American Fences Inc

I think they did a good job. The fence is nice and straight and the ground is solid. The fences were at a fantastic price. I was very happy with them and I let them know that too. The quality of the fence was good and they took care of it in one day. There was not much waiting. It was a fair price. The people who showed up to do the work were there on time.

Our initial contact with Paul was positive and everything seemed to get off to a decent start.  Once our landscaping was done and it was time for the fencing to go in, it took a month of emails and phone calls to get the work to actually take place.  We found American Fences lack of proactive communication to be particularly frustrating.  Estimated start dates would come and go with no explanation. 
The actual workers who installed the fencing did a good job and were pleasant and professional. 
After the project was complete, 5 weeks behind schedule, American Fences emailed an invoice with a 30 day payment term.  6 days later they charged our credit card for the full balance due without first confirming this was how we wished to pay the balance. 
Overall, a very disappointing experience.  I would not recommend this company. 

I really wish I'd signed up with Angie's List before hiring this company. STAY AWAY!

Paul, the owner, seemed great when he first came out to give us an estimate. As soon as he took a down payment on the project, however, it was a HORRIBLE experience. Weeks and weeks after taking our money and having signed a contract, I FINALLY heard back from him but only after THREATENING LEGAL ACTION!  The workers finally showed up to install the fence but didn't have all the pieces they should have.

When Paul showed up to check their work, he was a COMPLETE A** to me and wouldn't even shake my hand (unbelievable RUDE). He LIES about everything and then acts like the customer is the problem. We're fairly reasonable, but if a contractor tells me his crew will be there on Wednesday, showing up TWO WEEKS LATER WITHOUT ANY CONTACT is just ridiculous!

So far, they have yet to install the front fence we ordered. It's taken FOUR MONTHS to get this far. Our fencing jobs were simple and the products were NOT CUSTOM.  There's NO EXCUSE for such service (or lack thereof).

The rear fence looks good and seems to have been installed correctly (though I watched EVERY step to ensure they were using the correct materials) but only time will tell if the work holds up. I'm hoping our long-term experience is different from the previous poster and that we won't have to have the work redone, but only time will tell.

In the meantime, DO NOT WORK WITH THIS COMPANY! Paul's prices are very competitive but it's not worth the headache!!!

Update 8/4/11

Well, we're three months into the install of our front fence and have yet to RECEIVE a front fence. After I called and threatened legal action, Paul FINALLY called me back and our back fence was installed 2 days later. And then, as is typical with this company, no contact and no work for 2 months.

I finally got tired of waiting and called Paul Monday-before-last about the front fence. He claimed he was "just going to call [me]." (Sure you were, dude.) He then said they would be there "this Thursday" to install the fence. That was two weeks ago. Still NO FENCE!

Paul then called me yesterday (I was shocked!) and asked us to put up a marker as to where we want the front fence. They are supposed to arrive today to put up the 25' fence in the front yard, but no shows as of yet.

They did finally show up the next day to install the front fence but installed the WRONG TYPE of fence! When I got ahold of Paul to discuss it, he tried to convince me that the spindle-style fence his guys put in was actually considered "semi-private" (what we had ordered).  Of course, they also had an extra length of fence and a corner piece that did NOT match our order. So, a week later, Paul finally sent his workers back over to install the correct fence. However, no calls in between and no explanation or apology. I still had to have them come back TWICE to ensure the fence was plumb and level.

Seriously, if you don't mind being lied to and it taking MONTHS to install a simple 40' or 25' fence, go ahead and work with American Fence. If you don't mind extending your hand to shake the hand of your contractor and having him TURN AWAY, work with American Fence. BUT, if you want work done on time, as promised and to deal with a decent, polite human being, PICK ANOTHER FENCE COMPANY!!!

Update 10/12/11

Came home to find that American Fence had come by at some time and attached metal "stickers" to our fences with their name and contact information on them! They did NOT ask for permission and appeared to have come by when we were not at home.

I emailed the owner and told him this was unacceptable.  He sold us the product but that does NOT mean he can treat our property as if it was his own. The response? Two sentences:"It is a standard practice to add signs to the fences we install.  Sorry though for the inconvenience."

Sneaky behavior and lack of remorse. Again, PICK ANOTHER COMPANY TO WORK WITH!!!

Awful, teriible and from bad to worse, and we had to hire and pay another company to redo the fence.
