Trefler's
About us
Trefler's has been owned and operated by the Trefler family since 1921. It all began in Germany, when Abraham Trefler began a small business for himself building and restoring furniture. Abraham’s son, Eric, was one of the few survivors of the camps in Poland and Germany during WWII. Upon his liberation, he left Europe for New York, and finally settled in Boston, MA. After spending some time working as a furniture restorer for the antique dealers on Beacon Street, he opened his own business. Using the expertise he learned from his father back in Germany, he quickly became renowned for his uncanny ability to restore almost any kind of art object. Today, Trefler’s is still owned and operated by the Trefler family. We expertly mix century-old techniques with modern restoration technology to create some of the best repairs in the world. No project is too big or too small for us to work our magic. Come take a tour of the studio and see what we can do to preserve your family’s heritage.

When Trefler's finally had the precious antiques that survived the fire, it was supposed to take 10 weeks to completion. Well, they were given the goods back in May and we just received the furniture, clock, Sumpter telephone and shaving mirror back today, October 1st. Also, they were not ready to hand off the goods to the moving company, so I was charged extra time by the moving company.
Additionally, one of the pieces of furniture they took to restore is an ebony buffet designed by Phillip Johnson with a white cork top. I told them I wanted to keep the original color. They sent it back with a FAR darker stain AND there are DEEP marks where the top has been sanded unevenly.
I could not be more disappointed. Treflers has shown no interest in remedying the situation. I would recommend going anywhere else.
"Hello La[member name removed] I’m sorry to read that you had a bad experience working with Trefler’s. It appears as though there was an unexpected obstacle in removing the smell of smoke from the small hanging wall box. Although it had appeared to have received minor exposure to the fire, it required over 6 treatments of ozone, which significantly delayed the project. I apologize that we were not able to complete this project within your expected time frame. As for the ebony buffet, it is not that we have no interest in remedying the situation, it is that this is the first time we realized that you are not satisfied with the way the cork top was completed. I know that we did not sand the top, we only applied a clear coat of shellac, so I am surprised to read your comment about the uneven texture. Please feel free to call any of us at Trefler’s so that we may start a dialogue to remedy this situation for you. Regards, Leslie Burnard Director of Marketing & Sales"
I had a very hard time contacting them to know when to expect the estimate for the candelabra. I'd speak to a person who would take a message and then I'd never get a return call. This happened several times. Finally I explained my problem to the receptionist and finally got to talk to the person who knew something. All in all it took several weeks to get an estimate. In the case of the crystal decanter, I had to call them to get an ETA (one month away). They never called to tell me it was done.
