Living in Waltham and serving on my church's property committee, I've worked with several electricians over the years and liked them all, but John was a standout. He met with me to review the electrical work for the project, asked good questions, reviewed the electrical plans and made suggestions to improve them. He also told me about potential problems before they arose (for example, I wanted recessed cans installed in a certain location, but there were structural joists above the ceiling right in the location I wanted. He found an attractive and functional alternate location and everyone is quite pleased with his solution.) John is a licensed master electrician so he knew what was needed to bring the outdated wiring in a 40+ year-old kitchen up to code, and I know my contractor would not have used him if his rates weren't very competitive. Sometimes it's the little details that make someone's work stand out. In John's case, he asked questions about where furniture and bookcases would be placed so that when he added the switch for the new living room can lights, it would be in the best location and not blocked by bookcases (we had removed all the furniture for floor refinishing so he had no way of knowing without asking). In addition, code required that we put an outlet at the end of the island, but we wanted something as small and unobtrusive as possible. John installed a Sillite outlet, which is probably one of the smallest outlets you could find, its paintable, doesn't protrude at all, and we were able to fit it seamlessly with the woodwork at the end of the island. It was a great little detail. John always showed up on schedule, even at one point in the project when other work was delayed, he ended up coming in on the weekend (through no fault of his own) to keep the project on schedule. He was also very kind, for example when I was moving a sofa out of the work area for the floor refinishers, even though it had nothing to do with his work and I had another helper to move it, he stopped his work, came down from his ladder, and insisted on taking my end of the sofa, which was great, because that thing was heavy! He also complimented me on the style and quality of the island pendant lighting we had chosen which just made my day. In all of the details, he was pleasant, trustworthy, and professional to work with and because of this I will definitely use him again. _______________ Note: the cost of service given above for the kitchen electrical work was approximated because John performed the electrical work as a subcontractor for Cromer Remodeling. I estimated the cost based on his quote to install 6 can lights in a living room ceiling where there had previously been no lighting at all: $600. Considering the time involved to install these lights, and especially the care he took with placement of the fixtures and making sure the edges looked neat, I think his rate was reasonable.
Description of Work: All wiring and lighting for full kitchen remodel, added subpanel, additional work ($600) to add lighting to living room. Work included recessed can lights, pendant lights, special wiring for undercabinet lights, outdoor flood light, power for dishwasher, disposal, charging station in island, undercounter microwave, moving doorbell and thermostat, bringing all electrical up to new code and passing inspection.
