They charged me $45 an hour. I never met the workers. I only met the supervisor. I work with a non-profit energy efficiency company and I have gotten to know him through that work, but he is very professional and anytime I ever had a problem, I would call him and he would resolve it very quickly. Everything is not bad when they were all done. We would definitely have them back. What stood out the most about the service was how they tried to understand exactly what was needed, getting back to me immediately with answers to my questions, and making sure the job site was cleaned up. It is just the professional way they run their business. I am willing to pay a little more because they always fit me into their schedule and they are very reliable once they get going.

This job presented challenges to any builder as the home is a contemporary with open post and beam construction and the job was a complete replacement of an existing bathroom. Some of the plumbing had to be relocated in a way that didn't visually intrude into other living spaces, which was difficult given that the bathroom was on the second floor. Steve's crew did all of the carpentry work, and the plumbing, electrical, and tile work were subbed out. The job took over a month to complete but as this is a second home there were no time pressures as there was another bathroom in the house. The team was extremely careful about putting coverings over the wood floors to protect them as the workers came in and out and even though we were not in the home when most of the work was performed, everything was always in order when we arrived at the house on weekends during the construction period.

As with any job of this nature there were a few miscommunications that resulted in some work having to be done over, however Steve is, if anything, completely customer service oriented. He returned phone calls and emails in a timely manner, showed up when he said he would, and did everything possible to assure that we were satisfied with the job that he and his crew did.
We plan to call him back to discuss a kitchen renovation.

The kitchen project was completed in only 2 weeks! Steve Silverman was incredibly thorough in the initial phase of the design and remodel. He gave us a start date as well as a completion date and his team was finished 2 weeks ahead! We had questions about electrical work prior to signing the contract and he brought in a electrician to give us options. Steve brought in his carpenter and cabinetmaker for thorough measurements. He also prepped us completely about what we would need to do before the work would start- choose lighting, flooring, sinks, faucets, countertop so that the job could be finished in a timely manner.
The first day the lead carpenter Steve was on site measuring for the sheetrock. Day 3- the vinyl floor was installed. By the end of the first week, many of  the cabinets that were built in their workshop were brought to our home and installed.  All inspections were completed before the end of the 4 weeks. We cannot say enough about the professionalism and skills of all of the folks that work with Valley Home Improvement. They were responsive, down-to-earth and a pleasure to work with. We have a beautiful kitchen!

Steve Silverman is the owner.  He oversees all the details and makes sure the team members get the right details.  Worker showed up on time and leaves area clean at the end of the day.  They are always open to discussion on  how things should be done. Very easy to work with.

They are a very professional group. When they are done you don't go in and say what a mess. They are careful as they go on. They put plastic screen between where they are working and all the areas, so it is not a big concern. We had them do the kitchen first. They did that in 2009. We were very pleased with it, so we had them go ahead and do the bathrooms one after the other. We kept using them, so obviously we didn't think the price was that bad. They do a good job. They come back quite a bit after the work is done to deal with any problems that might come up. There was for instance a squeaky faucet that we called them about over a year after it was put in and they came out and replaced it. The crew that did the last bathroom was an A the whole way. The crew that did the bathroom before that, I might have some complaints, but I know that Steve Silverman, who runs shop, has actually let one of those guys go. I've re-used them several times. What Valley Home Improvement does is they are a design and building group. So they come out and work on the overall idea and give you some help. You agree on what is going to get done and he brings in people and he helps you shop for the tile and shop for the plumbing fixtures and all that. So there is a lot of overhead that is very valuable when you are working on a big job, but if you have something like I want my front porch repaired, you are not going to go to this group. The only caution I would give anybody is that I would say over all the projects they haven't been that good at staying on schedule with the project. By the end we kind of knew to expect that if Steve said it was going to take four weeks, then I said OK, it's going to take eight. If you just brace yourself for that, it's fine. It is not like everybody is there every day for eight weeks. They get most of the work done and then it just kind of slows down at the end.

The workers were great. It seemed like the contractor picked not ideal lumber. The workers even told me that I should watch out what he puts in. It just seemed like he was trying to get the work done with the cheapest materials. Steven was great, it was his boss that was, well, we still have drywall issues. I would call and ask them to come back. He wouldn't come back. I call back and he finally came back. A month or 2 later the same thing happens and after the 4th time of we'll be back tomorrow and not having anybody show up I just gave up with having them fix things. The workers were great, Steven was great, a lot of times he was out here alone doing the siding.
The workers he brought were great. They went above and beyond what they had to do. When they saw a problem with the steps, Steve and Dan were exceptional people. The owner was just trying to make a profit on cheap material.
I would use them again only if Steven were the owner.

They were very helpful and patient as changes had to be made to the original design. Their employees are very polite and professional. We did some other work through out the house during the remodel. We were able to remain in the house during the work and they were very careful about keeping all dust from the rest of the house.  We are very pleased with all of their work and were impressed with the way they respond to issues from the owner down.

If the owner, Nelson Shifflett, did the work himself, I am sure that it would have been spectacular. However because you are at the mercy of your crew, sometimes they do not show up for work or they do not finish what they are supposed to do so my two months' job of remodeling a kitchen and part of a bathroom ended up taking nearly a year. I used Nelson before and after that. What happens is that when they get overwhelmed with jobs, they take people off your job to go to another job and sometimes that makes the continuity of your job less and you do not get your job done quickly. However, I really do love Nelson. I think he is great. I like his ideas and all in all, the work is usually good and I also know that the timeliness is a question and sometimes you are at the mercy of whoever he happens to have that day on the crew. Some people are better than others. It has been a while since I used him. I was involved in a fire and he buttoned up the house after the fire for us. I have had communication with him on several occasions since then for lots of other things. Occasionally once in a while I call him about a problem. In 2008, I had explained that if he could recommend somebody I needed for a tiny job. My daughter had accidentally put her foot through a friend's basement wall. Before I knew it, he sent somebody to do it and never charged me. I like him as a person very much. He is better than others but his workers never completely finished the job. They never put the moldings back. This is a company that will not paint. You still have to find somebody else to do the painting which was a problem. They left the moldings off because it had not been painted yet.You are living without your molding thing up for a while and still in a little disarray. The price was about in the middle. What they did on the job was what they charged me. There was no additional. The kitchen is probably around three hundred square feet and the bathroom is also pretty small. The quality was good especially the cabinets. They were fantastic. They were very responsive in the beginning and at the end but it is that whoever is in charge in the middle that usually becomes the issue because they did not pull off one job and sent to another. When they were first arriving when they said they were going to be there, they were usually there. They are prompt but again if they get called away, you do not see them for quite some time. Most of the time they are professional but the owner is quite professional but I did have a problem where we all agreed that a ceiling would be done in one way but the worker did not wait for instructions and ended up in the other direction. We ended up paying for it though it went in another direction than we had originally decided to do. That would split the cost with him. I think they are a dyslexic organization where the right hand does not always know what the left is doing. If somebody says they have enough crew this season to do twenty jobs but then they only hire enough to do sixteen jobs, that leaves a number of crew to double duty and that makes it impossible to finish a job on time. I would call Nelson to use him again, but the deal would be, in the contract I have a deadline; and for each day that they are over that date, they pay me. I have learned my lesson and I have used them twice.

There was one catastrophe after another. I thought the price was extremely high for what they offered. The quality of workmanship did not match the quote. In the end, we were happy with what we paid but it did not come easy. They did nothing that makes them look good. There is nothing good that I can say about them. They were the reason we joined Angie’s List they had good reviews. I feel that I want people to know to be careful. They came in very professional. I feel that we were sold a bill of goods. How they presented themselves is not what we were given in any shape or form. It was just an awful experience. There were a lot of delays and the guy we worked with was very pleasant. I did not feel I had confidence in any of them. The one that did seem in charge was very rude and arrogant. We have work done all of the time. Their workers were constantly apologizing for them. The final product looks fantastic. The sub-contractors made it good, not Valley Home Improvement. I would not use this company again but I would use their sub-contractors. The sub-contractors were great.

"Member, I understand why you feel this way and despite my good intentions, problems arose throughput your project, some of which were self inflicted. As you know, I was dissatisfied with many facets of how things unfolded, and I bear this responsibility fully. In the end, the bathroom is beautiful, but it involved too much hardship along the way. Respectfully, Steven Silverman"

We had a very short, 5-week timeframe when the work needed to be done.  VHI was able to perform all work, from initial design and estimate through project completion to meet this tight schedule.  Design ideas and on-the-fly suggestions and adaptations were top notch and,  despite the deadline, VHI accepted additional, unplanned work (the upstairs bathroom floor, the kitchen cabinets, replacing a narrow connecting door to the garage with a 36" steel door, etc.).  Work was performed professionally and beautifully, and pricing of all work was clear and fair.

VHI will certainly be our first choice for future home-improvement work.  Highly recommended!

They came in on time and on budget. The lead carpenter was absolutely fabulous. Since he left we used him to do some other stuff but he treated like it was his house. The work came out beautiful and what we disliked was some of the details where the work in the kitchen cabinets they put screws loose in the back of the door handle so if you are not careful then you will scratch the woodwork. We would highly recommend them. We got quotes from few people and they really worked with us to be in our budget and their price was reasonable for the service they gave. The quality was great except for a very detail stuff which you may not notice but overall when people just walk in they can’t just believe the work that they have done. They really worked with us to design something for us and they took into consideration of how we live. They were on time and it was really amazing. Their professionalism was great.

We have had several projects done by Valley Home Improvement, from a new master bedroom and bath, to roofing, to a new kitchen and dining room, to flood repairs. The owner is creative, smart and involved. The project managers are well informed, efficient, polite, and innovative. The crews do a pretty good job of cleaning up and do excellent quality work. They all take real pride in what they do. Our only quibble is that we don't always get exceptionally prompt service and it is never cheap. Still, we have a beautiful home thanks to Nelson and Valley Home Improvement.
