The job was done beautifully. The shingles were lined up so well that I could not tell an extra layer of rubber roof and water shields were
underneath them. Mr. O?Connell also made sure that the color of the new section matched the old roofs. When the job was done, it looked like a piece of art. We were extremely pleased with its quality. With all their work, the total price came out less than what I would spend on a brand new but probably useless roof work the other roofer suggested. Most of all, I feel better prepared for this coming winter.
When I met James, I sensed that he had a quiet self-confidence about him, and he didn't give me the impression that he was trying to make a quick sell, nor did he ever place any pressure on me throughout the process. I felt that he was highly methodical in his calculations, suggestions and recommendations (for example, he recommend Velux skylights) and provided me with an estimate a few days later. As a courtesy, he didn't charge for rebuilding a small gutter system on the north side of the house. James provided me with references where his work is at least 10 years old - all of whom were very complimentary of his work. He also provided shingle swatches for me to consider. It took around two months from the moment I decided on James to when he and his crew did the work, but it was worth the wait and again, I wasn't in a hurry to have it done. Throughout this time, James was in constant communication and he was always available to answer any questions. I knew that I was in good hands.
When he and his crew of around 10 arrived (around 7 a.m.), I was impressed at how efficient they were and yet I didn't feel that they were in a hurry, either. Everyone knew what they were supposed to do and no time was wasted. There was no damaged roof decking. It was a beautiful and sunny late October day, and they were finished around 4 p.m. - even with the relatively large surface area they had to work with. No plants or vegetation were damaged in the process and they took great care in making sure that they cleaned up afterwards - even with removing two layers of old shingles. The crew mistakenly took one of my leaf rakes but James promptly bought another one for me (it was autumn, after all). James himself replaced the rotted fascia and he paid attention to details such as caulking, tapering the fascia boards, and applying paint as necessary.
I feel strongly that James is very meticulous in his work, and I highly recommend him.
Very Nice.
Prompt and courteous crew, even washed the skylights to finish the job.
I took several estimates for the job, O'Connell was more-or-less in the middle.
The roof in question is in the back of the house; it has a compound, shallow pitch - shallower towards the rear, over the porch.
Mr. O'Connell recommended membrane for the lower half, "architectural" shingles for the upper half. Said they'd provide a little better coverage, seeing as it was a shallow pitch. And not a lot more money than regular shingles. I figured that at worst it couldn't hurt, and I knew this was a "problem roof".
They stripped the old roofing, replaced a bit of plywood sheathing that had water damage, and installed the new material in one day.
It looks like they didn't skimp on the materials. They also had to disassemble the flashing around two skylights - and put it all back together again. I know what they did, still can't tell. Meticulous clean up - couldn't find any stray nails - and I gave the area a thorough once over.
Overall a very good job.
Highly Recommended.
