"Thank you for your feedback! I have passed this along to everyone involved."
"Mr. [Member Name Removed] thank you for your review and your feedback we greatly appreciate it. We charge an industry standard service and travel fee of $155.00 for travel and diagnostics for all of our service calls. After determining your equipment had a failed ignition component we replaced it. We use flat rate pricing and do not typically break apart our labor and materials, we find this is more straightforward when we make repairs. In addition, your boiler was not firing safely and the combustion readings were quite off. We spent time adjusting the gas pressure and oxygen mixture to ensure your boiler was safely operating within it's parameters. We also checked your living space for carbon monoxide as we always do to ensure the safety of our clients. Please note we did not charge for the combustion adjustments or readings as a courtesy. We understand your concerns with the billing amount, but we feel it is well within industry standards for our qualified and trained technicians. We hope you would consider using us in the future."

What I had done: I've got an electric car coming in a few months, and I wanted the charge port installed during the summer months. We had some back and forth by email about exactly how to install this circuit. There were some complications because our standby generator, intended to power the whole house, isn't rated for the whole house plus the new car. There's another big positive here, though
First, Keyes did the leg work to figure out whether generator overload would be a problem or not (unprompted). Second, they proposed an initial solution (disable the car charger circuit any time the generator is running) but also did the leg work to figure out whether our generator installer could do something better (disable the car charger circuit only when the generator is overloaded). They could have made more money here on an inferior solution. Instead they recommended that I have the generator company install the better solution after Keyes finished their work. Bravo for that.
Unfortunately, this took more visits (5) than either I expected or the estimator expected. On day 1, they pulled the data lines (incorrectly) and fished the high voltage line under the breezeway. One day 2, they ran the inside wiring to the breaker box and wired it up. On day 3, the did the in-garage PVC work. Each of these were full days. A partial day 4 was spent fixing the data terminations, and day 5 was the inspector. It wouldn't be a problem that it took 5 visits, except I felt I need to be there to supervise the work, so I worked from home on 4 of those 5 days. I would have been fine with 2 work from home days.
Part of the problem here was an estimating problem, but the bulk of it was a logistical/supplier problem. Day one had a problem with the conductor they brought out (the jacket was cut). On the bright side, they didn't just install dangerous product. But getting replacement conductor slowed them down.
Instead they ran the data lines that day. But none of the 4 circuits were properly terminated, which meant a later followup day. When they finally fixed up the data lines, they used my test equipment to verify the lines, because theirs was 75% broken (with 4 terminating test pieces, 3 of the 4 were known by the technician not to work). The test equipment in question costs $120. They use pretty much the same tool I do, it's just that they have to run back and forth for every line they check.
Another stall happened when it was time to install PVC conduit in the garage. The corner pieces were just never ordered for the job. It took the better part of 45 minutes just to figure this out. Ground to a halt by pieces that cost, what, around a dollar? This time they sent a runner for the part, but it held up the work for a few hours.
These mis-steps on the logistic and execution side made the job take longer, but the job was eventually completed as requested and expected. I'm happy with the end result.
I am very happy knowing that if/when a problem does arise, Keyes North Atlantic will fix it. I enthusiastically recommend this company.
Keyes North Atlantic absolutely sets the standard for a homeowner and contractor relationship. I call their office with a problem, they set a reasonable date for an appointment, and then upon arrival they spend a reasonable amount of time assessing the issue. If the potential cost threshold to resolve the issue might be a concern, they communicate a fair and accurate estimate. Otherwise they fix the issue and bill you a reasonable rate and don't take advantage of any homeowner naiveté regarding any work that needs to be done.
I appreciate their diligence in this regard and believe they will continue to do such good work in the future upon my need for their services.
