give an estimate and discuss the project before the work started. They stuck to their timeline and did all of the work themselves. They are pretty busy (probably because they are small and really good) so we had to wait for a few weeks - but our patience was rewarded!!
After the research I did for this project I knew that the base underneath the patio was really the key to everything. They really took their time making sure that the base was plenty deep and thoroughly compacted. They took great care with some tree roots they had to cut in the process. We had several drainage concerns and they dealt with them thoughtfully. It is perfectly graded away from our house, level and square where it needed to be and gently curved where we wanted..
And then there's what we can see - the patio itself. The workmanship is truly beautiful! We went with a basketweave brick-style pattern with a soldier course at the curved outer edge. We used CST Holland Classic II in Charleston Blend available from Cook Builders Supply - it's a tumbled paver with a distressed look. We got exactly what we wanted - a patio that matches the character of the house (cottage style) and looks like it's always been there.
After the job, the lawn between our driveway and the patio area was pretty messed up from the traffic. George leveled it out, put down some loam, spread seed and then put hay on top. It's 2 weeks later and the grass is already pretty well-established. We have already had one party on our patio and we look forward to many, many years of relaxing and socializing out there. As I said, we couldn't be happier!
Note: We considered doing a deck instead of a patio and the estimates were almost the same. We are SO glad we went with a patio - and looking forward to a lot less maintenance.
