I was given a written estimate for more than $4000 for the job. I told the owner, Nick Nadorf that was beyond my budget. He came to my house in person and gave me a verbal estimate of $3000 if I paid in cash. I agreed and gave him a down payment. The work that was performed was completely unacceptable in many ways. For example, the stove had a fan that shrieked as it scraped against the stove shell, obviously because of an incorrect installation. When I was finally was able to contact Mr. Nadorf (after trying at regular intervals for 8 months) he told me to turn the fan off. A forced air heat stove isn't much good without the fan running. I was shocked to receive an invoice for $4100, especially as I was unable to reach anyone to discuss it with. I paid the balance of the $3000, even though the stove was unusable. The reason I did this is because I always pay my bills and believe that differences can be settled through reasonable discussion. Mr. Nadorf billed me for an imaginary balance due for more than three years, while refusing to return my calls. He took me to small claims court, and the Judge ruled in his favor because he had "documentation" of the debt, i.e. his invoices. I had no ducumentation, therefore I was unable to prevail. I firmly believe in the court of public opinion, and that if we share our experiences someone may benefit.
