"This customer and his wife were a delight to work with. Thank you for the positive review the pleasure was all mine."
When I interviewed other contractors for the job, some seemed to have the approach of just getting the work done so it was good enough. Adrian wants every job he does to be of the highest quality. It is his careful attention to detail and his strong presence on the work site that makes this happen. In addition to performing all contracted work within budget, he noticed and repaired things that needed fixing -- such as a couple spots where grout was missing between bathroom tiles -- something I doubt most people would have noticed.
During the demolition and construction, Adrian and his team took great care to keep my home clean and cause as little disruption as possible -- a challenge since work was going on in the kitchen, laundry room and master bedroom simultaneously. Every day I came home to a carefully vacuumed house.
Adrian kept me up to date as the work progressed and was very available to answer any questions I had (being a new homeowner, I had many). Despite his great deal of knowledge in this area (and my lack thereof) I never felt talked down to or blown off when he explained things to me. He did a really good job of including me in the process.
He takes pride in his work and it shows in the finished product. I am particular and I really couldn't be happier with the work done. I would definitely hire him again and will highly recommend him to anyone I know who's looking for a contractor in the future.
Mr. O'Hara is a pleasure to deal with on a personal level, and he's a hands-on carpenter as well as the general contractor. He kept the incidental nuisances of having work done on my living/dining space to a minimum, and he did fine finish-carpentry work on the trim and French doors. He was unwilling to use the doors that a custom shop would have provided because they were unwilling to include a significant feature (rabbeting), so he himself built the doors in his own shop. That kind of dedication to quality was evident throughout.
Downsides: As with all small contracting operations, his was doing other jobs at the same time, so the job was not done as soon as I might have liked, although the critical (and disruptive) work was done in one fell swoop. His assistants are competent, but not up to his own level, so the painting and spackling work was not at the A level of the (much harder and more essential) carpentry work that he did himself. If your job is not primarily a finish-carpentry job but primarily a painting job, look for an outfit where the lead person is a painter. (O'Hara mentioned that he has expertise in flooring as well, but that was not involved in this project.)
many years. Needless to say it needed a lot of work. The kitchen and bathroom
were in bad shape. I called Adrian of O?Hara Construction and he called me back
right away. He set up an appointment for the same week that I called. I
received his estimate within a week and felt comfortable that I got a good
price. Adrian went above and beyond with my kitchen and bathroom remodel. He is
a master craftsman. He re-created a couple of draw fronts that were previously
damaged on my 124 year old built in cabinets. You can?t even tell which draw
fronts are old or new they match exactly. He also built a cabinet to fit in my
small bathroom. I was looking for something that would look like it could have
been original to the house and he designed and built a wonderful cabinet just
from the description of what I wanted. I could not be any happier with the
quality of his work. He was on the job every day, which made me feel
comfortable that the work was going to be done the way we discussed. I need
some other work done in my house and the only person that I?m going to call is
Adrian.
We are pleased to write another report on O?Hara Construction. Adrian O?Hara, after completing the construction of our front porch, accepted our request to build a fireplace mantel and surround for a new gas fireplace. Our living room had no fireplace at all so this job involved design as well as construction. Adrian started the project by getting us to identify the styles we liked and that we thought would fit with the design of our 70-year-old house. We have a small, side entrance colonial house so we were concerned that the fireplace ? fit in? with the style and architecture of the house. Adrian gathered information from and for us and by talking to us and by reviewing various pictures of the styles we liked. He then came up with a design that was even better than what we had envisioned! Adrian is meticulous and precise and was extremely safety conscious going above and beyond the city building code requirements to insure that every piece of the framework and interior structure that would surround the firebox was fireproof. He handled the coordination of an electrician because we wanted to be able to place a TV above the fireplace. He designed the surround/cabinet so that the TV and accessories can be plugged into the back of the unit hiding all the cords. There was also a code requirement of a hard ?wired carbon monoxide detector, which the electrician installed. Adrian kept to his initial estimate of the work even though there were a few changes that had to be made and unaccounted design changes due to problems with the fireplace installers. Adrian is a conscientious and talented craftsman who commits himself to the job and sees it through to completion.
We found Adrian on Angie?s list and knew that we wanted him for our job and after some difficulty getting in touch with him (he is a busy man) we found that once he accepted our project his attention was focused on our job. Adrian consulted with us regarding the plans we had, which consisted of a picture of an enclosed porch we liked. He really helped us determine what we could and couldn't?t do regarding ?our plan? and he also offered suggestions for improvements on ?our plan?. We were thrilled with his creative ideas and the end product, which matched our expectations exactly!
The job for which we hired Adrian consisted of converting an open front porch/portico to an enclosed mud room with extensive detail (see photos), as well as replacing a patio sliding door, a side entrance door and a kitchen window. Adrian priced the job and stuck to that price with the exception of change orders that we requested or were mandated by city officials. For example, at some point during the porch construction, Adrian determined that a portion of the front sill had to be replaced. He quoted an additional modest amount for the work and we accepted. In another instance, although Adrian had received initial approval from the city for the porch without removal of the existing roof, a city inspector reversed this decision and so we had to replace the roof. Adrian adapted to these situations (which were not within his control) in a very professional way.
Adrian also functioned as the general contractor and procured the services of a stonemason, tile person, plasterer and electrician during the course of the porch construction. These subcontractors did a great job and stuck to their bid and this was a great relief to us. We should also mention that Adrian?s contract called for three partial payments with identifiable milestones. The third and final payment was not due until the job was completed to our and Adrian?s satisfaction. Adrian was a pleasure to work with and well worth the wait.
"UNFORTUNATELY ALL OF THE ABOVE IS TRUE. I DID NOT RESPOND TO THIS CUSTOMER IN THE PROMISED TIME FRAME. I ALLOWED THE PAPER WORK ASPECT OF MY BUSINESS TO LAPSE. I DO TRY TO MAINTAIN A HIGH LEVEL OF PROFESSIONALISM AND VALUE THE TIME MY POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS PUT TOWARD PLANNING THERE PROJECTS BUT AS IN THIS CASE SOMETIMES I FAIL. I DO UNDERSTAND THAT PLANNING ANY CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IS STRESSFUL AND WAITING FOR AN ESTIMATE FROM A CONTRACTOR WHO IS NOT RESPONSIVE ONLY ADDS TO THAT STRESS FOR THIS I APOLOGIZE UNRESERVEDLY. I HAVE MAINTAINED AN "A" RATING ON ANGIE'S LIST FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW BUT I HAVE LET THIS POTENTIAL CUSTOMER AND MY SELF DOWN IN THIS CASE. ALL MY ANGIE’S LIST CONTRACTS TO DATE HAVE BEEN PLEASED WITH THE WORK I PERFORMED FOR THEM AS I PERSONALLY CARRY OUT THE WORK IN A HANDS ON WAY AND AM THERE PRESENT ON SITE AT ALL TIMES. I DO NOT DROP WORKERS OF IN THE MORNING AND LEAVE I AM THERE WORKING START TO FINISH WHICH AT TIMES MAKES PAPERWORK DIFFICULT. I SINCERELY HOPE MY FAILINGS IN THIS CASE DO NOT AFFECT MY STANDING ON ANGIE'S LIST."
