T. K. Lyden Electric

Electrical, Generator

About us

T. K. Lyden Electric and Generator was started in 1975 by Timothy K. Lyden. Mr. Lyden apprenticed in the electrical industry and earned his MA License after returning home from serving our great nation as a ship electrician in the Vietnam Conflict. Shortly after, Lyden started his own electrical business with a focus on providing excellent service. He has always held the belief that his customers are the reason he survived - and they deserve to be treated that way.

Excellent, every aspect of the experience. The site visit to quote the work, the installation and setup were awesome. The installation was done in the early winter. Their team came back in the spring to loam and seed around the generator! This was unexpected and much appreciated.

The service was great. About 3 people came out to do the work. It took them a couple of days to do their work, for a project that took 8 months to complete. They were the best. They did everything that they said and the price was what they said it would be. They were dood honest people, responsive and they came on time.

I subcontracted the proprane connection, and then T.K. Lyden did the electrical work and installation. He did not honor all the terms of the contract but did kindly offer to include 2 small related electrical tasks as part of our agreement. Mr. Lyden did honor these promises and they were completed and nicely done, but I was billed in error several times months after for one of them. The generator was improperly installed on the site so it did not meet Generac requirements or the town inspector's requirements. In my contract it stated that he would be digging the trench to bury the propane line, but he did not do so and I had to hire the local contractors to do it. He dropped the generator off and placed it (without connecting it) by placing it on four cinder blocks (one on each corner). It sat for 2 months before he came back to connect it and finish the installation. The entire process took approximately 6 months. The generator is supposed to be installed on a pad or 6 inches of crushed stone, or both per Generac. T.K. Lyden did neither. I sent photos, which I still have, to Generac and they said they would void the warranty if left on the 4 cinder blocks. Not to mention, permits were not properly obtained by T.K. Lyden, until after work commenced. When I showed him the letter from Generac, he told me he always installs the generator and then digs beneath it to add the 6 inches of stone. When I became aware of the improper installation, the gas line had already been connected. So the generator had to be lifted and reconnected to the propane line which cost me an additional, unnecessary $200 for the propane reconnection. The generator is supposed to self test weekly and it was set for 2:00 am on Wednesday mornings. For whatever reason, he locked it and took the keys so that I couldn't change the test schedule for 3 weeks until Generac sent me replacement keys. Mr. Lyden is very pleasant, and the generator is functioning properly. I expect that there is some explanation for all of the "complications" in this installation but as I am not in good health, I did not expect nor did I need the stress involved in this project. Lyden Electric was recommended by one of the online services that recommends contractors. I fully expect that he is a fine electrician but sadly, I can not recommend him for a generator installation project. Also, please read your contract carefully and check for billing errors after the project is completed and full payment is made. Again, I expect that these are simply errors, but fortunately I have"paid" documentation from Lyden Electric. Be sure that any "verbal agreements" are included in your contract. When I spoke to Mr. Lyden by phone in late December 2012 regarding an erroneous $175 bill for the floodlight installation, we discussed the possibility of my reviewing my Angie's List evaluation, which I have done this evening, (1/10/2012) before reading his "provider response" below. In that same phone conversation, Mr. Lyden kindly agreed to correct the billing error for the $175 and I have full confidence that he did so as promised. I did modify my comments and evaluation grades as best I could while remaining honest in my evaluation. Sadly, I find his comments in his "response" (below) confusing. I can only speculate on his motives for some of the statements made therin. One possible factor in the difficulty in completion of this instalation is the distance from Templeton, MA to Norfolk, MA. Perhaps I should have taken this into consideration before awarding the contract to T.K. Lyden. I do regret this oversight on my part. Added on 1/11/13. In response to the "Provider response", may I respectfully add the comments below. I very much regret the comments in the "provider response". Rather than get involved in a "he-said, he-said" argument, may I suggest that if you elect to use ANY company for a generator installation, please do the following: - review your contract thoroughly and make sure all specifications therein are accurately followed, -any additional items you want done should be included in the contract and everything shoud be spelled out clearly and are followed to the letter, -make sure that the installation is done in compliance with town regulations and the requirements of the generator manufacturer, -when work is completed, get a 'Paid in Full' receipt, which I have, -check with your town to see who is responsible for obtaining the required permits, and if the permits need to be pulled before work begins, -request a written completion date estimate but keep in mind that waiting time may vary somewhat before the generator is made available to the installer. Finally, when the generator is physically installed on the property, it is extremely important that this be done in compliance with manufacturer requirements or your warranty will be voided. Generac has very specific guidelines and I assume other manufacturers do as well. I do hope that these suggestions are helpful.
Description of Work: I purchased a Generac whole house generator from TK Lyden and also had them do the installation.

Response from T. K. Lyden Electric
As a Electrical Contractor Business for over 40 years I have never run into quite a situation. This year to date have installed 127 Generac Generators and have Generac Certified Factory Trained Staff to Install each unit. Generac has not informed us of one complaint or this clients letter. All permits were obtained and we offer proof. All inspections were passed by Local Authority and is public record. The propane company Obtained and passed all their inspections as well. This particular client from the start micro managed every aspect of the installation causing argument after argument and raising issue after issue with all parties involved. We made multiple appointments and he never showed then complained that we had the wrong dates. We wanted to place the unit on a 6" crushed pad, he insisted mulch then after was set changed his mind and wished it on stone. We returned with a smile and made the adjustment. We wanted to dig his trench, he said he could get it done for less and then accused us of not digging. He would invite our entire crew to lunch, take our order, leave and not return for hours and then ask us if we wanted lunch. He had upset the Electrical department, the propane company, the housing community and the gas inspector before he was finally completed. After Months of delays and changes made by all parties and at no charge we asked to be paid and he paid for the Generator with a smile and said great job and shook my hand. He even hired us to install a new floodlight that he still has not paid for and will not respond to. The client has gone all over the internet stating falsehoods about our company ranging from Pricing to False Statements and has been discredited by Lead Companies like Service Magic, Home advisor and Manta that have removed his comments and have issued warnings to him. We currently have sought legal representation to explore Liable charges. End result is that out of thousands of happy clients you will eventually wind up with one that is suffering from their own Bi-polar or unbalanced issues. All we can do as a service provider is our best and pray we get to the end with a happy client. Note: We ask that Angie's list explore this complaint and talk with the other lead generation companied noted. After a complete investigation apologies and remove this illegitimate complaint.
