Old roof had been there for over 30 years. We started noticing that pieces of shingles were starting to fall off the roof, so we decided to have the roof replaced.. Called Pete Benedictus and he returrned my call immediately. Came out the next day to give us a quote. He was explicit in what the job would entail, etc. The job was done in four full days. His crew were extremely courteous, professional and very punctual. They cleaned up each day. I would highly recommend Pete Benedictus to anyone who needs a roofing job. In fact, he was recommended to me, and I am so happy we chose him. Pete is very reasonable and honest.

Everything went well: very prompt, remarkably polite and attentive to detail. Looks really sharp and vastly improved over last roof we had installed 28 years ago (which was not such a nice experience).

When we first met Pete he won us over with his charm and kindness. He was very responsive up until the point where we told him he was hired. After that his true colors came out and red flags kept popping up. Unfortunately we didn't stop working with him. Our first clue should have been when he asked, "I assume we are going to do this without a permit." ?!?! The day he started he dug foundation holes without measuring out where they should be. The deck looks like a slapped together piece of junk. Nothing is level or cut straight. Pete was rarely on site, and most of the work was done by non English speaking men, which is fine (they seemed very nice) but whenever Pete did come out to check on things he would yell and scram at them and was so incredibly rude it made me sick! I would not recommend this guy for anything!!

Pete was great! Professional, competent, fun to talk to. His crew did the work swiftly and cleanly and we are very happy with the final product. Highly recommended.

The roof leaked horribly from day one. Peter made one small attempt to fix it... but water continued to flow into house. Asked him to fix recently again... and he hung up on us. Very unprofessional..... sloppy --- never ever use.

"Where to begin? I did install a new roof for the [member name removed] as they say. I quoted them to replace the main roof and one flat roof. Their house has 2 flat roofs and they had planned an addition over the second flat roof. Originally the addition was to be installed prior to the new roof but it was delayed for a few months and they asked me to roof the other areas first and they would do the addition in the fall. I agreed to this and installed the 2 roofs (neither have leaked). I gave the [member name removed] 2 prices for the flat roof getting the addition. 1st was to install a rubber roof for $2000. Second was a low slope modified roof which I told them would last 3-5 years. They were certain that the additioin would go on in the near future and asked that I just put a ice and water barrier down as a temp roof, which is what I did. One side note as you read this, the owner of the property is an architect and knows enough about building products and how long they last. For whatever reason the [member name removed] never did the addition and the ice and water barrier has failed but I was clear this was only temporary. It did last the majority of the winter and only failed with the heavier snow and the spring rains. When they called me this spring to fix it I went out to look and made a few attempts to stop leaks. I then advised them to go with the rubber roof if they weren't going to do the addition. They told me I had to do that for free. I reminded the [member name removed] that I originally quoted an additional $2000 for that portion of roof and if they were willing to pay that I would install a rubber roof. They informed me that if I didn't do it for free they would file negative reviews wherever possible. That's where we are now."

This is a tale of two Pete's and my assessment is admittedly a feeble attempt at averaging the two.
The first time I called Pete about the leak in our roof, he was very responsive and was able to squeeze us into his busy schedule. He stopped by, inspected the roof, gave us what sounded like a thoughtful diagnosis and recommended an initial quick solution that should most likely address the issue unless it was more complicated. His team patched the roof and he presented us with a very reasonable invoice (hence my favorable assessment of his pricing). Pete sounded candid in his response, was very personable and easy to talk to.
Unfortunately the rain later that evening demonstrated the initial fix had not worked as the roof continued to leak. I called Pete and left him a voice message with the update. After not hearing from him, I subsequently left him a few more messages which never received the courtesy of a response. I have never heard back from Pete and we luckily had not paid his invoice. It would have been nice to get at least a return call even if he was either too busy or not interested in (or even not capable of) tackling the more complicated roofing issue.
Here's hoping you get to experience only the first Pete when you call him. :)

"[member name removed] is pretty much correct in everything he said. He called me during a storm this past winter and I originally told him I couldn't get there to do the repair because I was very busy. I'm guessing he tried other roofer but everyone was busy due to ice damning and the heavy rains we had that week. He called again late I the afternoon asking if I could make it. I had about 45 minutes of daylight left so I agreed to come look. When I made it up to the roof I didn't notice anything terribly wrong. It was a new roof (not installed by me but I get the negative review) and things seemed fine on the outside. There were two vent pipes coming thru the roof directly above where the water stain was. I told [member name removed] I could try applying roof cement on those pipe boots and hopefully solve his problems. He agreed to this so that is what we did. Keep in mind I was there for an hour, had 3 employees with me, the condo was 4+ stories which required several ladders place on decks to get to the roof. I did this work for a whopping $100 and told [member name removed] if it leaks not to pay me. I also said if it leaks I wouldn't be able to do anything more for him and advised he contact the original installer to do the needed repairs. I thought this was very reasonable yet I get a negative review for trying to help! Thanks [member name removed]."

We purchased a house with an extension. The roof on the extension started to leak, so we brought in a roofer to fix the problem. After two attempts, the first roofer wasn't able to fix it (the leak would go away for a while, then come back during heavy rains). Finally the leak in the roof started to get worse, and we needed someone to come in immediately. Benedictus Contracting was the only contractor able to come the next day. Ultimately, they ended up redoing the roof of the extension for about the same price as the original roofer charged for the patch job.
Aside from fixing the roof (finally!) the thing that impressed me most was that they were never demeaning to the original contractor. They found some minor mistakes, but overall said that the original work was good - it's just that my particular issue was tougher to solve. So their evaluation was tough but fair. Their work was punctual and high quality. And the roof hasn't leaked since, despite the massive snow and rain we've had since January.

Pete from the start was one of the most courteous and conscientious contractors I've ever worked with. He explained in detail how he would complete each step of the process from beginning to end. I appreciated that very much, having experienced some lack of communication with other contractors. In addition, he was able to incorporate the plywood sheathing at my request at a reasonable cost. Also greatly appreciated.
The job went very well. His crew worked hard to insure that the materials and labor going into the roof was as good as Pete said it would be. It is true that he stands behind the quality of his work, because he was always available to answer my questions and respect my concerns in a professional and courteous manner every step of the way. At the end of the day his recommendations as well as the results of his entire team, with his supervision, was sound. I was also impressed by the flashing around the brick chimney, which looks great too.
I am happy to recommend Pete and his company to friends for their roofing jobs in the future.

Peter was great to work with. Emailed him and he called soon afterwards. Went to see the house the next day since he was working nearby. We spoke, agreed to scope and terms and he took action immediately to cover a portion of the roof since it was a leak that prompted my call.
Was very responsive, very reasonable with pricing a time and materials type project (no fixed price or bid), went out of his way to make sure the existing tenants were not disturbed, and did a very nice clean up at end of the work. He showed up when he said he would and took care of a difficult project during the 4th of July week.
Will call him again for roofing and exterior repairs. Highly recommend him.

I found Pete to be honest and straight forward. I've even had him out to view my Mom's house. She had water damage from the hurricane that came through last fall 2011 and Pete said to me wait on the house and if it leaked again, he would do the roof. He doesn't jump into taking your money and running. I had him over to see a friends house and he gave her some sound advice and she said if she ever had to do a roof... she would call him. He's prompt, punctual and very clean. When he finishes with your roof, he cleans up the entire site. If I ever have a question or need to call him, he returns my calls. He just recently came out to fix what appeared as 2 holes in the roof. Come to find out, it wasn't even his fault. It was my siding that had come off of the dormer and he fixed it for me. My chimney was giving me some water fall into the closet ceiling below and he used tar around the chimney area. Prior to using Benedictus Contracting, I was doing patch jobs with another roofer who was taking my money instead of telling me the truth that the plywood underneath the shingles was gone!! This other company kept dancing around the obvious that there was NO WOOD to hold the shingles onto the house and so he would give me the song and dance that I needed to use longer roofing nails. As a woman, I don't like being lied to nor do I like wasting my time and money. With Pete, I don't have these issues.

They did an excellent job on the three different components. In fact, it poured here yesterday and I looked at everything and it was dry. I would highly recommend them and I would use them again.

Pete arrived promptly to estimate the work, and was on time when the time to do the work came. He had a good understanding of older houses and did a great job.

I knew of Peter from someone else several years back. I have suggested him to others and when we needed a roof I contacted him. He was thorough in his examination of our roof and told us exactly what we needed and how the work would proceed. Peter showed up with his crew at the agreed upon date, they got to work, and the job was done quickly. Peter's crew also cleaned up after the work was completed. We had three layers of roof that had to be removed before installing the new one. Additionally, at the end of the winter there was something peculiar about some of the shingles; when I called Peter, he came right out to take a look and scheduled a day to come and address the problem. He is thoughtful, gives good hones service, and is reasonably priced.

Benedictus quoted approximately $4500 & other roofers quoted $10,000 & $17,000. When told of discrepancies & after reviewing other quotations, Benedictus said he would provide us with roofs based on scope of the $10,000 quotation for a cost of under $8,000. He determined the proper pitching of the roofs to provide maximum drainage & then completed job. Upon completion of the job, the drainage on one roof was considered adequate & on the other three, the drainage was significantly worse than before. To date, no leakage has occurred. Benedictus offered to fix the worst of the 4 at no cost & the next worst for $500 a piece. He redid the worst one two more times with marginal results at which point we decided to end our relationship with him & provided him with a settlement check. Even when redoing the worst deck for the third time, his workers operated unsupervised for a significant portion of the work process. 2 of the 4 units have water damage as a result of the job. 1 extensively.

"These customers were told from the beginning that getting the water off was impossible to do without spending over 10k per roof. I assured the customer that I could stop any and all leaks which by reading this review I did. For nearly a year there was no complaints of water leakage but amazingly 3 days after I filed a lawsuit it began to leak! In the end this customer did hire another company to completely change the structure of the condo in order to get the water off the roof. It was not because I didnt know how to taper the roof correctly, it was impossible to taper it enough to get the water off. These decks were 6 feet wide with sliding glass doors 4 inches off the deck. Basically that allowed me to taper the roof 4 inches in order to still get the rubber under the slider. As for a level? your right as a roofing contractor I dont carry around a 6 foot level, whats the point? We knew it was out of level and 4 inches was all we could get so level or not made no difference."

Project started pretty much on time and was completed on schedule. Overall, the roof looks great. When we later were having some chimney repairs, the chimney guys complained that the flashing around the chimney wasn't done properly. I don't know who is right, but we've been keeping an eye on the chimney and it hasn't leaked. Overall, Pete seems like a very honest and straightforward guy.

PETE CAME ACROSS VERY NICE, VERY HONEST AND COMPETENT. I'M NOT SURE IF I COMPLETELY MISREAD HIM, OR IF HE WAS SIMPLY OVER EXTENDED AND UNDERSTAFFED. HE TOOK ALL THE SLATE, AND LEFT MY ROOF WITH ONLY ICE & WATER SHIELD IN THE VALLEYS & EDGES & FELT PAPER ON THE REST. PRIOR TO HEAVY RAINING PERIOD. HE FAILED TO SECURE A VENT PIPE - WE COULD SEE THE SKY, AND WE HAD OVER $1000 OF DAMAGE INSIDE. THE END RESULT WAS ACCEPTABLE, BUT I LOST A LOT OF SLEEP. ALSO, THEY LEFT HOLES IN THE ROOF DECK WHERE THEY TOOK OUT OLD WHIRLYBIRD VENTILATORS & ROOFED RIGHT OVER IT. LUCKILY MY HANDYMAN NOTICED FROM INSIDE THE ATTIC. HE DID FIX THAT PROBLEM.
Response from Benedictus Contracting
"I was only allowed to work on this roof a couple days a week and not because I was over extended but because the owner is of Jewish faith and did not allow me to work on Jewish holidays. Because of this I did install the ice barrier to be certain of no leaks. At the time that I did this it seemed as if the only days it did not leak were holidays. Finally after a small leak I was allowed to come in and finish regardless of any holidays. As for the $1000 in damage it was a ceiling that was slighly stained because of heavy rain and a mattress did get wet as well. I took $1000 off the final price to keep the customer happy even though the damage was far less than that. Member was wonderful to work for but I wanted to get my side of the story out."
