The first project was a bit bigger, and required some wrangling with MassSave. They worked with me through the process, helped with the rebate, and gave me instructions on the process I had to follow (I needed a gas line brought to the house). Everything went well and smooth.
If I have any complaint is they are a bit overly utilitarian and will sometimes locate something because it's easier. I had to struggle to get the gasline where I wanted it (so it would be hidden from the street), and then they put the little "Active Vent" sign on our house a bit crookedly. Minor things and I'm sure if you explain what you want you'll get it.
The challenge we found was most HVAC people won't do pipe work (plumber needed) and most plumbers won't touch forced hot air. Maybe just our experience but that was what we faced. I didn't want to have to work with 2 separate entities (on top of the utilities).
So UM handles both no problem. They showed up on time, were efficient, provided solid quotes, and were very responsive over email (a HUGE plus in my mind). Working with National Grid was a huge pain, and actually getting our rebate from MassSave was a nightmare, BUT Rich helped guide us perfectly.
Cost listed above was total cost, including getting the gas hooked up to our house and buying a fairly top end furnace.
We've been thrilled. The new furnace has twice the heating power of our old oil furnace and we are saving so much money (75% efficient oil to 96% efficient gas will do that).
About to reach out to them to handle the switch for hot water now as well.
The guys at Unified were extremely courteous, doing their best not to intrude when they arrived in the morning. They used drop cloths whenever they began work, and a vacuum followed them throughout the house. I expected a huge mess when they left everyday but I was pleasantly surprised at how clean they left the house. Oh, and they put up with our little yappy dog as well. Despite the ankle biting early in the process, by the end of their work, the dog was climbing up their legs. I am only partially joking, as it?s nice to be able to leave the house all day with an animal at home and not have to worry about it escaping or freaking out.
We are excited that the work is now complete and our heat is working beyond expectations. I?d encourage anyone to use Unified Mechanical to take care of their heating and cooling systems or any other plumbing needs. I know that when I have any other work around the house, I?ll call them. Oh, and I should mention that they use a calling service, which is awesome, because someone nice answers any time of day. And they actually call back!
I found this company from Angies list. Since I saw this company has 100% customer satisfaction rate, I wanted to be one of them.
I collected more than 4 quotes and did some on-line searching / self-training for good practice of replacing the system.
After talking to the companies and saw how they did their estimates when they came to my apt, I decided to choose this company even though their quote is about $ 1700 higher than the lowest quote I got.
They are professional, very knowledgeable about the industry / systems and did measurement of my unit ( to decide exactly what kind of system I should have for my home). They explained why and gave me his suggestions. All my questions and concerns were answered on time and to the point. Since I did some home work, I believe the answers from the owner ( Rich) were honest and correct. Their quote is competitive to the similar companies, not serious over-priced I believe. There is no sale's push and no hidden charge. Then the service was delivered in good quality, on time as promised.
The new system ( Bryan ) has been using works fine so far. Happy with the AC this summer. I will test how good heating function is soon. A good company to work with. Recommend.
I would give them A+++ on EVERYTHING and would nominate for the Page of Happiness!
Responsiveness: Because the project was complex, we had to work through options. We initially intended to stick with steam until an old condensate pipe failed, sealing the deal for forced hot water. After talking with more than 10 contractors, Sal was the most responsive. And he had no problems coming back for another estimate when we decided to move from steam to forced hot water. When our steam system failed while waiting for the installation, Sal even provided temporary heaters to hold us over until the December project date.
Expertise: This was a complex project, and I got to see all kinds of knowledge. Many plumbers encouraged me to simplify or go even bigger rather than this tough conversion. Sal was one of the few willing to take it on. He also seemed to have the best grasp on current technology, such as options for converting old steam radiators and making it easy to run new tubing lines. His recommendation for local source of rehabbed cast iron radiators worked out well too.
Communication: There was a fair amount of preparation for this project. Sal helped me determine which radiators needed to be changed out. The ordering process for refurbished radiators required input from Sal. Despite his busy schedule we were able to work through plans over the phone and with email. Even after he got the job, he was always prompt to reply.
On The Job: The project took four long days. Sal, Rich and Victor were outstanding. I couldn't be happier with their effort, quality, workmanship, communication, diligence and ownership that they took in the job. Our old house had several surprises. While working very hard, they would each take time to explain challenges they were facing or decisions they were making. They'd give us options to think through over night about where to run new tubing. They'd make time to talk with our children.
1st Winter Assessment: Wow! We are very happy with our decisions. Savings (oil to gas + steam to forced hot water + electric to gas water heater) are 60% versus two winters ago and 40% versus last winter. System ran great all winter. The one time I needed assistance, I called their service number and Sal responded directly.
Finally, this time we called Unified Mechanical. They had a state-of-the art boiler and tank solution for us. They were courteous and did a great job. Heating system is quiet and efficient. Glad to finally have a reliable heating system we don't have to worry will break every few years and leave us with no heat or hot water for weeks. And I know if something does go wrong, Unified can come out and fix it ASAP with minimal downtime.
Very friendly but stayed on what he had to do.
Checked out both outside units and inside ducts.
Cleaned return ducts.
Check out door pipes.
Filled in the wood around a flow pipe to the outdoors.
I priced out about 6 different plumbers for the job and these guys were in the middle on pricing so, while they weren't the cheapest, the value for money was excellent.
