We've been using American Appliance for years, and I get a good feeling on top of the distress when something breaks because I know I'll be dealing with this company. In this particular situation the repairman spent a half hour attempting to twist the door back into position and concluded that he couldn't. He explained that in these situations (he sees about 2 a year) you don't know if a part replacement will solve the problem until you've done it. He gave us the price for replacing the hinges and explained that if that didn't work the next part replacement would be more expensive, but he would only charge us for the part if it didn't work, not the labor, because it's such an uncertain thing. I appreciated the thorough explanations. He only charged us the flat rate for a diagnostic visit.
I've never felt pressured by this company to choose one or another option. The repair people have always been intelligent and able to explain the situations. They're willing to wave charges for this or that. I highly recommend them.
Initial appointment made for Thurs 8/13 8am-12, but I had to reschedule to Mon 8/17 12-4pm. Got a call from service technician on 8/13 double-checking on time that day - I think they showed up and no one was home. Clearly a disconnect in their scheduling system (which seems to be just a scribbled notation on the service request/receipt form).
Fridge was leaking inside (from auto-defroster). Service technician removed and cleaned out drain plug and drain line. He used one of our available dish towels to clean up leaked water without asking (we would have provided an alternate towel if he'd asked).
Water did indeed stop leaking inside fridge, but continued to leak from under the fridge.
Called them back on 9/1, guy reappeared promptly next morning. He said he had not properly reconnected the lower end fitting on the auto-defrost drain pipe, so water was leaking onto the floor instead of into the evaporator pan where it belonged. Five minute visit, no charge (warranty on previous service call I guess).
So net, they finally got it right (well, we'll see after a day or two!). But between the scheduling confusion, incomplete initial repair, use of our towel without asking and having to have a second service visit to finally fix the problem, I'm less than enthused. At least there was no discussion of any charge for the second visit.
American Appliance has done reasonably well by us in the past, so I will use them again, albeit a bit warily.
The only thing that could have been better is the information from the person on the telephone in the office prior to the visits. On the first visit, I told her we had multiple appliances but she failed to mention that the cost of the first appliance would be $79 and each additional appliance would be $40. The technician, therefore, did not charge the extra $40. One the second visit, I told her that we had a microwave to install in addition to the originally scheduled work. She didn't ask if it was a new installation or replacement. It turns out that they only do replacements of over-the-stove microwaves, not new installations. So now I still need to find someone to install the second microwave.
I called on Friday afternoon to price the replacement of a broken door switch on our gas dryer. They were willing to look up the part and give me an approximate price for the switch over the phone. I was able to schedule the initial appointment for the next day, Saturday. When I called the person answering the phone said that they didn't have the part in stock. However, I needed to schedule the diagnosis so they could order the proper part.
When the technician arrived, he quickly confirmed my diagnosis that the problem was the door switch. He said that he would look to see if they had the switch, and if they did he would be back that day. Otherwise, we agreed for him to return the following Thursday. The technician returned Thursday, and quickly replaced the switch. There was no additional charge for the return visit.
While American Appliance doesn't offer an Angie List discount, they do have one for Seniors.
I would definitely use American Appliance for future large appliance repairs.
I did call someone with experience, who took about 2 minutes to realize that the dishwasher wasn't connect to the power properly, corrected that, and everything runs fine now.
I called American Appliance to ask for my money back, since I had spent more than 3 hours of my time with Bill, and spent $236 on top of the cost of the dishwasher AND what I had to pay the second repair person. American Appliance only refunded half of what I paid, since they said there was 'no way to tell' if what I was saying was true.
Here is the quote in an email from the person who did successful install my dishwasher:
and quot;The bosch dishwasher was never connected to the power and the breaker was tripped. We flipped the circuit breaker and hooked up power and it started right up. Whoever you hired to install it doesn't seem like they did their job. Not sure if the charged you but if so I would get a refund.and quot;
End of story.
