James was very professional to deal with and got the job done as expected. They did a very good job cleaning up. Only problem was getting the dumpster picked up -- we were stuck with it over a long holiday weekend.

Their crew was outstanding... 3 straight long days working non-stop fixing the rakes, cutting shingles, replacing flashing. Crew started promptly each morning and worked long hard days in cold Fall weather. Great work!

Contractor identified the issue with our roof - a section that was too flat had a shingle roof, then recommended the fix (putting in a rubber roof) and completed the work quickly and on budget. 3 years later and we have not had any problems with the new roof.

I consider myself lucky to have met Mr. James O?Connell, the owner of O?Connell Roofing. Our house has pitched roofs at the center, with deep roof valleys underneath them. There are also two dormer windows with semi-circular tops. They easily created severe ice dam problems in the winter. Even though our house is only 7 years old, it has formed ice dam water marks on the 2nd floor ceiling 3 times out of its past 7 winters. Last February, one part of our house was flooded after a severe snow storm. The water gushed into our house and leaked all the way to the basement. When the spring came, we had a roof guy come. He told us that we needed a completely new roof. I didn?t think that would solve the problem, considering the fact that our roof was only 7-year old. Then, Mr. O?Connell came along. He analyzed the angles of the roofs and determined that the top of the dormer windows was too flat for shingle roofs. So, he suggested placing rubber roofs underneath the shingles. His team also placed water shields all the way to the roof ridge and between the roof valley and the dormer window, where the major leak occurred last winter. They also fixed other problems, such as misplaced flashing on both sides of the 2 dormer windows, and rotten trims underneath the roof valley.
The job was done beautifully. The shingles were lined up so well that I could not tell an extra layer of rubber roof and water shields were
underneath them. Mr. O?Connell also made sure that the color of the new section matched the old roofs. When the job was done, it looked like a piece of art. We were extremely pleased with its quality. With all their work, the total price came out less than what I would spend on a brand new but probably useless roof work the other roofer suggested. Most of all, I feel better prepared for this coming winter.

He was great. He was prompt. He came to my house once and it was raining so he did not climb on the roof. He said he would get back to me but he never did. I was a little bit perturbed but not enough to call him back because when I found him on Angie's List, all the reviews were great.I originally found him working on a house and he said he would come. I called him a couple of weeks later and he came back. He was apologetic, he responded immediately and had his team do the work. They did it in two days and they cleaned up after. He did not need the money upfront.

James was very responsive to our request for an estimate, providing fast answers to all questions.   After receiving estimates from at least five other companies, we chose O'Connell based on price, scope of work, quality of materials, and prior Angie's List reviews.  The job was scheduled within 2 weeks and James and his team performed the work in two days, as promised.   Absolutely no complaints about the service or workmanship.    We would not hesitate to use O'Connell Roofing again.

Very responsive and pleasant.  Excellent references.  The project was complicated with many twists, turns and levels to an old gambrel style roof that was steep and high.  He started somewhat after he said he would, but my goal was to get the roof in before winter which he accomplished. He also repaired the roof over my garage that was leaking for free. He wasn't at the job as much as I thought, and there were some questions that came up that I would have preferred he settle more promptly, but James is a real person who you can talk to and communicate with.  Ultimately the roof came out great and an independent contractor who saw it was very impressed.

We wanted to have the roof replaced before winter and although we acted late on our summer estimate process, James fit us in and replaced the roof in one day and before winter.   We put the work out to bid and James had a very competitive quote and we already knew he was professional and thorough  .James replaced a smaller roof for us a few years ago and did a great job on that as well.

James was timely with his proposal and executed the roof install when he committed to do so. The overall install went very smoothly. It was accomplished in one day. Cleanup was good. His price was competitive. Roof looks great.

I researched area roofing contractors for about three months and interviewed five of them before deciding on James.  When I initially called James, he was away on vacation but he called me after he returned the following week.  Since I was doing my research in the summer, I was planning on having the roof replaced in the fall - when the weather was cooler, so I wasn't in a hurry to have it done.
When I met James, I sensed that he had a quiet self-confidence about him, and he didn't give me the impression that he was trying to make a quick sell, nor did he ever place any pressure on me throughout the process.  I felt that he was highly methodical in his calculations, suggestions and recommendations (for example, he recommend Velux skylights) and provided me with an estimate a few days later.  As a courtesy, he didn't charge for rebuilding a small gutter system on the north side of the house.  James provided me with references where his work is at least 10 years old - all of whom were very complimentary of his work.  He also provided shingle swatches for me to consider.  It took around two months from the moment I decided on James to when he and his crew did the work, but it was worth the wait and again, I wasn't in a hurry to have it done.  Throughout this time, James was in constant communication and he was always available to answer any questions.  I knew that I was in good hands.
When he and his crew of around 10 arrived (around 7 a.m.), I was impressed at how efficient they were and yet I didn't feel that they were in a hurry, either.  Everyone knew what they were supposed to do and no time was wasted.  There was no damaged roof decking.  It was a beautiful and sunny late October day, and they were finished around 4 p.m. - even with the relatively large surface area they had to work with.  No plants or vegetation were damaged in the process and they took great care in making sure that they cleaned up afterwards - even with removing two layers of old shingles.  The crew mistakenly took one of my leaf rakes but James promptly bought another one for me (it was autumn, after all).  James himself replaced the rotted fascia and he paid attention to details such as caulking, tapering the fascia boards, and applying paint as necessary.
I feel strongly that James is very meticulous in his work, and I highly recommend him.

Very Nice.

Prompt and courteous crew, even washed the skylights to finish the job.

I took several estimates for the job, O'Connell was more-or-less in the middle.

The roof in question is in the back of the house; it has a compound, shallow pitch - shallower towards the rear, over the porch.

Mr. O'Connell recommended membrane for the lower half, "architectural" shingles for the upper half.  Said they'd provide a little better coverage, seeing as it was a shallow pitch.  And not a lot more money than regular shingles.  I figured that at worst it couldn't hurt, and I knew this was a "problem roof".

They stripped the old roofing, replaced a bit of plywood sheathing that had water damage, and installed the new material in one day.

It looks like they didn't skimp on the materials.  They also had to disassemble the flashing around two skylights - and put it all back together again.  I know what they did, still can't tell.  Meticulous clean up - couldn't find any stray nails - and I gave the area a thorough once over.

Overall a very good job.

Highly Recommended.
