We experienced an ice dam on our roof March 5, 2015 that left it "raining" in our breakfast room. We called Mr. Smegal to help get the ice dam cleared off the roof and he sent a crew within hours the same day. He reviewed the damage and worked with our insurance adjuster to provide a complete renovation. The room has a cathedral ceiling with two large skylights and the water intrusion occurred around the skylights traveled down the rafters and damaged the exterior wall. This job involved removing the ceiling and exterior wall down to the rafters and the studs and sheathing, which included removing the insulation. The job also involved removing all the wallpaper in the room because the exterior wall had water damage, followed by repainting the interior. The structure was treated with fungicide before re-installing the insulation and replacing the cedar plank ceiling with new wood. Mr. Smegal made suggestions for the renovation that would help prevent future ice dams, e.g. installing ceiling fans (purchase and installation not covered by insurance). The finish work, carpentry, sheet rock and re-painting is superb. Mr. Smegal also made repairs to the roof around the skylights (not covered by insurance as this is considered maintenance). While the restoration and renovation was in progress we decided to have the floors refinished in the breakfast room and the kitchen (floors weren't damaged so that cost not covered by insurance). We are very pleased with the floors. Mr. Smegal's prices are very fair, he is honest, forthright, hard working and committed to a quality job being very concerned with customer satisfaction. He has not been responsive on a callback on the most recent work and I have had to threaten legal action.

I ended up choosing another contractor. I liked Paul very much but the other contractor and I had a mutual friend who had had personal experience with him and was completely satisfied. That was the reason I made my decision. Other than that, it was hard to choose between them.

This experience was the best that I've ever had with a contractor. Not only is his work exemplary, he is timely, reliable, neat and concerned for the overall comfort of the homeowner during the renovation process. Not a day went by when either he, or one of his employees was at my home promptly at 9:00am. They were conscientious about their behavior and language while on the job, polite and friendly to my family and more than open to listening to any questions/comments that we had. During the 5 weeks of renovations, he suggested some of his own ideas for us to consider (and we took him up on most of them!) as we got down to the detailed part of the work. He was right on target with the completion date, despite a few unforeseen snags that we ran into along the way, and was completely finished in 5 weeks. Without question I would call him again and would recommend him to anyone who needed work done to their home.
