We had a 1950's home with very traditional first floor - separate dining room, kitchen, living room and family room.  we wanted to open the space into 2 rooms and make it a much more social area with better flow.  met DK at their free kitchen seminar to do some research.  we really like Mariette so decided to have a free counseling at our house.  she came with one of the designers and had some good ideas.  after 3 or 4 months of design and discussions we started our work - knocked down two walls (one supporting) and installed central a/c as part of the job.  they provided excellent ideas for the modern design we were after, not easy in a mid 20th century home.  Other than the high quality of the construction, ask for Tim he is fantastic, their responsiveness and incorporation of our thoughts/ideas were far above my experience with other contractors.  they were excellent by either email or phone and i never had to wait more than 24 hours, most often less than 1 hour, to hear back from them.  Jodi was our designer and she was great in assisting in many aspects of the job, including things like furniture placement and hardware.  she did a ton of research for us in finding sinks, hardware, outlet covers, etc where we gave her ideas of what we wanted.  never did we feel pressured/rushed to come to a decision.  they were straight forward with us throughout the process, often offering up issues that I didn't want to hear.  however, it's this insight that allowed me to make informed decisions about how to rectify potential issues instead of ignoring them and hoping they'd simply go away.
DK also coordinated with my audio/visual contractor that was done outside the scope of the contract.  DK coordinated directly with the A/V group and did a great job designing with this in mind.
i'd say the job was probably a bit more than they were ready for, in terms of organizing sub-contractors and dealing with various buidling permits.  we had some delays, all jobs have them, so they weren't totally unexpected.  but a few of them i felt were directly the result of not anticipating requirements by the town/sub contractors.  however, in each case DK was on top of the issue and did what was necessary to resolve the issue.  in a few cases, they even "ate" a portion of costs.  kudos to them for not taking shortcuts despite me voicing my concern (total construction was approximately 5 months, which we lived through in our house).  it was key to have a single contact point for all aspects of the job.  as both us work, it was a huge benefit to have a design-to-build firm handle the construction.
