Tom replaced the well-head and installed new wiring and even had my water tested. He was efficient, focussed and delivered. He is the consumate professional. Getting the job right is more important than anything else. I was very impressed. I taped his card to my water tank.
It was no surprise that he was the first person I called when I saw air in all my water supply and saw that my water pressure was dropping. I researched possible causes and could not figure this one out. Tom accurately diagnosed the problem as a line break from my well to my house. He needed to dig through the concrete floor, dig out gravel and concrete, cut out the leaking pipe and replace it. He improved on the way the pipe feed into the basement was routed. He even fixed a leaking pressure value. He improved on everything he touched. He exceeded my expectations. Back to a working water supply !!! From the time he set foot on my property until the time he left, he was focussed on the leak. A wrong diagnosis would have cost me thousands in new pumps, well castings, etc. and left me with the same problem.
Tom is an expert in what he does. He is Phi Beta Kappa on wells. He is upbeat, positive, efficient and skilled. He did a great job (again) and I would recommend him without reservation.
Even if I were not 25 years older, i would not have attempted to fix this myself again. Instead, my wife and I turned to Angie's list. st. We selected Reliable Well and Pump, since they were local and had many good reviews. My wife made the initial call. She spoke with Tom, the owner / operator, who was pleasant and reassuring to deal with on the phone. He offered to come by the next day to size up the job, saying that he would call between 9 and 10 to let us know when he would be arriving.
Tom called the next mormng at 9:30, and said that he would be by about 11 am to look at the problem. He informed me that there had been a delay in a job that he had scheduled for that afternoon, and a backhoe would be available, should we choose to do any digging that day.
Tom arrived at 10 past 11. We went out and inspected the well head. I described the wells history, and he said it was clear that it had broken again in the same area. I agreed, and asked him when he could do the work. He said that he would have it done the same day.
He left, and returned with the backhoe in about an hour. It was a compact unit on caterpillar treads, so it did very little damage to the lawn. even though the ground was soft. He said that he would have it dug out in about an hour. An hour later, we were looking at the pipe that had split right next to the coupling that I had replaced all those years ago.
Tom pointed out how tree roots had infiltrated around the pipe, indicating that it had begun leaking quite some time ago. He installed a new coupling and spliced the broken pipe. There were no leaks when we restored power to the pump. He had the hole filled in and the area graded about half an hour later. Total elapsed time, about 4 hours, including the hour it took to fetch the backhoe.
The price was reasonable, I felt, particularly given the fast service.
When we were inspecting thewell head just after he arrived, I asked Tom if there was any advantage to considering replacing the well pump at the same time as doing the repair, since it was about 40 years old. He agreed that that was elderly indeed for this type of pump, and that he could do so if we chose, but that there was no particular advantage to doing it at the same time. Further, he said that there was no real reason to replace it before it failed if it were functioning acceptably, since he could have a new pump installed within 24 hours of being called (he offers 24 hour emergency service). I give Tom high marks for being so forthcoming, when he could as easily have had the extra business right away. When the time finally does comes to replace the pump, we will definitely be calling Tom.
He was able to diagnose the problem very quickly and it ended up being a very inexpensive fix. I would have never known how to address it without his help. We have now requested him to service our well and irrigation system moving forward and will no longer use the company we originally worked with. Thank you Tom!
After struggling to get any response from some well drilling companies, or detailed estimates from others, Reliable Well and Pump was a breath of fresh air. As soon as I spoke to Tom on the telephone, I could tell this was someone who was professional and who would provide me with the information I needed to embark on this project. Tom initially told me on the telephone that the well could cost anywhere upwards of $8,000. After failing to scare me off with this quick estimate, he visited my property and we discussed the well drilling/installation process in detail, the drilling site and location for the pump controls and tank.
I got a detailed, written estimate very quickly by email and decided to go ahead with the work. Drilling went twice as deep as anticipated (625'), but every home could be different - less or more. However, I knew the cost of every additional 100' that had to be drilled on top of the original estimate, so there were no surprises. There was less mess created by the drilling than I expected too, despite the drilling rig being parked on my front lawn for several days. I didn't find the noise of the drilling particularly loud either. Tom subcontracts the drilling to a company he's used for a very long time, and the driller (Paul) and his co-worker were very professional, arrived on time, and answered any questions I had.
Once drilling was complete, Tom installed the pump and dug a trench to the house for pipes and electric cables so that the pump controls and tank could be installed in our basement. Although the well is only for irrigation purposes at present, everything has been installed such that, if we ever wanted to use the well for house water, we could do that without further digging outside. Tom also installed two spigots off the irrigation system, so that I can run a hose using well water to the front of the house and the same at the back of the house - great for watering plants in containers! There is more pressure from the well water than what we used to get from the town supply.
I paid Tom to restore the ground that had been dug-up from drilling. You have the option of using your landscaping company if you prefer. The ground has been filled with loam and re-graded by Tom. I've dealt with spreading grass seed (my choice) and now I'm just waiting for the grass to grow! The well has a flat cover, just like irrigation junction boxes in your lawn, so it's not even visible from the street.
I'm extremely happy with the work Tom has done. He works incredibly hard, often at weekends, to complete jobs as soon as possible. He is friendly, professional and unfailingly polite. If you are interested in this type of project, go into it with eyes open in terms of potential costs and put up with a bit of noise and an area of dug-up lawn for a few weeks. I would have no hesitation in recommending Reliable Well and Pump / Tom for well drilling/installation and repairs.
Tom from Reliable Well and Pump did an excellent job in correcting excessive arsenic levels in my well water. Upon calling, Tom quickly responded and proceeded to tell me about a particular filtration system that would remedy the arsenic issue.. Tom explained my options in detail while also listening to and addressing my concerns. He answered all my calls and/or e-mails and provided me in advance information detailing the specific filter system that he would install. He arrived as scheduled, installed the system in a few hours and charged me the same price as his estimate. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest I would rate reliable well and a 10+. I will definitely call Reliable Well and Pump for any future well issues.
