The details:
The original quote was for $400 more using a different device. My own research led me to a device I thought was better. They looked into and it fit the job. The device I suggested turned out to be better regarded and less expensive. Callahan reduce the quote to pass that savings on to me.
They had a team of two guys that did the bulk of the installation. The team worked with me to find a location for the device and ventilation ducting. They balanced my needs, minimize disruption to basement and quiet operation, and ensuring that the installation was up to code and properly installed to be effective at ventilating the office room.
I was very impressed with their attention to detail. The cuts in the wall and ceiling of my office were perfect. No extra damage to ceiling tiles or drywall were present. The duct work to the outside is very well insulated and the fit and finish is top notch.
I now have fresh air in my basement office and it is wonderfully quiet.
Finding a service with my level of OCD is a rare thing. I will definitely use Callahan for all my HVAC needs in the future.
"[member name removed] I want to first apologize for the customer service you received, we as a company work very hard to provide great customer service both from our office staff and our field technicians. We currently have four people answering phones who have each been with the company for many years and could answer any question you may have. Unfortunately we had hired a new office assistant in February and she must have taken your call. We realized very quickly that she was not really able to help us and is no longer working for us. Again, I apologize for your bad experience and hope you will give us another shot to make a good impression. Carol"
I greeted the technician at the door with all my information about what I “knew” the issue to be and while I chattered away, he literally “felt” his way around the pipes. “That has nothing to do with it-here’s yer trouble right here” (pointing to a corroded
valve that was clogged on the inside, preventing the water from getting where it needed to go.) Had I persisted one step more on the other (“cheaper”) path, it would have cost me over $10,000. He worked VERY diligently for four hours (I stayed out of his hair!) and at one point stopped to get me and warn me that he had to remove a pipe that was corroded enough to possibly break and if that happened it was the worst-case scenario. I braced myself and said “Okay-what am I praying for?” and Phil said “You’re praying this pipe here doesn’t break” and thankfully we BOTH said hallelujah! In the end it cost me $700 which is a WHOLE
LOT BETTER than $10,000. The moral of the story is, next time, call the expert first and just let him do his thing because this is NOT HIS FIRST RODEO!
Well, he ended up charging me $120 in labor, he charged me for a full 1hr of labor when he was here maybe 1/2 hr and DID NOT do any labor, just came out and told me that this pipe was disconnected. When I prompted him on how much it would cost to reconnect he danced around the issue and would not give me a quote, just kept saying it was easy but that he couldn't be sure how long it would take and he didn't want to give me an inaccurate quote...okay, then why was I being charged $120?? To come and tell me something you should have figured out the first time you came and did work??
My husband called to discuss the matter and we found that Mr. Callahan's customer service was just as lacking as the work his employee had done in our house. He seemed to think it was fine that we were charged for labor when no labor had taken place. When pressed about the fact that his employee had not properly tested his work to make sure that it did in fact work, he didn't seem to comprehend that this should have been done. I wished we had walked away then, but because this is our baby's nursery, my husband just wanted the work done so we had John come back the next day and for another $230 ($10 materials $220 labor!) the radiator is finally working (Oh PS, the did not refund the $120 we were charged for John and quot;showing upand quot;).
This all was very disheartening because we thought we had finally found a company that we could work with. We have radiators in every room and every one of them needs to be moved/fixed, but we will never use Callahan AC and Heating again. John is very nice, but we feel this company lacks professionalism , is extremely overpriced, and they do not value their customers.
