I would like to start off by saying that Jeff, from JC Construction is a nice guy, he really is. I?m thinking that our basement and
hallway renovation was just above and beyond what he is capable of managing. I have decided to list the issues we had to shorten this review.
-Original time frame on quote was 3-4 weeks. It took 18 weeks total which is when we decided to part ways with Jeff and have another company finish the project. We lost faith in his ability and desire to finish the job in a quality manner. Jeff had informed us that he only had a few things left to finish and he would be done in a day. After doing a walk through, I found the following items still needed to be finished:
Hallway:
1. Nail holes filled and final paint on both sides of kitchen door. Paint all wood associated with kitchen door.
2. Strike plate put on garage door as its marking trim.
3. Fill holes and paint all wood on garage entry door
4. Complete trim near stairs, raw, unpainted edge
5. Install new window and complete with finished trim.
6. Remove remaining stickers on balusters
7. 2nd coat of paint on railing going down stairs
Basement:
1. Complete floor
2. Complete sliding door with interior trim and complete exterior door with the same material as front windows
3. Fix mini bar as the fridge is not the same height as cabinets. Fridge is too high and the counter top will not be able to fit appropriately
4. Paint all interior doors in both sides (2 coats as standard)
5. Fill all nail holes in trim around doors and baseboard trim and paint.
6. Second coat of paint on supports
7. Second coat of blue in basement as you can see white in many spots
8. Trim the bottom of the bathroom door and closet door so that they can open and close over the rug.
As you can see from this list, the project was far from being completed and he had told us he was just about done and only had 1 or 2 more things to complete.
Plumbing Issues:
His original plumber backed out, after both Jeff and I spent 3 weeks looking for a new one, I found one that was going to ackhammer floor instead of installing an upflush system for toilet/sink in basement. All of a sudden Jeff found a plumber 2 hours later willing to do upflush system which is what Jeff believe we should do which turned out to be against code. We ended up using a plumber I found who did a great job and was quick (review on angies list, Pat Liberty). I believe Jeff was just stalling and ?wasn?t able to find? a plumber so that he could stall and work on other jobs.
Misc Issues
- There were numerous days no one showed at the house to work with no explanation.
- Never more than 2 workers (him and one other person)- 90% of time 1 worker only. We were under the impression we hired a
company to do this project which is why we believed the original time frame of 3-4 weeks.
-In our hallway leading to basement, he was supposed to remove sheetrock, insulate outside wall in hallway however he only did blow in insulation.
- Jeff had poor communication skills and doesn?t properly explain things from the homeowners perspective that causes confusion down the line.
- Supposed to be without laundry for 2-3 days, 3 weeks total (this was a week and half waiting for him to do his part, then informing me plumber needed to come back and fix something)
-Left stickers on railings in new hallway
-Can still see wood grain on painted white handrail going down stairs
- Did not replace or at least repaint toe kick under replaced new kitchen door in hallway which shows such poor quality of work and trying to take short cuts.
If you hire JC Construction I suggest you make sure you follow up on quote and ask for details for exact work to be performed. Also, get a quote for supply estimate. Lastly, negotiated terms of payment- do not give 33% upfront (max allowed by law) try to
negotiate smaller frequent payments to give him incentive to work. Again, Jeff is a nice guy, and I?m sure he would be fine for smaller projects, not total basement renovations and jobs that require organizing other service providers.
