Ray did a great job! Used JHI for our first home purchase, and went back to them 12 years later for our second home. Great group and so knowledgeable.

Our inspector was great! He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and made me feel like I was doing the inspection myself. He was honest about everything he found and took the time to explain his finding with me.

We used Jackson Home Inspection twice. Each inspection was worth every penny. We had Josh for one inspection and Ray for another. Nothing gets past these guys. They both had construction backgrounds and decades of inspection experience. They explained everything along the way and were great to deal with. We've used inspectors in the past, and there is absolutely no comparison. Jackson blows away every other inspector we've used. Seriously, other inspectors seemed infantile in comparison. As a result of their inspections, we didn't even make an offer on the first house (someone way overpaid for the house, but it wasn't us), and we bid with 100% confidence on the second house. We'll be closing on it soon, and we know exactly what we'll need to update or repair (which isn't much). I can't recommend them highly enough.

We are in the process of buying a house in Everett, MA. Jackson Home Inspection was very quick in responding to e-mails, especially since we were working on a very tight timeframe. Our inspection was with Josh, and he did a great job. He was very thorough and documented everything well. When I had a question about one item, he quickly e-mailed a response back that answered my question. The house we're planning on buying needs some work, but I feel much more confident in the purchase after walking through every single area with the inspector and watching him test all accessible areas. He also gave some practical advice about what is an immediate danger, and what are warning signs that we should monitor.

Very well. Inspector did a thorough evaluation of all house systems: electrical, plumbing, heating, a/c. He was forthright about what he could see, answered our questions readily, and pointed out details that we would have overlooked, all with a professional, helpful attitude. Would highly recommend for anyone buying a home.

Gil and his son were professional, they took the time to help out.. even when unexpected time sinks came up. They were thorough and caught problems that multiple inspectors had missed in previous sales of this home. And, to top it all off, their prices were a bit lower than the average for these services. I highly recommend this company.

I had no idea where to start in selecting a home inspector, so I turned to Angie's List. I chose Jackson Home Inspection, Inc based on the company's excellent reviews, and couldn't be more pleased! I had a million questions, as any novice home buyer, and Teresa (Office Staff) was so kind and patient in promptly responding to my multiple emails. We scheduled a home inspection within ~a week (confounded by the holidays and my work schedule), and Josh (Home Inspector) met me and the realtors at the property (he was even early!). He was very knowledgeable, patient, and understanding of my relative lack-of knowledge in the home inspection process, and took me through the house with him, explaining virtually everything that he was looking at as he went. I received the complete Home Inspection report via email within 24 hours. I would recommend Jackson Home Inspection, Inc to family, friends and strangers alike. Thank you!

Josh was an excellent, thorough inspector. He took time to look at everything, explained what he was seeing as he went, answered all of our questions, and even commented on what he would do to repair certain problems.this was the best inspection, and the most pleasant, I've ever gone through.

Inspector was on time. I accompanied the inspector throughout his rounds. He was helpful and informative in his explanations of what he was doing and what he noted and recorded. His report was comprehensive and thorough and very helpful in developing priorities of what needs to be attended to. I would definitely employ him again, should the need arise.

Initially, the inspection seemed to go well.  Glen Grutta was sent out by the company, and was professional and well-informed.  Later, however, a major problem appeared which was missed by Mr. Grutta and not addressed by Ray Jackson, owner of the company.  Furthermore, evidence of this issue was mentioned (and misdiagnosed) specifically in Grutta's report, though his firm failed to take responsibility for it later on.

To begin, in November, 2014, Jackson Home Inspection came out to inspect a property in Arlington which we later bought.  When we had lived the property for less than 6 weeks, major ice dams appeared, but thanks to the newly installed roof, we had no leaks, save for by the chimney.  Once the ice melted and we were able to have someone look at the chimney, it immediately became clear that Mr. Grutta had missed a substantial lean in the chimney, a problem which needed to be remedied immediately lest the entire chimney fall, and would cost us $7,000 - $13,000 to repair.

Surprised that such an obvious problem had been missed, we went back over the inspection with two contractors and a structural engineer, and all all found that what Mr. Grutta thought was badly applied caulking was, in reality, clear evidence of this lean (see attached pictures).  Additionally, further inspection of the chimney revealed yet more evidence of problems, namely telltale cracks in the foundation.

With this information in hand, we contacted Ray Jackson looking for some compensation for having missed this issue.  In response to our letter, Mr. Jackson sent back a letter filled with typos which failed to grasp the thrust of our concerns, and instead tried to deflect responsibility onto, for example, the first floor unit owner (with whom, by law we were unable to communicate prior to purchase), the Division of Professional Licensure (who informed us of our rights to issue a formal complaint), and the fireplace repairman (who was hired precisely because Mr. Jackson's liability extends only to external, structural issues, as opposed to those related to the firebox and other elements of the chimney).

Ultimately, it boils down to what can be seen in the attached pictures: the chimney is obviously leaning.

  1. The caulking running up the inside corner between the chimney and the shingles has clearly been applied in an attempt to close a gap resulting from the chimney?s increasing lean.
  2. There is a substantial gap between the shingles and the caulking indicating that the chimney continued to move after the caulking was applied.
  3. The cracks in the foundation beneath the shingles also indicate the lean.

These issues were noted, but misinterpreted, in Mr. Grutta's report.  For example, in multiple places, Grutta mentions "Questionable Asphalt Sealer Installation" on the chimney.  This "asphalt sealer" was not, in fact, poorly installed, but was instead evidence of a much bigger structural issue.  Jackson Home Inspection has been rude and uncooperative, leaving us with little recourse but to file here on Angie's List and hope that no one else suffers from the same negligence.
Response from Jackson Home Inspection Inc
"In response to your numerous accusations regarding our company. Your report, in numerous locations, states and clearly flags issues with the chimney. Five separate potentially hazardous issues with the Heating System including flue pipe, improper installation of the flue pipe for the water heater, 4 separate warnings regarding C/O hazards are in the report! All of these are related to the chimney. At the beginning of the report in red print there are several warnings i.e. “Summary of Areas Requiring Further Evaluation” “Here is a list of major defects that need further evaluation or repair by appropriately Licensed Contractors NOW! (In red print). “It is strongly recommended that you have appropriate licensed contractors evaluate each concern further and the entire system or additional concerns that may be outside our area of expertise or the scope of our inspection BEFORE the close of escrow. Please call our office for any clarifications or further questions.” 1. Concrete Cap Missing. 2. Chimney appears to be too short (correct height is required for proper drafting of appliances) 3. Flashing; Questionable Asphalt Sealer Installation. 4. C/O hazards with the heating system and the hot water heater. The information and warnings regarding the chimney could not be any clearer, there are warnings all over the report on numerous pages. In your complaint you also said that “buy law you were unable to have any communications with the other condo owner(s) in the building”. I don’t know who told you that nonsense, but nothing could be further from the truth or fact. You absolutely want to meet and talk with the other owner(s). How else would you know the budget, capital expenses, repairs, present history of any issues including the chimney? There are no laws regarding who you can and cannot talk to including the seller, trustees, other owners, neighbors or the mail man for that matter. It’s a free country you can talk to anyone that you think could better inform you! The report warns you to talk with the other owner(s) regarding the chimney, untreated fence, over grown trees, missing hand railing, unsafe steps, weathered siding, rotted exterior trim, peeling paint, substandard workmanship, rodents, unsafe steps to the basement, potential for lack of electrical power to the building and the overall poor condition of the common garage. The report has about 14 warnings for you to ‘Consult ‘Condo Association”. There is a complete page in the report urging you to speak with the association prior to moving forward with your purchase so you know exactly what you are getting into. It is apparent that you did not read your report, act on any of our important and valuable advice we supplied you in the report and you took poor advice from some other party. Over all you did not do your due diligence. Ray Jackson, President"

Ray (the owner of the company) did a fantastic job inspecting a house that we purchased. He was thorough, clearly knew his stuff, and explained things in a way that made sense to use. He wrote up a report quickly within 24 hours and was also available to chat on the phone afterward to further discuss his findings. The house has alot of work to be completed, so he also helped us prioritize what he thought we should complete in what order (i.e. he clearly laid out which were safety concerns). We really appreciated his feedback.

The inspector Steve Reid was very easy to work with, courteous and super responsive to follow up questions we had even after the home inspection was completed and we were obtaining clarifications from the sellers.  He pointed out some very good things (loose bathtub, concerns with heat efficiency etc) that we were able to get the seller to correct.
Even after the inspection, we were able to call/email with some of the sellers responses to confirm accuracy and Steve was very professional and responsive through it all.
The only thing I would have hoped for was a better price.  Alternative quotes for the same work were $650 (almost $300 lower) but those service providers were not available within the short time window we needed.  The cost also excluded lead testing (which ended up being a non-issue due to the new construction for us but prospective customers would be wise ask about this)
55All in all - happy with the service and no regrets but wish price had been more reasonable.

As the sellers of this property, I must say that we were shocked with the results when the perspective buyer, reviewed the inspection report with us. First, both my wife and I are retired and were present fro the entire inspection. Unfortunately, the buyer was unable to be present. Both of us had indicated to the inspector a Stephen Reid from Jackson Home Inspection, to feel free to ask any questions if need be. He asked the question "why weren't the stoves in both the apartment and finished family room working"? the answer was easy, there isn't anyone living in either unit, so the power was shut off to save electricity however, he failed to remove this negative from his inspection causing the buyer concern. He indicated that all steel piping be replaced.  All steel piping in a 2300 sq.ft. house built in 1956? Screw missing on panel cover? Really? (2) year old electric stove and refrigerator were fully depreciated in apartment kitchen, which had been recently updated. Several cracks in driveway? The drive was resurfaced 5 years ago, and was sealed two years ago are there cracks yes there are cracks but not worth mentioning. I could go on and on but as the seller, if you know that a perspective buyer is using this inspection company do your best to obtain a copy it would be to your advantage as the seller in order to prepare yourself.
Response from Jackson Home Inspection Inc
"This response is from the perspective of the seller not the buyer. What a seller might feel is nit picking is what we at Jackson Home inspection call thorough. Our obligation is to our client the buyer not the seller."

Inspector (Glen) was very thorough and knowledgeable. Not only did he inspect the home, he took the time to explain the things that he found, and provided advice as to what to expect in the future. He pointed out details that we had not noticed, including things that the builder did that were above and beyond what the code called for. He explained recent changes in the code as well.

Inspector performed a home inspection that directly conflicted with opinions of local building inspectors who signed off on permits for work performed.  In addition to being wrong about several items that scared a potential homeowner away, inspector does not even include pictures in his reports to substantiate his claims as proof.  Very unprofessional, and in our experience, is not a good inspector.  We were disappointed in this inspector's performance as it negatively impacted us severely as the sellers when most of the information was literally incorrect.

Steve showed up at our scheduled time, if I am not mistaken he was at the home that needed inspecting before I was and I was there 5 minutes early.
He went through the house inside and out with a fine took comb. He pointed out everything that needed fixing and was very professional and knowledgeable with all aspects of the inspection and I felt very satisfied with the inspection.
