As this was at the beginning of exterior painting season and I was in no hurry I told Casey this could be a rainy day job. We agreed he'd call me the day before he planned to come. A couple of weeks went by during which I acquired a piece of furniture that I wanted painted. I called to see if he could spray that which he said he could. I also went ahead and moved and covered the furniture in the rooms to be painted.
On the day painting was to start Casey arrived early (7AM), as planned, so I could discuss what I wanted done with the furniture. We didn't have time to discuss a price for that. His helper arrived while we were talking, put down some tarps to cover the floor, and started painting (no sanding the wall). I have natural cedar ceilings and those weren't taped off. I don't know how many people ultimately showed up to paint but they had put on two coats in the two rooms and were gone by the time the dog walker arrived at 1:30. I don't have any idea if this is really fast or not.
The small bedroom looks fine. The corner repair in the den isn't "like new" but it's better than it was. There are certainly wall irregularities that indicate the walls weren't sanded (at least not to be smooth). Generally, I think this is a case of you get what you pay for...it's OK but not "great" but then again this is a 35 year old house so it's not without wear.
Casey took the furniture home to spray it with a commercial sprayer. Like the wall, it's OK but not perfect---there are surface irregularities that indicate he didn't look the piece over well before spraying and did it in a location that had some dust and minor debris that settled in the wet paint. I'm spent some time sanding it and am going to apply a second coat with a crackle finish so most of this won't show anyway. As I never got a quote for that work I haven't paid anything for it.
The outdoor work wasn't done (still hasn't been a month later) even though we'd agreed that I'd leave the paint outside and he'd stop by after work some afternoon.
Overall, young guy who is personable but promises a more professional job than he delivers. When I need more painting I'll look elsewhere...and guess I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and go up the ladder to do the outdoor work!
The price was $2400, but there was a 10% coupon from Angie?s List. So, it was about $2160. I think they could have improved on their service in the area of preparation and attention to detail. We got several bids for the job and they were substantially lower than the others. However, you get what you pay for at the end of the day and we unfortunately didn?t. They were extremely responsive. They were punctual and always showed up when they said they would. I think they need to work on their professionalism. There was no contract. They were a little too informal for my case when it was to do with the whole business and writing up exactly what they were going to do.
