Jason was keen to show me how he did the job well and pointed out the attention to detail he took where I might not have noticed what was in fact a very nice job indeed. I felt so small because not only is he physically taller than me, but I was so embarrassed about the massive pile of junk I fobbed off on him! But wait; there's more—the cast iron pipe that carries our sewage out to the city line had completely corroded through—imagine an iron pipe roughly the length of a man's height with a radius of two or three inches. turned almost entirely to rust, casting foils out from itself, but along the *entire* length of this big cast iron pipe was a gap of greater than an inch! Basically all our sewage was flowing through a partial pipe completed by the soil encasing it. There has long been a miasma in the place but because of a street-wide problem a few years ago, I did not realize there were structural problems with the pipe. So Jason had no choice to replace it then and there.
Fortunately for both of us, I was tired sore from moving stuff and slept late the second morning. He sent me an e-mail apprising me of the situation, which was cool because I indicated to him that it was the best way to get in touch with me.
One other example of professionalism I must include—the first time he called me down to watch his progress (the job took two days), the two brick planters which flank our basement door had been used as places to put their heavy toolboxes, despite the planters having been very obviously planted with not only flowers but herbs that we eat. I was angry about it but also feeling very sheepish about the junk pile i left him, so I pointed it out to Jason in a way that I hope was polite. I am sure I whined a little too much. I am not a whiner but I was really mad about the plants. Well, they were very careful around them after that. It is the kind of professionalism that is so professional that it makes one almost embarrassed to ask them to maintain a high standard.
While we have not even had the floor poured and the real proof of their work will be to live with it for a few seasons, I can recommend Jason based on his professionalism, courtesy, and good communication. His team was also nice for a person with sensitive ears. To have a crew of contractors in one's house and having the most abrasive sound being the jackhammer is beautiful indeed.
Of all the contractors I spoke with (4), Jason struck me as the most genuine—beyond that, he communicated in a way that was easier to understand than the others, so that gave me much more confidence that I understood what he was proposing and how it would address our problems.
One of the requirements when having a French drain installed is that that all materials against the walls need to be cleared away. Jason included in his price the labor of moving all of the heavy appliances (washer and dryer) and a massive workbench that was attached to the wall and riveted to the floor. He also took out a wall-attached heating system. Other contractors told me it would be up to me to move all of these things or to hire someone else to do it before they came. In spite of this, Drycrete’s pricing was very competitive.
The basement waterproofing done by Drycrete came after we had just installed a new patio and driveway, so we were concerned that his people be careful not to damage anything while doing their work. We were not disappointed—everything was in the same clean state it had been before he started.
I would strongly recommend Jason and Drycrete based on the work they did at our home. Of course it is too soon to tell whether our water problems have been solved since the system has only been in place for a couple of weeks and no heavy rainstorms have occurred yet. But I feel confident that I can reach out to Jason anytime and that he will stand behind his product. I plan to post an update after a year or so to let others know how well the drainage system functions.
We met with a couple of different vendors, but Jason was the most helpful. he explained that because of our foundation, unless we were going to dig around the entire footprint of the house, and waterproof from the outside, that there wasn't another way to completely waterproof it.
What we COULD do, was put up these super thick barriers to guide water down to the floor into a french drain system that went around the entirety of the basement. This would prevent any insulation from getting wet/moldy and would ensure that we wouldn't have any future flooding.
We scheduled the project about 2 weeks out, because it was in the middle of the winter, but he had a cancellation and we were able to bump it up 10 days sooner.
Jason's team was in and out in 2 days, and in addition to this project, they also cut into the floor in the area where we would need to access the drain pipes for a bathroom to save our plumber some extra work. AND he left some extra material behind in case we wanted to put more tape on, or if we needed to add more of the barrier to a section of the basement where we aren't going to be finishing it out.
A few months after he came out, we thought there was an issue with part of the barrier (we thought it ripped, it didn't). He came out pretty quickly to take a peek and to give us a piece of mind. There wasn't anything wrong with the system, but it was good to know that Jason was accessible after the project ended to stand by his work. We've worked with a lot of vendors lately and not all of them have as much accountability as Jason does.
Jason really went above and beyond for our project, and we genuinely enjoyed working with him. I'd say we'd use him again, but if it works we hopefully won't have to address the problem again. But I would 100% recommend him to anyone.
In short, these guys were awesome. I wish Jason was a general contractor. I would hire him for every job I needed done. He's got a level of honesty, integrity, and professionalism you don't see much these days.
Jason was very responsive and willing to answer all of my questions. It was obvious he knew what he was talking about. I got a few other estimates, but Drycrete was the best value and I liked the details of the proposed work. I hired Drycrete to install a French drain system and I also paid them to do the demo work of tearing out all of the water-damaged walls in my basement. I also asked Jason if he would tear out an interior wall that I would otherwise have to do myself. Jason said no problem, and even though that interior wall turned out to be a nightmare to remove, Jason stuck to his word... and his original estimate.
I think what I liked most of all was that when Jason and his crew came across something they didn't like (an old cast iron p-trap on the main soil stack, un-capped drain pipes from an old sink/washer, a flimsy sump pit liner that had the bottom cut out, a sump pump discharge pipe that was unsecured and routed out a window, etc.) they didn't just cover it up or move on; they took care of it themselves or came and got me so that I could call out a plumber or electrician.
I would not hesitate to hire this company again or to recommend them to anyone with a water problem.
They installed a french drain and sump pump system in our old house before we finished the basement. DryCrete was in and out in one day and we never had a water problem again. Before that we would get 2-3 inches of standing water! When we sold the home the DryCrete system became an important selling feature, the home inspector was quite impressed and raved about it to the new buyer.
Our new house needed the same system and we didn't consider using anyone else. Jason and his crew spent 2 days and removed 13 tons of material using 5 gallon buckets! They installed about 150 linear feet of pipe and even fixed a leaking crack in the foundation. We can hear the pump kick on after heavy rain and the basement is dry! It's tough to spend the money on something you never really see but it's well worth the peace of mind. I should also mention it's a messy job but they did a great job cleaning up and stopping dust from getting into the living areas of our home. If you're in the market for a sump pump and french drain, definitely check these guys out.
Jason came by the house looking around the basement and after 15 minutes was able to give a quote on the spot.
Before any work was to be done, Jason met with me on the first day before starting to rehash what would be done and agreed upon that in writing, talked about progress halfway through and confirm at the end everything was done to what we agreed upon and be sure I was satisfied.
Jason and his guys did an amazingly thorough job, I offered to Jason that he can me as a reference for anyone nearby especially my neighbors here -- a lot of these people have the same basement issues I did.
Thanks Jason, great work.
-Keith
The job was done excellently, and he and his crew cleaned up very well. There has not been any water leaking through the repaired cracks. There has been a fair amount of heavy rainy days in the last month since the work was done, and no water in the basement!
My husband and I were both extremely pleased with Jason and DryCrete. We would definitely recommend DryCrete.
