The people at Downeast Chimney responded very quickly to questions I had. They were very patient and easy-going in handling multiple inquiries I had as I learned more about what is involved in replacing a chimney cap. Everyone from the company was very straightforward in their answers, and they did not try to sell work that was not required. Their explanations reflected their extensive experience, but were put in terms that someone like me who is not familiar with this kind of thing, could understand easily. They followed through on everything that they said they would do.

We'd had two other chimney companies in (the first for cleanings and an inspection, the second for a second opinion). Both indicated that we would need several thousand dollars of work (new lining, etc.), so we spent some time searching for a third opinion and found Downeast thanks to Angie's List. They were very professional and methodical and ultimately saved us thousands of dollars of unnecessary work. Highly recommend and will definitely use again.

The representatives, who came to our house to view the chimney, were very pleasant and extremely professional and knowledgeable. As promised, we received a proposal within a day or two. Since it was a relatively small job, they were able to return to perform it within about two weeks.
Description of Work
Repair of masonry crown and cutting of flue tiles which were in disrepair. Minor repair of damaged chimney bricks and installation of a custom stainless steel chimney cap.

I couldn't have asked for better service. They were highly professional. When they were done, everything was left as neat as a pin. Their investigation found that the 1932 chimney had only partial lining and that the interior of the chimney was deteriorating. We now have full linings for both the furnace and fireplace. A large glob of old cement blocking a portion of the chimney was discovered and expertly drilled out with only two exterior bricks being removed. These were neatly replaced. They were responsive and came exactly when they said they would, both for the initial evaluation and for the work itself. I would not hesitate to recommend their services.

He was friendly, explained everything he was doing and was very busy with other work and yet still made the time to come see us. He told us that he didn't want us without heat that day and he fulfilled that promise. That's what we're so pleased with. I will be using him again.

Our chimney blew down due to strong winds from a storm this past weekend. We had no heat and didn't have no heat until the technician came out that Sat afternoon. We called him in the morning and had heat by the evening.

Excellent, they were on time and very professional and friendly. They installed a new stainless steel liner after showing us the cracked clay flue and clearly explaining why we should have a liner installed and the benefits, install process, timeframe, etc. They also performed some work in the fireplace to seal it, as the wood mantle was actually visible from within the fireplace due to poor initial construction. They also performed some minor repointing of the interior fireplace brickwork.

We had the fireplace and chimney inspected to determine if we could safely use it for wood fires. We also knew we needed a chimney cap as significant amounts of water were collecting in our fireplace during storms.

Highly recommended. Responsive, polite, and professional. Had an inspection and cleaning on a first visit, called them back about a year later to have a cap installed on a new chimney. Both excellent experiences. Very thorough, knowledgeable and professional. When we needed a chimney rebuilt after it was damaged, they came to inspect, ascertained that the work was beyond their scope, and referred us to another excellent provider who did great work also. Absolutely recommend these guys.

Downeast was excellent. Ross and his son were very professional. They came out after work just a week ago to take a look at the work needed. They then provided an excellent quote, and we were off the races for that coming weekend to get it done. They had some guys who did the old chimney removal and new chimney build. Then they had to fish out the old beaten up aluminum liner, and then put in a brand new stainless steal liner. We have two story house with a very steep roof, so they had to build up a large scaffolding along the side of the house the day before, and then the next day they completed all the work. They were very fast and we are very pleased with the look of the new chimney. They also did a great job with the new connection in the basement that is now up to code and better sealed. We would definitely recommend them to others.

Our external chimney for our exhaust for our heating system was basically falling apart. We needed the entire chimney that was sticking out of the roof replaced, a new liner put in, a cap placed on top, and connection work redone in the basement that connects to the heating system to the chimney. During a previous MassSave inspection they detected a light amount of CO2 in the basement near the chimney.

I actually contacted Downeast Chimney Sweep in September 2014 to discuss the work and get an estimate. But, for a variety of personal reasons, I wasn't able to have the work done until September 2015. Ross was great about getting back to me in 2014 and promptly set-up an appointment to look at the job. He and his father, Louis, came out to look at the chimney and provided, what I felt to be, an honest assessment of what did and didn't need to be done. A few days after our meeting, Ross sent me a proposal via e-mail. When I contacted Ross in 2015 about proceeding with the work, he was great! And, actually Louis & Ross ended up getting to the job sooner than I expected. They are quite an efficient team, so the work went smoothly and quickly; and they cleaned-up everything before leaving. They needed to return to install the chimney cap (which was on order) and did that within a few days as promised. I'm 100% pleased with the work and with the overall experience. I highly recommend this very knowledgeable & professional father & son team!

I called Downeast Chimney based on their positive reviews on both Angie's List and on my neighborhood website. The gas company, here on another matter, identified a problem with the venting of my tenants' water heater and, as a result, had to turn the gas off to the water heater as they said it was a potentially hazardous situation. They suggested that I call a chimney company to see what the problem was. I left a message for Downeast and Ross responded the next day. Despite the fact that they were booked months out, he offered to squeeze me in today. They arrived earlier than I even expected, were amazingly pleasant and professional, and cleared the chimney in a short time. Lewis even offered to relight the hot water heater for me, but then thought it best for me to call the gas company since they had shut the gas off to the appliance. They only charged me the fee for a service call. I can't imagine having a better experience and would highly recommend them without any reservations. A pleasure to work with and they will be a permanent fixture on my list of go-to people!

Excellent service and professionalism. They not only did a good job with the cleaning, they informed me that the exterior of my chimney was in "good shape" and that I had a fully lined chimney and a smoke guard (which no one had every told me before). I really appreciated their honesty and customer service. They cleaned the creosote that had built up over five years and the firebox is now immaculate. They even made friends with my dogs. Will definitely have them back. Excellent overall.

This was one of the best contractor experiences we have had. For starters, Louis persisted in calling me back even though it took many tries for us to catch each other on the phone. Whereas it can be hard to get some contractors just to call back at all, Louis was patient and generous, returning my call at least four times. When he came out to the house, he arrived promptly--in fact, early--and spent a lot of time answering our questions, even ones about other masonry and about the venting of our hot water heater, that were not directly involved with the chimney. Most importantly, Louis saved us about $2,000 on repairs that a previous contractor had told us we needed to do. This was the second time we used Downeast, as Louis's son Ross came out to inspect our chimney four years ago. Then too Ross was prompt, friendly, knowledgeable, and supremely honest. I will never call anyone else for chimney work. It's refreshing to know there are still people like this out there.
