Description of Work: Dave is great - professional and knowledgeable. He's not the cheapest, but he's organized, thorough, detail-oriented, and trustworthy. We had him renovate 2 bathrooms, open up a modest portion of a wall, redo basement carpeting and windows and window wells... We found asbestos in the basement, and he was quick to arrange for that to be taken care of.... All in all, a great experience!

Super. See above.
Description of Work: Major renovation in a Victorian house. Gutted a billiard room and attic above, and created a very large, totally new office with a cathedral ceiling. The room could serve as a bedroom suite. Renovated/installed 3 closets on the floor, renovated another room including hiding duct work behind existing walls, installed large walk-in master bedroom closet on the floor below, and removed a 1950s staircase between the two floors. Used and supervised multiple sub-contractors (electrical, audio/video, HVAC, flooring, roofers, cabinet makers, plasterers, painters, & lighting designers). Created suberb architectual design for the project. Adhered to schedule. Extremely professional. The quality of work of some sub-contractors were not up to the level of others, but all were good or better. Were very cost conscious, but did not skimp on the quality. Result was suberb. Price was fair.

A pleasure to work with from beginning to end. This was our third renovation and the first time we had an A+ experience. Deadlines were met at every stage, Dave Fontenot was on site regularly and always available/responsive to discuss/rethink/respond to any question no matter how trivial. He has a unique billing process: very detailed, completely transparent. We always knew exactly where we were cost-wise and what we were paying for what. He also has terrific taste, good ideas, is very collaborative, and has an ace team of carpenters/foremen/painters etc who were a pleasure to have around. They protected areas of the house that were not involved in the renovation, cleaned thoroughly before leaving every day, and were on time every day. Cannot recommend highly enough.
Description of Work: Major house renovation - kitchen, 4 bathrooms, staircase removal, restructuring of layout, painting, floors, finishes.

We were looking for a contractor to do a 3rd floor shed dormer, including a new bathroom and reroofing the entire house. Dave was extremely responsive and professional. Provided a comprehensive estimate with a complete breakdown of costs, which was very helpful in guaging the scope of the project and giving us the opportunity to scale up or back on things and understand the impact financially. Dave worked with us to try and get the project closer to our budget, however, although his estimate was, we're more than sure, in the right ballpark for the level of craftmanship and professionalism, we were pressed to go for the lower bid. Had we gone with Dave, and we told him this, we would have been confident enough to hand him our keys go away and come back at the end of the job expecting the job to be done to perfection. We're now going to cross our fingers and hope our compromise hasn't made us penny wise and pound foolish.
Description of Work: Dave came out in December when we had our first conceptual drawings to give us a preliminary ballpark estimate. We followed up with Dave once we had our final plans in place to give us an actual bid on the project in February/March. Overall we had 6 contractors look at the project and got 3 final bids, of which Dave's was in the middle. It should be noted however, that 3 of the contractors were dropped out of the running and that based on the preliminary early estimates we received Dave's bid would probably fallen on the higher side should we have received all 6 as formal bids.

Everything went quickly and smoothly. I called and received an estimate the following few days. David came and we looked at the old patio and he measured and noticed potential drainage issue which we've confirmed in the past had led to some basement leaks. After measuring the area and scoping out the area, he gave us an estimate which was higher than we had expected, however the work was also more than expected and we wanted to make sure the drainage was addressed before the deck was added. After we accepted the quote, the crew came a few days later and were finished with the job in about two days. I found two issues after the initial work, one was that the deck was touching the house and I was concerned about water pooling against the house leading to rot. The second concern was that one of the edges of the deck was not quite horizontal. I told David about the two issues and the crew returned a day or two later and addressed them both very well. I was very satisfied with their work and would use them again. They cleaned up well and were courteous when we were working with them. The company was very responsive to phone calls and were always timely with their work.
Description of Work: Built new small deck deck (16' x 12') very close to ground to replace a patio. Also provided better drainage to the area.

We are utterly thrilled with the results. This is the second time we have use Fontenot Contracting and we could not be happier. (We also used him in 2005 for a Kitchen and bathroom remodel at our old place) We bought our new house at the very end of May. Dave and his crew completed all the work in June / July so the house was available for us to move in at beginning of August. The project basically involved remodeling the house such that there was a new kitchen (where there had not previously been a kitchen), adding a deck, and adding some new doors both exterior and closet doors and also upgrading the electrical service. The place is transformed. It's hard to believe its the same house. Everything went incredibly smoothly. There is not a single aspect that we are unhappy with. Everything is perfect. The attention to detail is exceptional. We have not yet had a ***single*** instance of where we have looked at something and thought "I wish that did X" - they just got everything "right". The 2 things that stands out the most is the rare combination of exceptional attention to detail, both in terms of fit and finish (everything looks perfect), and how well Dave plans things and executes everything. For example, we added new exterior doors to the kitchen and garage (one of which was a last minute add-on to the project). This involved re-working the exterior siding of the house. It's when you examine the secondary things, like where they had to re-work the siding, things that we hadn't really thought about, and you see just how perfect their attention to detail is. Yet they achieve this attention to detail, while also doing an excellent job of managing logistics to ensure everything is done quickly efficiently. From start to finish they made great progress, yet at no time did they appear to be rushing. They also kept his eye on things, like a hawk - there were a few things that came up over the course of the project, including issues with the granite and floors - but Dave leaped into action and ensured everything was taken care of.
Description of Work: Converted what had originally been a screened in porch into a kitchen, adding completely new plumbing and electrical which included upgrading the electrical service. Built a new deck (where there had not previously been a deck) and created new exterior doors (where there had not previously been doorsways) connecting the kitchen and garage with the deck. Also complete re-framed the closet doors in 2 bedrooms replacing a narrow single door with double doors, allowing full access to the closets. Also re-framed the sub-floor beneath the new kitchen for structural reasons, since the space originally been intended as a porch.

We had success with a smaller remodel with this company so we engaged them to do this large remodel for us. Fontenot Contracting also won an award given by the Newton Historical Society for a remodel they had done on a Victorian. We saw that home and liked what was done to it. The additions look original to the home because of the design skill of this company. The bid we received when we started this job was extensive and thorough and it made it easy for us to have an accurate idea of the financial scope of this project. We have remolded a number of homes and had never received a bid that was so comprehensive. It allowed us to decide just how far we could go with our ideas for the home. The work was done in a timely manner by a crew of considerate, skilled workers. Any questions or concerns we had were immediately addressed and resolved to our satisfaction. The tile work and the paint finishes are of the top grade. Dave was very helpful when we were trying to decide which products to use and which colors would work best. He has finished many projects involving Victorian homes and he has a good eye for the details they involve. He was available to us at all hours and met us at the house daily to review the progress and answer questions we might have. We would definitely use his company again and recommend it without hesitation to anyone else.
Description of Work: Fontenot Contracting remodeled our 100 year old Victorian home. They installed new plumbing, electrical, heat and air, siding, 4 1/2 new baths, new kitchen, a family room and a new deck. To create the new kitchen and family room they added an adddition to the house and they designed and built a new attached garage. An old back door porch was transformed into a wine storage room with new cabinets for glasses, etc. The inside of the house was repainted and the floors were refinished. New molding was added to the kitchen and family room so that those rooms are consistent with the rest of the house. They also remodeled the basement and made it into a very nice living area. Dave was a huge help when he discovered problems with the structure inside the walls. He has an engineering backround and he knew immediately what sort of remedial things we needed to do to solve the problems. He added beams to level the floors and to open spaces for better living areas. Since this work was unexpected and added to the amount of work that was necessary Dave met with us and explained exactly what the added cost would be. He gave us another detailed accounting and made the decision to do this work an easy one to make. We felt that he had saved us from making a huge mistake. If these hidden problems had been ignored or not pointed out to us the whole basis for the remodel would have been compromised.

When we bought the house, there was an old cask style hot tub built into our deck. We did not use the hot tub and it took up about 1/3 of the deck. We wanted to remove the hot tub to reclaim our deck, as well as see if we could have an enclosed storage space constructed under the deck. We called several contractors from the Decks and Porches category on Angie s list, and Dave was one of the most responsive. He returned our call right away, was able to make the appointment, and showed up on time. Dave looked at the job and made some valuable suggestions regarding possible problems with our plan. The next day, Dave sent over a detailed proposal that listed all of the costs item by item. All of the other contractors we met with only quoted us a price (with no additional information) after we had called them back 2 weeks later. Once we agreed on what work needed to be done, Dave s team was able to start working within a week. Most of the cost was in building the unconventional under-the-deck shed, which included demolition, excavation, laying a concrete slab, building a small retaining wall and enclosing the shed. Dave was very patient and worked with us, even though we changed our minds several times. For instance, we initially wanted to install a privacy fence along the new railing, where the hot tub had been. In the end, we decided we wanted to change from a privacy fence along the new side to a trellis. We found a picture of what we wanted, and Dave s team built a trellis that resembled our picture very well. During the course of the project, he also recommended ideas to us to try and keep costs down. He also thought of details that we had not originally considered, such as installing a ramp to the shed, so that we could easily move the lawn mower in and out. We are very pleased with the work Dave and his team did on our deck and shed. We highly recommended him and plan to use him again for any remodeling.
Description of Work: Dave s team removed a cask style hot tub built into our deck. They then squared off the deck, replaced the planking, re-spaced the balusters to code, and built a trellis. In addition, they built an enclosed storage space under the deck.

I met with Dave to go over the design and pricing options (materials). Dave is extremely thorough. He listened to what I wanted and came back with a great design and a price that beat other estimates. His crew, lead by Matt Hudson, were exceptional. On top of doing a top notch of constructing the deck, they showed up each day on time and were extremely professional. I couldn't have been more pleased with the quality of the work and the professionalism they showed.
Description of Work: Fontenot Contracting designed and built a new deck for the back of my house. The deck was designed by Dave Fontenot (owner). The deck was built by a crew of three, lead by Matt Hudson (Project Manager). The deck is constructed of Trex deck materials.

David Fontenot was easy to work with and was very understanding of our needs, desires and budget limitations. His team were all very knowledgeable and helpful whenever I had questions. We went through over 10 iterations of design work, all at a fixed cost for design. We never felt rushed through the process and David Fontenot brought interesting and extremely good ideas to the design at all stages. After demolition was complete, Dave Fontenot inspected the building and found that additional supports were needed in the basement and the attic because previous owners had made improper alterations. At this time, David Fontenot took the opportunity to recommend a vaulted ceiling in our dining room, since we needed to do repair work there. It is now one of our favorite aspects of our condo. This is just one example of the fantastic ideas that Fontenot Contracting brought to the table. We are so happy with the entire project.
Description of Work: Fontenot Contracting handled my complete remodel from start to finish. They started with over two months of design work to come up with a plan that we were happy with and that was within our budget. The project included gutting our existing 2br, 1bath condominium, adding an addition on the back, replacing the roof, siding, and all insulation, and a complete renovation of the inside. New red Oak hardwood floors, all new trim, windows, and doors. The kitchen has granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances. The bathroom has intricate tile work, and built-in shelves for storage. All work was done flawlessly and on-time (even with unexpected structural issues with the existing building requiring additional work).
