 + -1 moreWe went through several design interations before we settled on a final plan for the addition. Our project was complicated because we were constrained with several small spaces that could not be expanded. We wanted our new addition to include many additional amenities beyond what we had. Existing kitchen space was about 12 x 12. The existing 2 bathrooms and master closet space in total was also about 12 x 12. In the kitchen Marc was able to design the space to fit in a large island with storage and seating, a 2nd built in oven, a built in microwave and tons of storage. In one bathroom we were able to add in a jacuzzi bathtub and more storage. In the master bathroom we were able to add a large 2 person steam shower with seating. We wanted as much storage space as possible in our master bedroom closet and Marc was able to double the space. It was very important to my husband and me that the new addition be designed to look like it had been a part of the house all along. Marc's design was able to achieve that. Marc did an excellent job. He drew very detailed plans listing out all the materials to be used. He also took me shopping one day toseveral companies to pick out the windows we wanted to use. . Marc stopped over several times during the building of the project to check out the builds work. He caught a couple of errors that neither my husband nor I would have been able to identify. For example, one of the main support beams in the addition was not the size specified (was too small) and needed to be corrected. In the upstairs addition room the builder started to remove some of the architectural jogs but Marc caught the error before all the building was done. In summary we were very glad that we used an architect who was separate from our builder. If we didn't do that we would not have ended up all the features that we finally were able to get.
Description of Work: Added an addition to a 1980 split level. This included adding a new great room off the kitchen and re-designing the kitchen for maximum storage (upper level of the house). Also we had MSH architects redesign and reconfigure two bathrooms and a bedroom closet also located on the upper level. The lower level of the house was modified to add an additional family room below the new upper level great room. The addition is in the back of our house. The addition involved adding rooms and walls that were not just 'rectangle' in shape but had some jogs designed along the outside walls. Not only is the design very interesting inside but from the outside the addition looks great. Too bad the addition is in the back of the house instead of the front! The design of the new great room was different and more innovative than other architects had proposed. We still receive 'wow's and rave reviews when people see our great room for the first time. In 2010 we were contact by HGTV's "Bang for Your Buck" because they saw a photo of our great room on MSH Architects website and they wanted us to be on their show. (The timing didn't work out for us to participate). Additionally the photographer MSH Architect used to take pictures of our addition asked us if he could add the pictures he took to his own website.
