech open up the unit and there was a solid block of ice in it. He said there could be a lot of reasons for that, but would have to wait for the ice to melt to diagnose it. The next day another tech came out and started working on he unit. He checked out a few things and glued back some insulation that was loose (from the manufacturer) in a few places, then started the unit up. He immediately knew something was wrong by the sound of the blower. He opened another section to check the airflow. Next to nothing. He opened the skirting on the home and crawled underneath. They had never change the flexible duct and it was broken and collapsed. He told me he would report the situation and closed up the unit.
When I talked to the office they told me that they would replace the flexible ducts, for EIGHT HUNDRED AND TENTY FIVE DOLLARS. When I told them that the salesman said it was included with the unit, he said they never do that and quite rudely told me that they ?would not give [me] the ductwork.? Of course the salesman also says he never said that.
One of the guarantees that they gave me was a three year Service Experts Satisfaction Guarantee. They would make it right or remove the equipment and refund all the money. I asked him about that. He told me they were no longer Service Experts and that I would have to get a hold of them about that and hung up. No information about how to get a hold of Service Experts.
Now if I can ever get a hold of Service Experts, I?ll see what happens.
BTW I called another company for a price in case Service Experts did pull the unit. He told me he just put in a similar unit in my park, INCLUDING the flexible duct from scratch for about $3,500.
