I quoted out multiple companies before ultimately deciding to hire O'Brien. Excellent work done by John and his crew. There were two challenges with the existing driveway of the home my wife and I purchased- an extreme incline from the driveway to the street which would have most sedans bottom out and also the crushed stone by the garage causing pooling of water after storms. Rather than charging extra money to install a french drain, John assured me during the quote that there would be no more water. Sure enough, after the completion of the driveway a torrential rainstorm came through and not a drop entered the garage nor pooled up. Incredible work, can't thank them enough.

Our contractor hired this company out for our project last fall. Due to weather they could not finish the project. We were suppose to be first in line this spring but they have yet to show up. They've cancelled on us several times claiming they've had flat tires. They were already paid for most of this project.

The work that was done was by hand, when a machine would have been better. I began the process of hiring this contractor to pave my driveway in September 2016. After nearly 100 emails back and forth, many delays due to weather and equipment failures and contractor's health, we finally got the job started on Oct. 4, 2017. The contractor said that he ended up doing our driveway by hand and had to do it over three times. He told my wife that he could not get the machine into the driveway. Then he stated that he did not install the drain as proposed in the original estimate. He said that he was able to direct the water away from the house by pitching the driveway a certain direction. I questioned this as upon looking at it by eye, it was blatantly clear that the water would go into the garage. Upon the first rain storm we had water in the garage. When contacted on Oct. 14, 2017: "Also, I am concerned about the pitch of the driveway from the turnaround heading back to the garage. The slope is down towards the garage. I used my level because it looked strange. I feel that it is heading the wrong way. I asked a friend to come by and take some measurements using his equipment, and there are parts that are flat and even one part in the middle by the lamp post that is higher. I am concerned about the water run off. We should have a storm tomorrow, so hopefully we will get a better picture. When you come by to get the materials, could you please take a look at the markings on the driveway. I measured almost every six feet. The grade is either flat or only a difference of a few tenths. Can you please let me know when we can talk and you can help me understand? Maybe you can come by and take some measurements to see if I was off? My last question is about the top layer. To me it looks like there is a quite a big amount of "binder" at the top of the driveway. The paperwork that you gave me says that you do a binder and then finish asphalt. I would like to understand why it doesn't have the smooth finish that I would have thought it would have." On November 15, 2017 I sent him pictures and concerns about water now entering the garage as a result of the wrong pitch of the driveway. The contractor said the this was the most difficult driveway that he had ever done, but promised a solution. He then returned the first week of December 2016 and installed a drain in front of the garage and by the side of the driveway. We continued to have low spots, which he said he would fix by "hand and eye". This did not happen before the cold weather hit. When he installed the trench he had to cut the existing driveway, which has left a crack between the old and new section for water to penetrate and eventually break up the driveway in front of the trench drain. As the driveway was done by hand, pieces of the asphalt continue to crumble. The new trench drain was filled with asphalt pieces and never cleaned out before putting the grates over the top. On December 28, 2016 he stated: "Hi Brad I hope you guys had a great holiday. As you know all me vendors are closed for the next 3 weeks and still then it will be to cold to fix those puddles. Anyway you could pay at least 50% for now and in the spring time I'll fix the areas ASAP. I'd really appreciate. Thank you. On January 17, 2017 the contractor stated: "Hey Brad your correct. I appreciate it and I'll see you in the spring time. I usually start up April 1st. Thank you " On January 19, 2017 I sent him a check for 50% of the cost. It is now May 7, 2017 and the contractor has not called, emailed or returned. I have every belief that he will not return. I still have puddles forming in the driveway. The two drains he installed back up with water each time that it rains, I have water coming into the garage and the trench in front of the garage is sinking because it was placed into the dirt and not concrete. I have contacted other driveway professionals and they have stated that the driveway needs to be ripped out and re-done. The drain work needs to be moved into better location, the trench in front of the garage needs to be placed into a cement foundation, and a solution needs to be found for improper draining into the dry well. I am looking for the contractor to refund my 50% that I paid him, so that I can have someone else fix his failed attempt to do the job contracted.

John was great to work with. He and his crew were competent, hard working, fast and neat. The finished driveway looks great. This is a belated review ( thought I entered this after work was done) so now in 2017 it still looks great with no issues.

I had John to come out to our home do an estimate on having a driveway extension from single car to a 2 car space (our current driveway is 11’ wide so we wanted to add another 9’. At first he missed the estimate date but contacted me after and showed up the following week or so. E-mail seems the best way to reach John. He was very professional and his price was reasonable so we decided to go with them. We also had them do our driveway probably 4-5 years ago and liked the job they did then so we wanted to consider them for doing an extension as well.

Like some other people have mentioned on here, they aren't always easy to get in touch with, so I can understand the frustrations some have faced. I wanted them to have the job so I made sure to follow up often. The first appointment they had to reschedule since the crew was running behind due to rain a couple days earlier. They showed up the following Monday to do the work. His brother Brian and crew showed up, very nice and professional.  He mentioned remembering doing the driveway years back. They do have a big crew and they got to work immediately after meeting with him.

The work came out good, we’re very excited to now be able to have extra parking instead of parking in the mud. The job took them a few hours, they work fast! The only thing I noticed was that they never did the rounded edge at the end of the driveway like me and John talked about. Probably something I should have mentioned to his brother when he showed up but assumed he knew, not a big deal, is this an easy fix John? I’m also wondering the best approach to “blend” my existing driveway in with the new driveway extension. Overall I would hire them again, thank you O’Brien paving!

John and his crew where very professional. They suggested a few design changes for the driveway. They did my drivewayand play court.  Once on the job they where there everyday to complete it.  Very happy with the work and his crew.

We are very happy with our new driveway.  I met with John about six weeks ago to go over the job (our initial meeting was last year, but we delayed work until this year, and needed to meet again to discuss a few changes).  John scheduled a date to pave the driveway, but when the date came he was running behind due to rain/bad weather.  His crew came over to rip up the driveway and his brother Brian led the job.  The crew worked all day on a Saturday and returned the following Monday to complete the job--they worked very hard and finished everything the same day--we could not be happier with the new driveway and are grateful to Brian for all his hard work and diligence.

I was left feeling mostly satisfied with O'Brien, but not 100%. John was prompt in offering an estimate, which was very reasonable. He then called that evening to say a job had cancelled for the next morning and offered a discount on the quote if we would get it done then. His brother showed up on time with an impressively large crew and finished the driveway in one day. They cleaned up OK, but I found about 10-15 chunks of the old driveway in our flower beds and behind the garage.
The new driveway is a huge improvement. But over the winter the driveway puddled in a couple of areas, including by the back gate. That resulted in big icy spots. The puddling has diminished in warmer weather. They also built up the driveway to get the right angle to direct the runoff away from the house, but the built-up area was so high that our old wooden fence posts were stuck in the asphalt. I wasn't told that was going to happen and left a message for John to ask about it. I never heard back.
I might use them again, but I'd be a bit more vigilant about supervising the job and asking about details like the fence ahead of time.

Response from O'Brien Paving Inc
"the member did call asking about the height of the driveway. There was no other way to divert the water away from the house. I did stop over and look to see if there where any other problems. I did follow up with a call to the member but as I know now he didn't receive it. I've done 4 other driveways on his street since his install. I wish they approached me again. I always do my best to make things right. Thank you very much."

This team led by John and his brother were like a well-oiled machine. We anticipated a full weekend but they arrived early bought all the machinery and truck loads of materials, busted up the drive and laid the new asphalt all by midday. It was a perfect job all the old concrete and asphalt was removed, drive and road swept clean. Five months later it looks as good as new.

O'Brien Paving was responsive, prompt and professional. They did a great job. We have some drainage pipes under our driveway and they were very careful not to disturb them. The slope of the driveway was corrected so that water drains down the road instead of toward out house. All debris was cleaned up and my adjacent garden was in good condition. We are very happy with the results.
