Kitchen and Bathroom Remodel
BY ALL ACCOUNTS, THE WORK WAS EXPECTED TO TAKE ABOUT TWO MONTHS. AFTER 6 MONTHS OF INTERMITTENT WORK, WE DECLARED THE JOB 'FINISHED'. ALTHOUGH OVERALL THE QUALITY OF WORK WAS ACCEPTABLE, THERE WERE STRIKING LAPSES IN ATTENTION TO THE QUALITY OF WORK. LITTLE WAS DONE TO CONTAIN THE MESS (NO DRAPES OVER CARPET IN ENTRYWAY, NOTHING TO CONTAIN SAWDUST FROM FLOOR SANDING). OFTEN, DECISIONS MADE IN MEETINGS WERE FORGOTTEN OR NOT COMMUNICATED TO THE INDIVIDUALS DOING THE WORK. PHONE CALLS AND E-MAIL WENT UNANSWERED, AND THE CONTRACTOR RARELY CAME TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON. IN THE END, WE HAD OTHER PEOPLE RE-DO WIRING, REPAIR LEAKS, REFINISH FLOOR, ETC.

THIS JOB SHOULD HAVE TAKEN A WEEK. IT STRETCHED ON FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS AND WAS COMPLETED LONG AFTER THE TIME SPECIFIED IN THE CONTRACT. MY CONCERNS ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE WORK (CRACKS IN THE SUPPORT BEAMS) WERE MOSTLY IGNORED AND NONE OF MY PHONE CALLS WERE ANSWERED.
