There are two reasons I did not give them an A: first, the bathroom paint job has the old color showing through in a couple of places. Not everywhere, just two small patches. I will have to touch them up myself. And he painted half of an electrical socket, so is now half white and half beige. Not tragic, but a bit annoying. The other reason is that the guys did not clean up after themselves very well. This is an old house, and the paint they were sanding/chipping away could very well have lead in it. When they left there was dust all over the dining room floor and on our bathroom counters, and there were a bunch of paint chips on the stairs that must have fallen out of the drop cloth when he carried it down. We have little kids. This made my husband NUTS. He spent an hour cleaning up himself before going to pick up our kids.
The initial contact and setup went so well I figured it was too good to be true, and I was right. From that point on communication was poor and at times radio silence. A week prior to the work being completed reached out to confirm a few items:
1) Wall patch work will be sanded
2) Cost if the job was "too big" to be done within the time frame I was quoted and paid for
When I hadn't received any response I contacted Angieslist to cancel the order and request a refund - I was given the run around from them and finally told "Too late for a refund" - eventually someone very helpful and proactive from Angieslist assisted me in getting in touch with the provider.
At first I received a rather rude voice mail questioning me as to why I wished to cancel with no notice - once they were informed from Angieslist I was trying to get in touch the tone immediately changed.
Long story short - was able to change the paint date due to work etc.
Please note in the interest of time I patched all holes in the walls and ceiling. I also removed all light and outlet plates so that things would move faster. Due to a timing issue I also stated I no longer required all the window and door trims to be painted and I assumed this would cut down the time significantly. (Please note I confirmed several times the painters would sand all patch jobs)
Day 1 - painters arrived an hour late. I had to call them looking for a time. When painters arrived they apologized for tardiness and then followed up with "we have to be out by 3:30" and that the job was too big for one day and they would come back the next day and not charge for one hour to make up for the hour they missed day one. I informed the painters I no longer required the trim work and they insisted it was still a 2-day job.
(A living room - dining *open concept* was being done and 3 walls in a kitchen)
At the completion of Day 1 the ceiling, walls, and trim in the Living & Dining rooms were done. The kitchen was "trimmed" and needed to be completed. They left promptly at 3:30pm.
Please note they were very friendly and explained the ad says 8 hours but require a break so really work 7 hours - which was explained when I made very first contact.
Day 2 - I was not present however they completed the kitchen walls and were done in 2 hours - only had to pay only 1 hour due to the tardiness the day before.
When all dried the living room and dining room looked pretty good - a few imperfections here and there, edge of walls by staircase were ignored, and the trim was a little streaky in spots.
When I walked into the kitchen all the patch jobs were not sanded (as stated they would be) so I now have newly painted bumpy patches - and there were certainly areas on the walls that looked as if they literally slapped the brush against the wall - the ceiling was horribly streaky and the trim as well.
Totally disappointed -
"[Member name removed], You are correct and I am truly sorry for your poor experience. I wish you had contacted me as I am just learning of this now from your review. The employee that was responsible for your project and 2 others the same week as yours has been fired. As I mentioned I was on vacation during your project and obviously made a very poor choice in leaving him to complete your project. Please allow me the chance to make it up to you as I sincerely wanted you to have a fantastic experience. Dan I"
Very good and prompt communication before and on the day of. Much quicker than anticipated. Very good quality.
Our job turned out to be more complicated than he thought. He and his team did some work extra prep on our family room walls that were cracking etc. The wallpaper border removal was harder than he thought and had to resurface some of the wall when the removal was done. He explained all of the adjustments that needed to be done and added an additional price to the quote which we agreed to pay.
Dan made sure that we were satisfied with all the work. On the last day he came back and happily made some adjustments on the new bathroom vanity doors when they were rubbing against some molding. He did listen to our requests and makes the clients needs a top priority.
